Ronaldo penalty helps Man Utd extend lead

LONDON, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Manchester United moved five points clear at the top of English Premier League as Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty kick gave them a 1-0 win over Everton at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Ronaldo scored in the 44th minute the only goal of the game, which saw United secure their record 12th successive clean sheet.

The champions' victory turned up the pressure on challengers Chelsea and Liverpool, joint second on 48 points with Aston Villa, who will meet at Anfield on Sunday.

Villa and Arsenal missed the chance to take closer order in the title race as both were held to goalless draws.

Villa could have moved into second place but they were unable to find a way beyond Wigan's defence. Arsene Wenger's side were increasingly frustrated as their draw with West Ham left them still five points away from a top-four finish.

Ten-men Stoke City lifted themselves out of the drop zone after beating Manchester City 1-0 thanks to James Beattie's header while a late winner from Kevin Davies gifted Bolton a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

Fulham increased Portsmouth's woes with a 3-1 victory at Craven Cottage, Hull and West Brom shared the points in a 2-2 tie at the KC Stadium and Middlesbrough's home meeting with Blackburn ended in a third 0-0 stalemate of a busy afternoon.

Everton held United at bay until one minute from half-time when Mikel Arteta brought down Michael Carrick on the edge of the box and Ronaldo stroke home the penalty.

Sir Alex Ferguson's men could have scored earlier but the post came to Everton's rescue on 26 minutes as Ronaldo's toe-poke came back off the upright and Carlos Tevez was offside as he tried to tuck home the rebound.

In the record-breaking game, United keeper Edwin van der Sar eclipsed the previous league record of 1,104 minutes without conceding a goal, which had stood for 30 years.

Arsenal's Champions League hopes suffered a dent while West Ham stretched their unbeaten run to eight games.

Neither side managed a chance on target in a dire first half dominated by Arsenal.

After the break Arsenal were all over West Ham but Emmanuel Adebayor wasted the game's two best chances with a shot wide and header straight at the keeper.

Carlos Alberto scores twice in Vasco victory

RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- In the third round of the Rio de Janeiro state soccer championships on Saturday, the home team of Vasco da Gama defeated Duque de Caxias 3-1.

The team's new star Carlos Alberto scored twice in the first half, electrifying the home crowd. The game was also a preview of the future match-up between the two teams in the second division of the 2009 Brazilian soccer championship.

The game's first goal came in the 5th minute of play. Vasco's Pimpao did not give up on a lose ball and won the dual with the Duque de Caxias defense.

Pimpao passed the ball off to a wide open Alex Teixeira, who then crossed the ball off to Carlos Alberto. Alberto tried to make his way towards the goal, but got tripped up. Despite being help back, Alberto managed to squeeze the ball past the goalkeeper.

The player's second goal came just 10 minutes later. Pimpao was taken down in the penalty box by Duque de Caxias' goalie Borges and was awarded a penalty kick.

Carlos Alberto was called in to take the kick and he did not disappoint, scoring in the 15th minute.

The team's last goal came in the 22nd minute of the second half. Off a dead ball foul, Paulo Sergio crossed the ball towards the front of the net where he found Nilton. The player out-jumped the defense and scored the last goal of the game.

The visiting team's only goal of the game came in the 11th minute of the first half. Edivaldo received the ball from Dudu and cleverly glided it over Vasco's goalie's head, Tiago.

In the next round of action, Vasco da Gama will travel to play Resende. Duque de Caxias will host Fluminense at their Los Larios stadium in the city of Xerem.

Corinthians wins third straight

RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- In just as many games on Saturday Corinthians won their third straight of the 2009 season. Even without team's most notable name, Ronaldo, the club seems to be on the right track on their way to winning the Sao Paulo state championship.

With a 4-1 score against Oeste, the team stands atop the leader board of the state tournament.

The focus of Mano Menezes' team is the stopped ball. Saturday's game proved that all the time spent by the head coach on the team's stopped ball plays has paid off as all four goals came while the ball was stopped.

In the 2nd minute of the first half, Corinthians lit up the scoreboard. On a corner kick, Eduardo Ramos sent the ball towards the front of the goal. Oeste's fullback Adriano attempted to kick the ball out of the area when he erred, sending the ball into his own net.

The team's second goal came in the 6th minute of the second half. Off a stopped ball, Diogo sent it towards the net when Otacilio Neto escaped from the defense to head the ball directly into the Oeste net.

In the 10th minute of the second half, Oeste was finally able to get on the scoreboard. After Chicao took down an Oeste forward in the penalty box, Dias scored the team's first and only goal of the game.

Corinthians continued their spree in the 14th minute of the second half. On another stopped ball foul, Chicao took the kick just outside of the penalty box. With marksmanship, he sent the ball just over the wall of defenders and into an unprotected Oestenet, scoring the team's third goal of the game.

The fourth and last goal of Corinthians came in the 44th minute of the second half Lulinha was taken down in the penalty box. After Souza pleaded to take the kick, amidst a booing home crowd, the player scored, sending the ball into the upper right corner of the goal.

In regard to their superstar, Ronaldo has officially dropped from 98 kilos to 93 kilos. However, the club awaits him to drop four more kilos before he enters the field. His forecasted return is set for early March.

Safina stays positive after bitter final loss at Australian Open

Dinara Safina of Russia returns the ball during the women's singles final against Serena Williams of the United States at Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne, Jan. 31, 2009.

MELBOURNE, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Third seed Dinara Safina said she was trying to stay positive despite an embarrassingly lopsided final loss to American Serena Williams at the Australian Open on Saturday.

"I hope it's not the last one, I still have time. I'll go on the court now and practice. After every lose, I try to take what was good and what was wrong," said the 22-year-old Safina, who has yet to win a career Grand Slam.

"As for those mistakes that I've been doing, I just want to work as hard as I can to make sure that they will never happen again and my opponents will not have those easy points next time."

Williams, the second seed at the year's first major, came out on absolute fire against the Russian, needing little more than 20 minutes to claim the opening set at love. A dozen winners but only two unforced errors flew off the Williams racquet.

It was more of the same in the second set. Safina was able to get three games to love but Williams was always in control, breaking back twice to take the set after a missed Safina drop shot.

"I don't have much to say, I felt like I am a ball boy on the court today," Safina said.

Serena Williams of the United States (L) and Dinara Safina of Russia pose with their trophies during the awarding ceremony after the women's singles final at Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne, Jan. 31, 2009. Williams won 2-0.

"She played exactly the way she had to play and she was much more aggressive and she just was taking time out of me, so I didn't have that much time to put back myself onto the court. She didn't even let me to come into the match."

The Russian women's number one committed that she was unhappy with her serving, saying she was struggling with serve throughout the whole tournament.

"I don't know. I've been working on my serve. Everything was fine. But just suddenly, the double faults came out. Now I just have to go back, take a little time and hope to get everything back in the place."

Safina said Williams has proved she has what it takes to become the world number one, but added that Justine Henin, the Belgian who retired last May while still ranked No. 1, is the best player she has ever played against.

"For me Justine was best. I don't have anything against Serena, but I love the way Justine was playing. I love the way she was on the court and all these things. Just maybe I like Justine more."

Chinese strongwoman Mu eyes golds in National Games and London Olympics

CHANGCHUN, Northeast China, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Mu Shuangshuang, one of Chinese ace weightlifters in the women's over-75kg class who missed the Beijing Olympics, kept training even in Chinese traditional Spring Festival and vowed to shine in both the National Games this year and the 2012 London Olympics.

"The Spring Festival which is known as the most important feast for the Chinese is not that special to me as I always spend the holidays on training as usual," Mu, 25, told Xinhua here on Saturday.

Mu, whose nick name is Jumbo, won the gold medal at the 15th Asian Games in Doha in 2006 but missed the chance to compete for China in the Beijing Olympics.

"I could not decide by myself to attend the Olympics. It was really a pity but could not prevent me from furthering my strength for the National Games and the next Olympics," Mu noted.

So far, Mu has all-day training on every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, half-day practice on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

Zimbabwe defeats Kenya by four wickets

NAIROBI, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Zimbabwe's national cricket team defeated Kenya by four wickets in their third One Day International played on Saturday in Nairobi to seal a series win in Nairobi.

A captain's performance by Prosper Utseya helped the visitors edge out the hosts in a tightly contested game where Kenya showed signs of rediscovering their poise and form.

Utseya scored 68 off just 65 balls as Zimbabwe reached the 235 target set by Kenya with 10 balls remaining. Kenya had won the toss and chose to bat scoring 234 all out in 49.3 overs.

Opener Peter Ongondo gave Kenya the perfect start picking two wickets to leave the victors at 51-2. Rajesh Bhudia, Nehemiah Odhiambo and Steve Tikolo then put Kenya in a great chance to win the match by claiming a wicket each to reduce the visitors to 103 for 5.

But Kenya's bete noire in the series Elton Chigumbura started the revival forging a partnership with Utseya and when he was caught leg before by Jimmy Kamande, Mutizwa provided Utseya with a foil as the visitors made certain of the series win.

Earlier, leg spinner Graeme Cremer claimed four wickets as Kenya were limited to 234 with their batsmen again failing to stand to the Zimbabwe attack.

Kenya got off to the worst possible start when Serene Waters was dismissed for golden duck after edging a Chris Mpofu delivery straight to the keeper.

Kenya's woes deepened 11 overs later when Kennedy Otieno was sent back to the pavilion by Ray Price. The home side continued to lose cheap wickets and was reduced to 95-5 before Collins Obuya steadied the ship with a useful 55.

Cremer struck at vital times throughout the innings, including a spell of three in six balls, beginning by removing Alex Obanda when he lofted to long on for a hard-fought 49.

Then in his next over he removed the key scalp of Steve Tikolo, who was beaten by one that skidded through. Two balls later and the shoddy side of Kenya's batting was again on display when Jimmy Kamande pulled lazily to midwicket.

Cremer was then soon making his mark and the series was rapidly slipping away from Kenya, but Obuya and Maurice Ouma stopped the slide with a stand of 79 in 14 overs.

Obuya went to his fifty off 59 balls before becoming Cremer's fourth wicket as Zimbabwe's fielders continued to hold their catches in the deep.

Nadal, Verdasco set up all-Spanish clash at Australian Open semis

Rafael Nadal of Spain celebrates after men's singles quarterfinal match against Gilles Simon of France at the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne, Jan. 28, 2009. Nadal won 3-0 (6-2, 7-5, 7-5).

MELBOURNE, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- World number one Rafael Nadal and countryman Fernando Verdasco both triumphed over French opponents in the quarterfinals on Wednesday for an all-Spanish men's singles semifinal at the Australian Open.

Nadal, the French Open, Wimbledon and Olympic champion, needed two hours and 28 minutes to beat Frenchman and sixth seed Gilles Simon.

Simon, who reached first Grand Slam quarterfinals, looked in a different league while facing a rampant Nadal.

The Frenchman did hit more winners in the match, registering 42to his name against 29 from Nadal, but he committed too many unforced errors with 41 compared to just 24 from the Spaniard.

After losing the first set 6-2, Simon raised up his game a little bit but he still could not match the powerful Spaniard, who played solid game to claim next two sets 7-5, 7-5.

Spanish No. 14 seed Verdasco continued his inspired run at the Melbourne Park by defeating fifth seed and last year's finalist Jo- Wilfried Tsonga 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 and reached his first Grand Slam semifinals.

The left-hander, who upset fourth seed and pre-tournament favourite Andy Murray of Britain in a five-set thriller, will crack into the ATP top 10 for the first time.

Just like what he did in the Murray clash, Verdasco again showed great resilience when under pressure, facing 13 break points against Tsonga but was only broken on two occasions.

Fernando Verdasco of Spain returns the ball during men's singles quarterfinal match against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France at the Australian Open tennis tournament in Melbourne, Jan. 28, 2009. Fernando Verdasco won 3-1(7-6, 3-6,6-3,6-2).

Having led his country in the absence of Nadal to victory over Argentina in Davis Cup finals last year, Verdasco admitted that the Davis Cup experience affected him a lot.

"That Davis Cup changed my life so much and gave me a lot of confidence and mentally made me much stronger for these matches here," he said.

"It's a Grand Slam and there are five sets match and a lot of pressure. That tie against Argentina makes me grow up and more like a tennis player."

Now Verdasco has the chance to cause another upset in the semifinals where he takes on compatriot Nadal.

"What I'm thinking right now is that I'm playing good. I'm feeling good. Anyway, I don't have pain in any part of my body. I'm feeling pretty good. And that's the most important thing," Verdasco said.

"Now my next round is gonna be against Nadal. Somebody always told me Murray is the tournament favorite, but as for me, Rafa is the toughest player in five-set matches.

"I believe in myself so much about my game, I'm feeling pretty good, and I just think that I can beat anyone. But, you know, the same way that I can win, I can lose. I'm playing the best players in the world."

In the woman's quarterfinals, American second seed Serena Williams came back from the brink of elimination to defeat Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova 5-7, 7-5, 6-1. She will in the semifinals face Russia's world number four Elena Dementieva.

The Russian outclassed unseeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2, 6-2 earlier on a sweltering noon.

S Africa withdraws controversial sports regulations

JOHANNESBURG, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- The South African government has withdrawn proposed sports regulations that would have given Sports Minister Makhenkesi Stofile the power to select teams, Beeld newspaper reported on Wednesday.

"The regulations would effectively have given Makhenkesi Stofile the power to prescribe who should play for the Springboks or open the bowling for the Proteas," reported the Afrikaans daily, quoting a senior government source.

The regulations were delivered to sports federations in December and the deadline for comment was shortly after Christmas.

The proposal was published as a supplement to the existing law on sport and recreation but Beeld was informed on Tuesday night that the regulations had been withdrawn.

South African Rugby president Oregan Hoskins said the regulations were unacceptable.

"I gave up my right to change teams long ago so that the final decision rests with the coach. Now the government can decide who plays or not?" commented Hoskins.

Real Madrid withdraw UEFA appeal over Diarra, Huntelaar

Real Madrid's Lass Diarra (front) fights for the ball with Deportivo Coruna's Rodolfo Bodipo during their Spanish First Division soccer match at Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid January 25, 2009.
Both of Real Madrid's winter signings played in the European competitions with their former club's: Ajax and Portsmouth, before joining the Spanish club during the winter transfer window.

UEFA rules state that a club can only inscribe one player who has played for a different team in Europe during the same season, something Real Madrid, Director of Sport Pedja Mijatovic overlooked when both players were signed.

Real Madrid had asked UEFA to allow them to allow both players to represent them in the Champions League this season, but this had been turned down as had their appeal to the UEFA appeals committee.

The club then took their case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, but decided to withdraw their appeal on advice from lawyers, who felt it had little chance of prospering.

Real Madrid must now decide which of their two new signings is included in their Champions League squad for when they play Liverpool in the first round of the knockout phase in February
