Bolt becomes ambassador-at-large of Jamaica

WASHINGTON, Nov. 12 -- Olympic champion and sprint superstar Usain Bolt was named an ambassador-at-large by Jamaica Prime Minister Bruce Golding during a ceremony in the capital, Kingston, on Thursday.

The Triple world and Olympic champion also received a diplomatic passport.

At 23, Bolt is the youngest person to receive the honor.

Last month, he received the Order of Jamaica. His homeland has also renamed a highway after the lanky Olympic and world 100 and 200-meter champion and record-holder.

"This is a big thing for me and I will try to do my best and will live up to your expectations," Bolt told Golding after accepting the document.

Golding praised Bolt as a role model who can continue to make Jamaica proud.

"We have a great athlete, a great icon, someone who can help to strengthen Jamaica's image right across the globe," Golding said.

Nadal looks to unseat Federer to seize top ranking by end of season

Rafael Nadal of Spain celebrates after defeating compatriot Tommy Robredo in the Paris Masters Series tennis tournament November 12, 2009.

PARIS, Nov. 13 -- World number two Rafael Nadal looks to unseat Roger Federer as world number one by the end of the season as the gritty spaniard remained in hunt for Paris Masters crown with a battling victory in the round of 16 on Thursday.

Nadal had needed to save five match points to get past Spanish compatriot Nicolas Almagro in a second round marathon of over three hours on Wednesday, and on Thursday he wobbled again against Tommy Robredo, another countryman and a player he had beaten in straight sets in all five of their previous encounters.

"I was a little less lucky than yesterday. I wasn't playing my best today, but I played better than yesterday," Nadal said of the6-3, 3-6, 7-5 win over Robredo.

With Federer losing to Frenchman Julien Benneteau in a shock upset on Wednesday, a win for Nadal in Sunday's final would leave him just 305 points adrift of his arch rival with the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals to come in London later this month.

Tommy Robredo of Spain returns the ball to compatriot Rafael Nadal during their match in the Paris Masters tennis tournament November 12, 2009.

Nadal ended Federer's long reign as world No.1 after winning the Beijing Olympics last year, but Federer bounced back to regain the top spot in July after winning both the French Open and Wimbledon titles.

Elsewhere, fourth seed Andy Murray lost 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 to Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic while Russian Nikolay Davydenko became the seventh player to qualify for the eight-man London TourFinals despite losing 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to Sweden's Robin Soderling in another third round match.

But Spain's Fernando Verdasco, who was holding on to the eighth and final slot, lost 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to Marin Cilic of Croatia.

His defeat meant that Davydenko was assured of finishing the week no lower than eighth which stamped his ticket for London.

Liu Xiang grabs hurdling hat-trick at Asian Championships

Liu Xiang of China celebrates the victory with the national flag after the final of men's 110m hurdles at the 18th Asian Athletics Championships in Guangzhou, south China's Guangdong Province, Nov. 12, 2009. Liu won the gold with 13.50 seconds.

Liu led all through with his teammate Shi Dongpeng running close behind him. Liu cleared the hurdles comfortably and finally cruised to easy win amid heavy rain and Shi took the silver in 13.67, while South Korean Park Tae-Kyong finished third in 13.82.

Liu's win ignited the passion of home crowd. Liu and Shi both waved the country's flag to the cheering home crowd to celebrate the victory. Liu then took off his jersey and threw it to the screaming crowd.

"I felt so good to race in the rain," Liu said. "Now I want to refresh myself with a warm bath."

Altogether seven gold medals were decided in Thursday's events. Five of them were clinched by Chinese athletes and the other two went to Bahrain and Japan.

The morning session had the men's 20km walk, in which the title went to China's pre-event favorite Li Jianbo. The 23-year-old achieved the victory amidst the rain in 1:22:55, and his team-mate Chu Yafei was second by only one second. The bronze went to South Korea's Park Chil-Sung at 1:24:51.

Tarek Mubark of Bahrain defended his title in the men's 3,000m steeplechase. The winner of the event in the 2006 Doha Asian Games, established an early lead to clock eight minutes and 33.58 seconds in a rainy night.

"The rain was not a problem," said he. "I'm happy to defend my title and now I have no regrets here."

"My aim is to be an Olympic champion, and I have thought about it for over five years," he added.

Lin Xiangqian of China fought back from behind to take the silver in 8:34.13. Abubaker Ali Kamal of Qatar, bronze medallist of 800m and 1,500m at last Asian championships, finished third in 8:34.73.

Liu Xiang of China competes during the final of men's 110m hurdles at the 18th Asian Athletics Championships in Guangzhou, south China's Guangdong Province, Nov. 12, 2009. Liu won the gold with 13.50 seconds.

In men's long jump, athletes from Saudi Arabia have been crowned at five straight Asian championships since 2000, but this time the domination was broken down by China's Li Jinzhe.

Li, 20, posted a mark of 8.16m, making him unbeatable in the final. The pre-event favorite Hussain Taher A Al Saba of Saudi Arabia recorded a below-par 7.96m, far from personal and seasonal best of 8.35m.

Al Saba grabbed the silver and China's Yu Zhenwei was third.

"I perform normally today," said 30-year-old Al Saba. "I would probably clinch the gold medal if I'm going to participate in next year's Asian Games."

Unexpected results also came in women's pole vault final, where China's Li Caixia took an unexpected win while the bronze medalist at 2005 Asian championships, Malaysia's Roslinda Samsu, flopped on a surprise.

Li, 22, chose the opening height of 3.80m and then cleared the following three heights on her first attempt. But She failed on the height of 4.45m, so the 4.30m finally turned out to be her winning jump.

"I am not quite satisfied with today's performance as I failed in challenging the height of 4.45m," said Li.

Samsu crossed an opening height of 3.60m on her second attempt but failed to overtake the next height of 3.80m, a far cry from her personal best of 4.40m and seasonal best 4.35m, and ranked only fifth in the final.

China's Wu Sha placed second with 4.15m and South Korea's Choi Yun-Hee the third with 4.00m.

The women's javelin final should have put on a very close tussle among the leading three athletes in Asia, China's Liu Chunhua, Li Lingwei and Japan's Yuki Ebihara, but Ebihara, bronze medalist at the 2006 Doha Asian Games, ranked only fourth in the final, as she posted a below-par mark of 47.03m, more than 13 meters shorter than her personal and season best of 60.84m.

Liu won the gold with 13.50 seconds.

China's Liu Chunhua bagged gold with an overwhelming 57.93m. Li placed second with 55.13m and South Korea's Kim Kyong-Ae got a bronze with 52.78m.

Japanese Tatsumi Yoshika claimed the third gold medal for her country as she won the women's 3,000 meters steeplechase final.

Tatsumi, the pre-event favorite, clocked 10 minutes and 5.94 seconds to win the race amid heavy rain, beating Sudha Singh of Indonesia by 4.83 seconds. The bronze also went to Indonesia's Kiran Tiwari in 10:34.55.

"I was in good form," said the winner. "The weather was not a problem to me. I am happy to be the gold medalist."

"My aim is to win a gold in the Asian Games next year," she added.

By far, China, Japan and Bahrain ranked top three on the medal stable. China has bagged 30 medals, while Japan garnered 10 and Bahrain three.

On day four, there will be 11 gold medals decided at the 18th Asian Athletics Championships.

40 cleared after exposure to unidentified white powder in NY

People had intimate contact with envelopes containing white powder are investigated in a vehicle in New York, the United States, Nov. 10, 2009. Envelopes containing white powder were delivered Monday to three missions to the United Nations in midtown Manhattan, touching off a security scare in central New York City, officials said here on Monday night. The three missions are the Missions of Austria, France and Uzbekistan to the United Nations.

NEW YORK, Nov. 10 -- Forty people exposed to an unidentified white powder delivered in envelopes to midtown Manhattan here had no symptoms of contamination after being treated, officials said late Monday.

None of them complained of any ailments, said Firefighter Jose Costa, a spokesman for the Fire Department of New York.

The envelopes with unknown white powder were received between 4:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. EST (2100 and 2330 GMT) Monday in offices of the United Nations missions of Austria, France and Uzbekistan, which are in three different locations in midtown Manhattan, a New York City police spokesman said.

The UN headquarters is located in New York City and Austria holds the rotating president of the UN Security Council this month.

Costa said 33 people were being treated outside the French mission, just one city block from the UN campus. A few others showered in a red tent nearby.

Those people were temporarily isolated in a Fire Department bus labeled Mobile Respiratory Treatment Unit. One bearded young man, waving at someone inside the bus attempted to approach the vehicle, but was stopped by a policeman. "That's my wife," he said, but the officer blocked his way.

Word came that an initial field test on one of the envelopes came back negative to any dangerous substance, but the Federal Bureau of Investigation denied there had been any field tests.

An FBI spokesman said the agency was assisting the New York Police Department in investigating the envelopes. He said the New York City Department of Health was testing the white powder.

The incidents recalled 2001 anthrax attacks in which a handful of people were injured.

Obama honors 13 killed in shooting at Fort Hood

HOUSTON, Nov. 10-- U.S. President Barack Obama participated in a memorial service at the Fort Hood Army base, Texas, Tuesday to honor 13 people killed by a U.S. Army psychiatrist.

Obama honored the men and women killed in Thursday's shooting rampage for their service, and said that the fact the they were killed on American soil makes "the tragedy even more painful."

U.S. President Barack Obama, accompanied by his wife Michelle Obama, participates in a memorial service on November 10, 2009 at the Fort Hood Army base, Texas, to honor 13 people killed by a U.S. Army psychiatrist .

"This is a time of war. And yet these Americans did not die on a foreign field of battle," Obama said. "They were killed here, on American soil, in the heart of this great American community. It is this fact that makes the tragedy even more painful and even more incomprehensible."

"Their life's work is our security, and the freedom that we too often take for granted. Every evening that the sun sets on a tranquil town; every dawn that a flag is unfurled; every moment that an American enjoys life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness-- that is their legacy," the president said.

U.S. President Barack Obama, accompanied by his wife Michelle Obama, participates in a memorial service on November 10, 2009 at the Fort Hood Army base, Texas, to honor 13 people killed by a U.S. Army psychiatrist .

The president recalled memories of those killed. "Neither this country - nor the values that we were founded upon - could exist without men and women like these thirteen Americans. And that is why we must pay tribute to their stories, " he said.

The men and women killed at Fort Hood embody responsibility "in an age of selfishness" and "in an era of division, they call upon us to come together. In a time of cynicism, they remind us of who we are as Americans," the president said.

Obama also vowed that justice will be done. "We are a nation of laws whose commitment to justice is so enduring that we would treat a gunman and give him due process, just as surely as we will see that he pays for his crimes."

The boots, helmets and rifles of the slain soldiers are placed behind each of their service photographs on November 10, 2009 at the Fort Hood Army base, Texas, to honor 13 people killed by a U.S. Army psychiatrist.

Tuesday's memorial ceremony includes prayers, speeches, a sermon and a "roll call" tribute to the 13 dead.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Army Chief of Staff George Casey, Texas governor Rick Perry and more than a dozen members of Congress were among the roughly 15,000 estimated to have attended the service before the III Corps building at Fort Hood.

In front of the podium, the boots, helmets and rifles of the slain soldiers sat behind each of their service photographs.

Some 545 soldiers from Fort Hood have been killed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, said Robert Cone, the post's commander. "But never did we expect to pay such a high price at home."

"No words can fully address your grief and sadness," Cone told the families. "But it is important to know you are not alone."

Obama delayed his departure for Asia by a day to make the ceremony service.

The president and his wife, Michelle, arrived in Killeen before noon Central time. Before attending the ceremony, the Obamas visited privately with the families of those killed.

The shooting, the worst in history at a U.S. military base, took place 1:30 p.m. CST (1930 GMT) Thursday at a family readiness area at Fort Hood, the country's largest military installation. Thirteen people were killed and another 29 were wounded.

The suspect in the shooting, Nidal Malik Hasan, a Army mental health doctor, is going to be deployed overseas, very likely in Afghanistan and he "was disturbed" about his overseas deployment, military sources said.

Chinese singer Lei Jia (L) and Tan Jing pose for photos during the press conference of Chinese Opera Mulan in Tokyo, Nov. 10, 2009. The Chinese Opera Mulan will be performed from Nov. 11 in Japan.

It represents the aspiration and hope that the Chinese people have long cherished for peace and a tranquil life, said Li, who is deputy chief of publicity division of the People's Liberation Army's (PLA) General Political Department.

Li also voiced his belief that the opera will become popular with the Japanese audience and strike a responsive chord in their hearts.

Mulan Psalm is based on the well-known Chinese folktale heroine Mulan who disguised herself as a man to replaced her ailing father in the army and saved her country from the intruders.

The opera was first staged in Beijing in 2004, and Peng Liyuan, a celebrated Chinese soprano, played the leading role of heroine Mulan. It has toured across China ever since.

In 2005 and 2008, Mulan Psalm was also staged at New York's Lincoln Center and Vienna's State Opera House respectively.

At the invitation of Japan's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Chinese performing troupe, with Peng Liyuan as art director, is scheduled to put on four performances of Mulan Psalm in Tokyo and Sapporo from Nov. 11 to 20.

Real Madrid humiliated in King's Cup early exit

MADRID, Nov. 10 -- Real Madrid culminated one of the most embarrassing moments in the club's history when it crashed out of the Spanish King's Cup to Alcorcon on Tuesday night.

Real Madrid spent over 250 million Euros on players over the summer, but went out 4-1 on aggregate to a side that plays in the third tier of Spanish soccer and which has a total annual budget of around 1 million Euros.

A large part of the damage had been done two weeks ago when Real lost the first leg of the tie 4-0 away to Alcorcon.

However, with the team playing the return leg in front of a packed fans in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, it was expected that Manuel Pellegrini's side would go close to overturning the first leg deficit.

Nothing could have been further from the truth. Despite fielding a side that was virtually his first choice 11, Pellegrini could only watch as Real failed to make any impression on their spirited opponents, who were playing the biggest game of their lives.

It was not until the 82nd minute of the game that Real finally opened the scoring thanks to Rafael Van der Vaart, but by then it was far too late to have any chance of adding the three extra goals needed to take the match into extra time.

The game ended with the fans in Bernabeu undecided whether or not to applaud the Alcorcon players or to boo their own.

Finally they decided to direct their anger on coach Manuel Pellegrini, whose job once again is in the balance after one of the most humiliating nights ever witnessed in the Bernabeu.

Yi was subject to injury and out of action last week, who sprained right knee ligament in a game against Bobcats last Monday and is expected recover within a month.

Real Madrid coach Pellegrini defends Cup exit

Real Madrid's coach Manuel Pellegrini reacts during their King's Cup soccer match against Alcorcon at Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid November 10, 2009.

MADRID, Nov. 10 -- Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini defended his tactics after watching his side knocked out of the Kings Cup by a side that plays two categories below them.

Real Madrid defeated Segunda B outfit Alcorcon 1-0 in the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday night, but crashed out of the competition 4-1 on aggregate after losing 4-0 two weeks ago.

The game ended with handkerchiefs waved in protest at the players and the coach, who was criticized for replacing midfielderLassana Diarra with Marcelo with 20 minutes still to go.

"The public were angry when Lass went off and I understand that because he is a player who gives everything. However he had missed a week because of a family problem and this was his fourth game in12 days. I didn't want to risk him suffering a muscle problem, it was dangerous for him to continue and I wanted to look after him," said Pellegrini.

"If I had been selfish, I would have avoided the criticism, but I was thinking more about the team than myself," he said.

Pellegrini's job is again in danger after this defeat, but he insisted he felt he at least had the support of the players.

"The players are behind me, but it's not easy to overturn a 4-0defeat, because you are always playing against the score, against the rivals and against your own nerves," he said, preferring to focus on other competitions.

"We are a point off Barcelona in the League and leaders in our group in the Champions League. This is going to end well," he insisted.

Real Madrid the big victims on night of Cup shocks in Spain

Real Madrid's Raul Gonzalez (L) and Alcorcon's Inigo Lopez fight for the ball during their King's Cup soccer match at Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid November 10, 2009.

MADRID, Nov. 10 -- Real Madrid was the biggest name to be knocked out of the last 32 of the Spanish King's Cup on Tuesday night.

Real Madrid beat Segunda B (third tier) side Alcorcon 1-0 in the Santiago Bernabeu, but lost the overall tie 4-1 on aggregate.

It is one of the most embarrassing results in the club's long history and could lead to coach Manuel Pellegrini losing his job.

Rafael Van der Vaart scored the only goal of the game with just eight minutes remaining and at the final whistle the fans in the Bernabeu vented their fury on Pellegrini.

However, the Bernabeu was not the only Cup shock of the evening. Valencia was held to a 2-2 draw at home to another Segunda B side - Alcoyano and only qualified for the last 16 thanks to its 1-0 win in the away leg.

Second Division Celta Vigo won 1-0 in Tenerife, to go through 2-1 on aggregate against a side recently promoted to the Primera Liga. Meanwhile Recreativo Huelva qualified on penalties after a 1-1 draw away to Sporting Gijon.

Deportivo la Coruna was another Primera Liga team lucky to go through. Miguel Angel Lotina's side only drew 0-0 at home to Second division Murcia, but made good its 1-0 triumph away from home a fortnight ago.

Wall Street surges to year highs

NEW YORK, Nov. 9 -- Wall Street surged on Monday as the Group of 20 (G20) nations agreed to maintain measures to boost economic growth. All the major indexes set new highs of 2009 at the closing.

The rally followed the lead of overseas markets, which rose as commodities rallied and the dollar declined after officials from the Group of 20 countries agreed to keep their economic stimulus measures in place.

Though a series of positive signs have shown that global economy is in the recovery process, the G20 policymakers agreed to maintain support for the recovery until it is assured in order to restore the global economy and financial system to health.

The U.S. dollar tumbled sharply after the news over the weekend. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of foreign currencies, fell to its lowest level in nearly 15 months.

Due to the weak dollars, gold futures reached record highs while prices of commodities soared. Energy and basic materials sectors rose the most in the stock markets.

Shares of Sprint Nextel, the third largest U.S. mobile service provider, rose more than 20 percent, as the company announced that it will be eliminating up to 2,500 people in the fourth quarter to reduce costs.

Radio Shack's shares jumped to a 52-week-high amid expectations that the addition of Apple Inc's iPhone to Radio Shack's stores will boost earnings.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 203.52 points, or 2.03 percent, to 10,226.94. The Standard & Poor's 500 index was up 23.78 points, or 2.22 percent, to 1,093.08. The Nasdaq composite index advanced 41.62 points, or 1.97 percent, to 2,154.06.
