Sneijder resists Real Madrid exit

MADRID, Aug. 13 -- Real Madrid midfielder Wesley Sneijder repeated on Thursday his desire to remain at his current club.

Real are looking to sell Sneijder and their other Dutch internationals Arjen Robben and Rafael Van der Vaart in an attempt to recoup some of the 255 million euros the club has spent this summer signing players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema and Xabi Alonso.

Inter Milan and Aston Villa are rumored to be interested in Sneijder, with Aston Villa coach Martin O'Neill speaking openly of his admiration for the 25-year-old.

However, speaking to Sky Sports, Sneijder said he does not want to leave.

"I am going to fight to play for Real Madrid despite all of the competition for places," said Sneijder.

"I don't want to leave the club. I know that the transfer market will be open for two more weeks, but for the moment, I am not thinking about that at all," he said.

China opens world volleyball Grand Prix HK leg with victory

HONG KONG, Aug. 14 -- China defeated the Dominican Republic 3-1 in their opening game of the world volleyball Grand Prix Hong Kong leg here on Friday.

The Dominican team seemed full of confidence at the opening set, but China improved and overtook the rivals to gain the set 25-21.

The Dominican Republic soon geared up in the second set and took the set 25-21, thanks to the good performance of Captain Camil Dominguez Martinez and Altagracia Mambru.

Both teams did their best to take the lead, but supported by a noisy Hong Kong crowd, the Chinese team finally handed the pressure over to their inexperienced rivals and won the following sets with 25-17 and 25-20.

With the victory, China has already booked a berth for the final stage of the World Grand Prix which will be held in Tokyo, Japan.

OTTAWA, Aug. 14 -- World No. 1 Roger Federer was shocked out of the Montreal Masters tennis tournament on Friday after losing in three sets to Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

The seventh-ranked Tsonga, staged a spectacular comeback to stun Federer 7-6, 1-6, 7-6 in the quarterfinals.

Trailing 1-5 in the third set, Tsonga staggered the 15-time grand slam winner by sweeping through the next five games to force a tiebreak.

Tsonga then delivered the knockout punch by winning the tie-break 7-3 in front of a shocked capacity centre court crowd.

The loss snapped Federer's 21-match winning streak. His last defeat was on May 2 in the semifinals of the Masters Series event in Rome where the Swiss fell to Novak Djokovic.
