Bayern beat Frankfurt, Stuttgart beaten

BERLIN, Oct. 24 -- German record champions Bayern Munich defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 at home on Saturday, while Stuttgart lost to Hannover 0-1.

Bayern Munich pulled it off at the death in what had been labelled a "must-win" game against Eintracht Frankfurt. An 88th-minute header from Daniel van Buyten secured them a 2-1 victory, after the visitors had gone ahead in the second half.

Bayern went into the game under pressure from the top down, in the form of CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge's call for a "response" to their midweek Champions League defeat at Bordeaux.

That response took the initial form of a mixture of robust tackling and sloppy passing in the final third of the park. On six minutes German striker Miroslav Klose nearly had them in front however, firing a shot on the turn just wide after a cross from defender Philipp Lahm reached him by way of Luca Toni's knee.

Eintracht were holding their shape well against the home side in the opening stages and it was not until midway through the half that Bayern were able to carve out another clear-cut opportunity.

A couple of minutes before half time Toni was in the thick of it again, getting off a shot from the edge of the box that rattled the post.

After the break, Bayern coach Louis van Gaal brought Robben on for Klose in the 59th minute and the effect was instantaneous – at the other end. Patrick Ochs freed Alexander Meier up inside the box and the striker coolly slotted the ball past Bayern goalie Jorg Butt.

Five minutes later, Butt pushed away a shot by Ochs from a tight angle as Frankfurt warmed to their attacking game.

Just when things were starting to look rocky for Bayern however, Muller put in a high cross, striker Mario Gomez - who had only come off the bench seven minutes earlier - got to the ball ahead of Nikolov in the air, and Robben was left with the task of steering it into the empty net.

Three minutes later a header from Toni pulled an acrobatic save out of Nikolov as the hosts tried to reassert their dominance. For all their effort, the game looked to be heading for a draw, but with just two minutes of regulation time remaining Muller latched onto a long ball from Lahm and set up van Buyten to head home the winner.

The match between Hannover 96 and VfB Stuttgart ended with a 1-0 defeat for Stuttgart. Both teams started highly motivated, both struggled to produce scoring chances.

At the 30.minute first opportunity for Hannovers Ivorian striker Didier Ya Konan, who opened the scoring, the sole goal for the game.

The game between Hoffenheim and new boys Nuernberg turned out to be sweeping victory for the host, which secured three goals to humiliate Nuernburg.

Another sweeping victory on Saturday went to Bundesliga newcomer Mainz 05, who crashed Freiburg 3-0 at home.

The match between Borussia M'gladbach and Koeln ended goalless.

On Sunday, Bundesliga bottom team Hertha will host defending Champion Wolfsburg; Schalke are to receive Bundesliga runners-up Hamburger SV while Bochum will visit Bremen.

Chelsea demolish Blackburn 5-0 to top Premier League

LONDON, Oct. 24 -- The commanding Chelsea crushed Blackburn 5-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday to return to the top of Premier League.

The visitors were totally out of pace in front of the confident Blues who had just sent off Atletico de Madrid 4-0 three days ago in the European Champions League group stage even though their top scorer Didier Drogba was absent.

Chelsea were denied several times by Blackburn's goalkeeper Paul Robinson in the first period but were granted the lead when Gael Givet diverted Nicolas Anelka's cross into his own net in the20th minutes.

Then Chelsea enjoyed their harvest through ruthless attacks with Frank Lampard opened the second-half score three minutes after the break. Four minutes later, Ghanaian midfielder Michael Essien fired home from long range to make it three.

Meanwhile, the powerful striker Drogba kept threatening in front of Blackburn's struggling defence and when he pounced into the box in the 59th minute, Ryan Nelsen tripped him to concede a penalty to the hosts. Lampard slotted in the bottom left corner with hesitation.

Drogba concluded Chelsea's scoring show by nodding home Michael Ballack's corner in the 64th minute.

Leaders Chelsea are two points ahead of Manchester United and the defending champions are slated to visit Liverpool on Sunday.

With new owner Carson Yeung on the stands, Birmingham City edged Sunderland 2-1 to claim their third win in Premier League this season.

Birmingham dominated the first half and Sebastian Larsson's free kick flipped into the net after bouncing Liam Ridgewell's body in the 37th minutes.

Three minutes into the second period, forward James McFadden added a goal to cheer the home fans.

Although Sunderland fought back hard later and came closer with Scott Dann's own goal in the 82nd minute, Birmingham kept three points in pocket at last.

In addition, Tottenham Spur were depressed at home as Glenn Whelan scored the only goal for Stoke City. Burnley were defeated 3-1 by visiting Wigan.

Hull City and Porsmouth drew 0-0. Wolverhampton and Aston Villa claimed one point each after a 1-1 tie.

Liu Xiang takes center stage, Liu Hong crowned in women's 20km walk

Liu Xiang representing Shanghai Municipality competes during the qualification match of the men's 110m-hurdle at the 11th Chinese National Games in Jinan, east China's Shandong Province, Oct. 24, 2009. Liu qualified for the final with a time of 13.75 seconds.

JINAN, East China, Oct. 24 -- Star hurdler Liu Xiang came to spotlight on Saturday night as the Athens Olympic champion easily cruised into the 110m finals at the 11th Chinese National Games.

The 26-year-old Liu, who finished second at the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix last month, exploded out of starting blocks and took the lead along with Ji Wei in the last three hurdles.

Liu slowed down before hitting the line and finished in 13.75.

The result was good enough for the "flying man" to advance to the final, but far off his former world record and personal best 12.88 seconds.

"It was just an ordinary match, and everything went all right," Liu said shortly after the race.

In the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix last month, Liu finished second in a wind-aided 13.15 seconds.

Liu's national teammates Shi Dongpeng and Xie Wenjun topped the other two groups in 13.84 and 13.79 seconds, respectively. They both qualified for the finals on Sunday night.

Elsewhere, women's 20km walk in the morning produced the world's top level results.

Liu Hong, bronze medalist at the Berlin World Championships, first barged into the stadium to give Guangdong delegation a gold.

Her winning time -- one hour and 28 minutes 11 seconds -- is already among the world's best. With two more seconds fall, she can equal the Olympic champion and Russian world title holder Olga Kaniskinaset's 1:28:09 in Berlin.

In August's championships, the 22-year-old Liu finally took the bronze with 1:29:10 in front of Berlin's Brandenburg Gate. It was the first walk medal for Chinese women in 10 years since Liu Hongyu and Wang Yan finished 1-2 in the Seville World Championships in 1999.

Liu's personal best was 1:27.17 set in Beijing Olympics when she disappointedly finished fourth to miss a elusive medal.

Following Liu, Li Yanfei of Shandong finished second in 1:28.57,and Jiangsu's Bai Yanmin stood third in 1:29.17. Both are also among the world's leading results.

The other two golds of the day went to Anhui's Wu Sha in the women's pole vault with 4.40 meters, and Shandong's Li Shaojie in the men's discus throw with 60.39 meters. Both results are far away from the world's top level.

Barcelona aims to recapture form at home to Zaragoza

MADRID, Oct. 24 -- FC Barcelona looks to recapture its early season form when Zaragoza visits the Camp Nou Stadium on Sunday night.

Barcelona claimed a hard-fought draw in Valencia last Saturday but then lost at home to Rubin Kazan in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

In neither game did Pep Guardiola's players find their best form and some such as Leo Messi looked tired after a busy early season fixture calendar.

Now Barcelona needs a win to maintain its lead over Real Madrid.

The good news at the club is that captain Carles Puyol has agreed a new contract, while defenders Rafael Marquez and Dmitro Chygrynskiy are both available after injuries.

Thierry Henry, meanwhile remains sidelined with a slight muscle problem.

Zaragoza travels after a decent start to the season on the club's return to the Primera Liga. Former Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant has been its best player to date.

Meanwhile there are another six Primera Liga matches to be played on Sunday night.

Xerez travels to Tenerife after winning its first game of the season last weekend at home to Villarreal. Tenerife coach Jose Luis Oltra was given a vote of confidence following last weekend's defeat to Espanyol.

Villarreal coach Ernesto Valverde, however, will almost certainly be sacked should his side lose at home to Malaga.

Bottom of the table Villarreal is without a win all season and on Thursday lost in the Europa Liga away to Lazio. Malaga is second from bottom and has only one win all campaign. That came on the first day of the season at home to Atletico Madrid.

Deportivo la Coruna aims to keep its excellent start going away to Valladolid. Deportivo is fourth in the table, while Valladolid is struggling fourth from bottom.

Getafe coach Michel has asked his players to be more aggressive for the visit of Athletic club Bilbao. Getafe has looked strong at home this campaign but has struggled on the road.

Athletic meanwhile picked up a morale boosting European win on Thursday night.

Osasuna aims to keep the momentum going from last weekend's 3-0win when Jose Antonio Camacho's side visits Racing Santander, while Valencia coach Unai Emery takes his team to visit former club Almeria.

Valencia slipped up in Europe during the week and Emery needs agood result to ease some of the pressure. The good news is that striker David Villa is available for selection.

Chelsea, Man United secure third consecutive, Real defeated by AC Milan

Italian AC Milan players celebrate a goal during match against the hosting Spanish Real Madrid at the European Champions League group stage on Oct. 21, 2009. AC Milan beat Real Madrid 3-2.

LONDON, Oct. 21 -- Premier League top teams Manchester United and Chelsea both claimed third consecutive win at the European Champions League group stage while AC Milan beat hosting Real Madrid 3-2 with Pato's late goal on Wednesday.

Although Salomon Kalou squandered a few chances in front of the visiting Atletico de Madrid , the 24-year-old Ivorian finally proved that he was the right one to replace banned countryman Didier Drogba with one goal each half.

With four minutes remaining in the first half, Kalou drilled in Ashley Cole's cross. Then, seven minutes after the restart, the striker headed home Frank Lampard's corner to make it 2-0.

The visitors seemed losing their determination to fight with two goals behind, giving the Blues more chances to consolidate their dominance at Stamford Bridge.

Lampard played a one-two with Essien in the 69th minute before beating the 20-year-old goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo from the edge of the box. The fourth goal of Chelsea came from Luis Pereathe as the Colombian veteran headed Florent Malouda's free kick into his own net in the stoppage time.

Man United were without five first team regulars against CSKA Moscow as Wayne Rooney, Patrice Evra, Darren Fletcher, Park Ji-sung and Ryan Giggs all stay in Manchester due to injuries. Besides, the Premier League champions have never overplayed any Russian side in Europe after five attempts.

However, the "Red devils" showed great ambitions in the artificial pitch at the Luzhniki Stadium especially with Nani playing energetically. Their patience and consistency was finally rewarded a late winner in the 86th minute when Antonio Valencia slotted in after Dimitar Berbatov had flicked on Nani's cross.

With nine points in pocket, Man United enjoyed a five-point advantage in Group B over second placed Wolfsburg as the Bundesliga champions drew 0-0 with Besiktas from Turkey.

Chelsea took the first position in Group D after the three-game winning streak with Porto trailed behind in six points. Porto defeated Apoel Nicosia 2-1 home, leaving the visitors stay with only one point just as the struggling Atletico de Madrid did.

In the classic between Real Madrid and AC Milan, Brazalian striker Pato shot home the decider with two minutes left, helping the Serie A side grabbing three points from Bernabeu.

Real Madrid broke the deadlock on 19 minutes when Raul Gonzalez clipped in his 66th Champions League goal. But Andrea Pirlo and Pato scored successively within four minutes in the second half to put the visitors ahead.

A low shot from Royston Drenthe brought Madrid back to parity but Pato volley in the 88th minute decided Milan's win.

Milan and Madrid led Group C with six points each followed by Zurich and Marseille with three points separately. Zurich was overcame 1-0 by the French side.

In Group A, Bordeaux conquered Bayern Munich 2-1 home and Juventus sent off Maccabi Haifa 1-0. Bordeaux led in the group with seven points while Juve followed in five points.

JINAN, East China, Oct. 21 -- China's Olympic champion Liu Zige demolished world record to grab the women's 200m butterfly title at the National Games on Wednesday.

Liu Zige from Shanghai jubilates after winning women's 200m butterfly final of swimming at the 11th Chinese National Games in Jinan, east China's Shandong Province, Oct. 21, 2009. Liu won the gold with 2 minutes and 01.81 seconds, and exceeded the world record of the event.

The 22-year-old Liu was awarded gold by China's sports minister Liu Peng to the noisy crowd.

"Every tiny progress could make a new world record, which is very common in the pool," she said, adding she set rhythm for herself in the competition.

She attributed her success to her tough training after the Rome World Championships. "I trained very hard after I came back from the Rome Worlds, without even one day off," said Liu, silver medalist of 200m butterfly in Rome. "I cooperate very well with my coach, who set higher standard for my training in terms of intensity and capacity."

Liu's coach Jin Wei foresaw her remarkable win in the 200m final, as he told reporters ahead of the competition that Liu would not only defend her title but also break the world record.

At the Beijing Olympics, Liu clocked 2:04.18 seconds in the 200mbutterfly final to win China's only swimming gold, wiping over one second off the then world best set by Schipper in 2006.

Her teammate Jiao Liuyang took the silver in 2:04.72, also inside the former world mark.

The Chinese swimming sensation powered home in an amazing 2:01.81, shaving over two seconds off previous world mark of 2:03.41 set by Australian Jessica Schipper at the Rome World Championships last summer.

She was almost four seconds clear of her long-time arch rival Jiao Liuyang, runner-up of the Beijing Olympics, who posted 2:05.57for a silver medal. The bronze medal went to Kong Jie from the Chinese Army team who finished 2:05.57.

Liu's splash of speed lit up the Natatorium of Jinan. To the cheers of the exciting home fans, Liu seized the lead immediately off the pad and roared through the water to secure the victory, leaving the rest of her rivals lamenting the unreachable gap.

"I don't think the result today is fast enough for me, and there is still room for me to better the record in the future," said a smiling Liu after the competition.

It is the first swimming world record established at the Chinese National Games slated for Oct. 16-28 in Jinan of east China's Shandong province.

Any eligible player free to go, says tennis official

JINAN, East China, Oct. 21 -- With China's top tennis aces freed to play the professional tour, the country's tennis governing body has kept an open mind, willing to allow more eligible players to test water in the world stage by themselves.

"Chinese tennis has changed a lot in the past few years and as the governing body, we also have to make change to adjust to the situation," Gao Shenyang, vice director with the Chinese Tennis Association (CTA), told Xinhua on Wednesday.

The decision to allow Zheng Jie, Li Na, Yan Zi and Peng Shuai to keep 92 percent of their earnings and choose their own coaches was a reflection of a rapidly changing society.

"Maybe you can put constraints on them but it will not be a win-win result," said Gao.

"The reform is not an expedient, it's based on the mutual understanding. If the coming players are eligible, we also allow them to go it alone.

"But they have to come of age physically and mentally for the big change. Haste makes no speed," he added.

Before the change, the four women kept only 35 percent of their winnings. In return, the CTA covered all their travel, coaching and equipment expenses.

The system worked well as China's tennis stars started to make a splash in the WTA tour, but it also brought about spat on the surging prize money which reached the climax when Peng, a then Chinese number one, asked to leave the state system in 2005, leading to a war of words between Peng and the CTA.

"The state system contributed a lot to their growth and is even admired by foreign countries. It's a sure thing that the state system will rule the sport for a long time," Gao said.

Li, the first Chinese to reach the last eight of a Grand Slam tournament, has collected 646,000 U.S. dollars after playing all by herself while Zheng, the Grand Slam doubles winner, has won 530,000U.S. dollars. Expect the prize money, the players also earned a large amount of sponsorship.

The CTA is keeping close contact with the four self-managed players and Gao had no doubt that they will all conduct their duty when it comes to the Olympics, Asian Games or Fed Cup.

Rubin Kazan, which are making debut at the Champions League, twice led at Camp Nou to beat a star-studded team containing Lionel Messi, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Andres Iniesta.

Adding to the high drama on the Matchday 3 in the group stage of the Champions League, Cesar Fabian Delgado scored in injury time at Anfield to hand Liverpool a fourth straight loss for the first time in 22 years.

Inter Milan trailed twice at home but the Italian champions salvaged a 2-2 draw with Dynamo Kiev through equalizers by Dejan Stankovic and Walter Samuel.

But Inter is now last in Group F after stretching its winless streak in Europe to six matches.

Elsewhere, Fiorentina won 4-3 at Debreceni and Arsenal drew 1-1at AZ Alkmaar.

Aleksandr Ryazantsev put Russian champions Rubin Kazan ahead after just 75 seconds by running onto a loose ball and smashing a shot beyond goalkeeper Victor Valdes.

Iniesta and Messi each had an appeal for a penalty turned down before Zlatan Ibrahimovic equalized for the Spanish champions three minutes after halftime.

But Alejandro Dominguez put Gokdeniz Karadeniz through into the area 25 minutes later and the latter one silenced the home crowd with an angled shot.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic came close to a second equalizer when he hit the crossbar with 11 minutes left and midfielder Yaya Toure hit the post with a header in the fourth minute of injury time.

Rubin, Barcelona and Dynamo Kiev all have four points from three games in Group F. Inter has three points.

Liverpool's troubled season continued when it was beaten by Lyon and lost captain Steven Gerrard to a groin injury that could keep him out of Sunday's Premier League match against Manchester United.

Yossi Benayoun had put the five-time champions ahead four minutes before halftime but an injury-hit home side conceded to Maxime Gonalons midway through the second half and was then hit by a counterattack in injury time.

Sidney Govou sent a pass right across the goalmouth and, with the home defense hesitating, Cesar Fabian Delgado arrived at the far post to score the winner.

Liverpool has three points from three Group E matches, six fewer than ;leader Lyon and three fewer than Fiorentina, which recovered from conceding a second-minute goal to win 4-3 at Debreceni.

Sevilla went five points clear at the top of Group G with a straightforward 3-1 win at Stuttgart, which only scored in the 74th at 3-0 down.

The Spanish team has a maximum nine points. Next is Unirea Urziceni, which benefited from two own goals to win 4-1 at Rangers.

Rangers had led through a second-minute own goal by Ricardo Vilana, but the Romanian team fought back with Marius Bilasco and Pablo Brandan scoring either side of own goals by Kyle Lafferty and Lee McCulloch.

The win moved Unirea three points ahead of the Scottish champions in its first Champions League season.

Arsenal's lead in Group H was cut to a single point after Mendes da Silva scored in the third minute of injury time to earn AZ a draw.

Cesc Fabregas had put the Gunners ahead in the 36th from a pass by Robin van Persie but Mendes da Silva volleyed from close range to earn his team a second point of the season.
