Fourteen injured in train-truck collision in Germany

BERLIN, Jan. 20 -- Fourteen people were injured in a train-truck collision in northwestern Germany on Wednesday, police said.

The train, carrying about 60 passengers, collided with a truck at a railroad crossing in the south of Braunschweig in the northwestern state of Lower Saxony.

The first car of the train derailed during the collision, police spokesman Joachim Grande said.

Five of the injured were in serious condition, Grande said.

Recovery efforts were expected to take several hours because a large amount of diesel fuel leaked from the truck in the collision, local media reported.

The cause of the accident remained under investigation.
