OTTAWA, Aug. 14 -- World No. 1 Roger Federer was shocked out of the Montreal Masters tennis tournament on Friday after losing in three sets to Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

The seventh-ranked Tsonga, staged a spectacular comeback to stun Federer 7-6, 1-6, 7-6 in the quarterfinals.

Trailing 1-5 in the third set, Tsonga staggered the 15-time grand slam winner by sweeping through the next five games to force a tiebreak.

Tsonga then delivered the knockout punch by winning the tie-break 7-3 in front of a shocked capacity centre court crowd.

The loss snapped Federer's 21-match winning streak. His last defeat was on May 2 in the semifinals of the Masters Series event in Rome where the Swiss fell to Novak Djokovic.
