Liverpool goes top, Chelsea title hopes in jeopardy

LONDON, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- Fernando Torres scored an injury-time winner to send Liverpool back to the top of the Premier League while Chelsea had their title hopes seriously dented after another frustration on Saturday.

Liverpool left it very late to claim a dramatic 3-2 victory at Portsmouth as Dirk Kuyt fired an equalizer five minutes before Torres came off the bench to secure the three points, which lifted them one point above champions Manchester United.

Rafael Benitez's side now have 54 points from 25 matches but United have two games in hand including Sunday's clash at West Ham United.

Chelsea suffered another hammer blow as they dropped two more home points in the goalless draw with Hull, which left them blue in fourth place on 49 points.

The final whistle was met by a chorus of boos around Stamford Bridge and a banner unfurled by fans called for the sacking of Brazilian manager Luiz Felipe Scolari.

"We rather huffed and puffed if the truth be known. We were a bit lucky to keep a clean sheet in the end," said assistant manager Ray Wilkins.

Chelsea have dropped 16 points at home this season.

Villa took the chance and a 2-0 win at Blackburn Rovers, thanks to goals from James Milner and Gabriel Agbonlahor, put them into the top three and two points clear of Chelsea.

Newcastle United gained an important win at relegation rivals West Bromwich Albion to provide relief to hospitalized manager JoeKinnear.

Brazilian striker Jo enjoyed an impressive debut in Everton as he earned a penalty before scoring a double himself for a 3-0 triumph over Bolton Wanderers at Goodison Park.

Manchester City overcame struggling Middlesbrough 1-0, Sunderland pulled further clear of trouble after beating 10-man Stoke City 2-0, and the game between Wigan Athletic and Fulham ended in a scoreless stalemate.

Rafa Benitez started the game at Portsmouth with the likes of Torres, Kuyt and Xabi Alonso on the bench, a plan which left his side twice behind.

All five goals came in the second half with David Nugent giving the hosts the lead with a low shot on 62 minutes.

Fabio Aurelio equalised with a powerful free-kick from inside the area but Hermann Hreidarsson restored Portsmouth's lead with a stooping header twelve minutes from time.

Benitez fortunately avoided blush by bringing on Kuyt (56') and Torres (76'), who contributed two decisive goals in dying minutes.

Celtics recover to sink Knicks at MSG

BEIJING, Feb. 8 -- The Boston Celtics regrouped quickly from a morale-sapping overtime loss to the Los Angeles Lakers to mount a fourth-quarter revival against the New York Knicks that secured a 110-100 road victory on Friday.

Ray Allen recorded 11 of his 22 points in the final quarter, where the Celtics outscored the Knicks 38-24 to pull away for their 13th win in 14 contests.

Paul Pierce led his team with 26 points as Boston (42-10) returned to the court less than 24 hours after losing 109-110 to a feisty Lakers team.

"It showed a degree of mental toughness tonight, it would've been easy to give in," Celtics coach Doc Rivers told reporters.

"We told them before the game it's going to be close and we have to make our run at the end.

"We hung around long enough to play basketball."

Elsewhere in the National Basketball Association, it was: Pacers 107, Magic 102; Hawks 102, Bobcats 97; Hornets 101, Raptors 92; Nuggets 124, Wizards 103; Suns 115, Warriors 105; Thunder 102, Trail Blazers 93; Jazz 111, Kings 107; and Clippers 126, Grizzlies 105.

In New York, Knicks forward Al Harrington led all scorers with 27 points while David Lee added 18 points and pulled in 18 rebounds at the end of an eventful week for New York (21-28).

Kobe Bryant scored 61 points for the Lakers on Monday, the most ever at Madison Square Garden, then Cleveland Cavaliers' LeBron James grabbed 52 points on Wednesday.

Both games ended in defeats but New York was hoping to erase those memories when it forged a 76-72 advantage through three quarters.

Allen, however, responded with six quick points early in the fourth and Boston went on a 13-3 run to grab a 101-89 lead with 2:34 remaining.

The Knicks had won six of seven before their latest three-game losing skid, including a 100-88 home victory over the Celtics in their previous meeting on January 4, and were hoping for a repeat performance of that triumph.

They started well enough with Harrington sparking New York early with 17 first-half points, including three three-pointers in the second quarter, before Boston's defense settled in and made things more difficult in the second half.

"We talked more, we switched and didn't allow (Harrington) to get open shots," Pierce said. "I think that's the key. When you give him space and allow him to hit open threes he's tough to guard."

Kevin Garnett had 15 points and 11 rebounds while point guard Rajon Rondo had 12 points and 10 assists for the Celtics, who are trying to avoid falling into a slump after losing to the Lakers.

The last time Boston fell to Los Angeles, 83-92 on Christmas Day, it offset a season-worst 2-7 run.

Rollins fails to catch Villegas

Ireland's Padraig Harrington hits out of the rough on the 13th fairway of the South Course at Torrey Pines in the second round of the Buick Invitational in San Diego on Friday.

BEIJING, Feb. 8 -- Colombia's Camilo Villegas benefited from a late bogey by American John Rollins to take a one-shot lead after Friday's second round at the Buick Invitational in San Diego.

On a cold day of wildly fluctuating weather at Torrey Pines, overnight pacesetter Villegas patiently ground out a two-under-par 70 for an 11-under total of 133.

Three ahead after the opening round, the 27-year-old mixed three birdies with a lone bogey on the South Course, the more difficult of the two layouts hosting the PGA Tour event.

A charging Rollins, who also played on the South, drew level with Villegas with one hole to play before finding the right rough off the tee and missing a five-foot putt for par.

Having covered his first 17 holes in nine-under, Rollins had to settle for a 64 and outright second place at 10-under.

San Diego native Charley Hoffman fired a seven-birdie 66 on the North Course to lie four strokes off the pace, one ahead of fellow Americans Paul Goydos (66) and Nick Watney (69).

John Rollin of the U.S. hits his second shot from among trees at the eighth hole during the fourth round of the Bob Hope Classic golf tournament in La Quinta, California January 20, 2007.

Villegas, seeking his third PGA Tour title, was happy with his round after a difficult day of intermittent rain and sunshine at the wind-swept coastal venue.

"I think I accomplished my goal," he told reporters after covering his last nine holes in level par.

"I looked at my caddie walking down the 10th fairway and it was just pouring. I told him: 'Listen, let's find a way to keep it around par and maybe somehow get it in the red numbers'.

"So I scrambled pretty good," added the muscular Colombian. "Two-under, I'm happy with it."

Rollins, who holed out from 124 yards with a nine-iron to eagle the par-four fifth, was delighted to surge into contention for a third PGA Tour title. "I just came out and made some putts," the 33-year-old said after totalling just 23 putts on the day.

"I made a couple of long ones that you don't really expect to make and just built on that as the round progressed.

"It just happened that things started going in," added Rollins, who won the most recent of his two PGA Tour titles at the 2006 BC Open.

Three-time winner Phil Mickelson carded a 72 on the North Course to lie nine shots off the pace, three ahead of Irish world No. 3 Padraig Harrington (74).

In Bangkok, Japan's Tesuji Hiratsuka continued his title charge at the Asian Tour International by battling to a four-under-par 67 yesterday to set up what would be an exciting finale to the season-opening event on the Asian Tour.

The 37-year-old Japanese takes a slender one-shot lead over Australia's Unho Park, heading into the final round at the Suwan Golf and Country Club today.

Park returned with a 66 for a 13-under 200 total and is two shots ahead of India's Rahil Gangjee and South African James Kamte, who are tied for third after posting matching 202s at the US$300,000 event.

Two-thirds of Chicago residents back hosting Olympic Games

CHICAGO, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Nearly two-thirds of Chicago residents want the city to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, but most don't want tax money to pay for it, according to a new poll conducted by the Chicago Tribune.

Yet many supporters as well as a vast majority of those opposed to bringing the Games here don't buy the idea that private funds will cover nearly all the costs.

Mayor Richard Daley's push for the Games was favored by 64 percent and opposed by 28 percent in the poll of registered voters from Chicago and the suburbs.

But 75 percent of all those surveyed said they were against the use of tax money to cover any financial shortfalls.

The international sporting event could boost the city's struggling economy, improve its international reputation and help fix a troubled public transportation system, those surveyed said.

Asked about the biggest potential disadvantages, they cited taxpayer costs, congestion and security threats.

The survey of 350 people, conducted Wednesday through Thursday, has an error margin of 5.2 percentage points.

The poll comes a week before Chicago and its rivals -- Tokyo, Madrid and Rio de Janeiro -- must submit formal bids to the International Olympic Committee in Switzerland. The bids are due Thursday and international officials will choose a winner in October.

Before selecting a city to host the Games, the IOC wants assurances residents like the idea. The bids ask for evidence of popular support, including any poll and referendum results.

Beckham desires to stay at AC Milan

AC Milan's David Beckham celebrates after scoring against Bologna during their Italian Serie A soccer match at the Dall'Ara stadium in Bologna January 25, 2009.

BEIJING, Feb. 5 (Xinhuanet) -- David Beckham wants to make his stay at AC Milan permanent and leave the Los Angeles Galaxy after his three-month loan ends on March 8 in order to remain in contention for England at the 2010 World Cup.

The English midfielder announced his intentions Wednesday after playing in Milan's 2-2 tie at Glasgow Rangers. Beckham has played well with the Italian club during his three-month loan.

"At the moment my lawyers are not talking to the Galaxy," Beckham said. "But I have expressed my desire to stay at AC Milan now, and it's just down to Milan and Galaxy to come to an agreement."

"I have enjoyed my time here," he added.

Milan vice president Adriano Galliani and coach Carlo Ancelotti have made clear they would love to prize Beckham away from a 32.5 million U.S. dollars Major League Soccer (MLS) contract that has around three years remaining. The Galaxy had no immediate comment.

"At this point it's out of my hands," the 33-year-old soccer star said. "I've said what my feelings are to both clubs."

Since coming to Italy, Beckham has scored twice and helped to lift Milan to second place in the Serie A standings.

"At the moment I'm still a Galaxy player," he said. "I respect the Galaxy and everything they have done for me. They have always been great to me."

Beckham wants to maintain his place on the England national team and play at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. He once said playing in Italy would allow him to stay in shape before joining AC Milan.

"To be given the chance again to play at this level at my age is pretty incredible and I've enjoyed it so much I would like to continue it," he said. "I think people have seen the way I've been since playing at this level again."

"It's nothing against the MLS and the football over there because it's a game that will grow, but it will take quite a few years," he added. "I'm still confident that will happen eventually, but I want to have a chance of being involved in 2010 and I believe my best chance of doing so is to remain here."

Beckham intends to quit LA Galaxy

LONDON, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- David Beckham expressed his will to quit Los Angeles Galaxy and to seek a permanent move to AC Milan for the first time in Glasgow on Wednesday.

The 33-year-old soccer icon, who has scored two goals in his first five starts in Serie A on loan with AC Milan, valued his stay in Milan a chance to impress himself for one more World Cup with England in South Africa next year.

"I have expressed my desire now to stay in Milan and hopefully the clubs can come to some agreement," said the former England captain after a friendly between Rangers and Milan at Ibrox.

"My main objective is to stay at this club and I enjoy playing here and at the highest level and it would give me more of a chance," he added.

Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani has said he wants Beckham to stay, while the club have not yet made an offer for the former Manchester United and Real Madrid player.

Beckham's lawyers were discussing with Galaxy the possibility of extending his loan spell, due to end on March 9.

S Korean football team draws 2-2 in friendly with Bahrain

SEOUL, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's national football team marked another draw of 2-2 in a friendly with Bahrain in Dubai on late Wednesday after drawing with Syria on Sunday.

Bahrain, who stands 89th in the FIFA rankings, made the first goal with a penalty in the second half, soon to be caught up with South Korean striker Kim Jung-woo's goal. In the final minutes, both teams scored again to end the game in a 2-2 tie.

"We scored two goals, it's a good point. And our performance in the first half was satisfactory," South Korean coach Huh Jung-moo said after the game. "We gave them too many decisive chances as we made mistakes in defense and lost focus. We must not repeat this against Iran."

Kim, who scored South Korea's first goal against Bahrain, said his team "improved a lot from the previous game against Syria. We will show a better performance against Iran."

The South Korean football team, 42nd rank in the FIFA standings, had a week-long training session in the United Arab Emirates, which included two friendlies with Syria and Bahrain. The disappointing match against Bahrain follows a 1-1 draw in a friendly with Syria on Sunday.

The South Korean squad will head to Tehran on Thursday for the Asian qualifier against Iran, which is held next week.

The team is expected to make an improvement in the upcoming match as the nation's star players, such as Park Ji-sung and Lee Young-pyo, join them from European clubs.

Iran says no visa for U.S women badminton team due to late application

TEHRAN, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- Iran said on Wednesday that it has issued no visa for a U.S. women badminton team for a Tehran tournament due to its late application, the state TV IRIB reported on its website.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hassan Qashqavi made the remarks in his weekly press conference in Tehran, referring to the lack of enough time to process "the visas" for the team which was to compete in the Iran Fajr International Badminton Tournament to be opened on Friday.

"The process of visa issuance takes long time, (therefore) the U.S. (women) badminton team could not attend the competitions," the spokesman was quoted as saying.

The U.S. badminton team, including eight female players and four coaches and managers, had been expected to arrive in Tehran around noon Wednesday from Dubai.

Earlier on Monday, the U.S. State Department said in a statement that the country would send its women's badminton team to Iran from Tuesday to next Monday at the invitation of the Iranian Badminton Federation.

"This visit is part of our people-to-people exchanges with Iran," the department statement said, adding that the U.S. side looks forward to hosting the Iranian Badminton Federation for the U.S. Open in July.

According to the department, it "has included Iranians in a range of educational, professional, and cultural exchange programs" since 2006.

"In the past two years, over 250 Iranians, including artists, athletes, and medical professionals, have participated in exchange programs in the United States."

The badminton visit could have been the first step taken by the new U.S. administration of President Barack Obama on its relationship with Tehran, which has vowed to utilize all the tools of the so-called smart power to "reach out to both friends and adversaries."

The United States severed its ties with Iran in 1980. Since then, Washington has been trying to beef up its sanctions against Tehran for allegedly developing secretly nuclear weapons and for being involved in anti-U.S. coalition forces' activities in Iraq.

Volleyball star Giba close to returning to play in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- Arguably one of the best active male volleyball players in the world, Giba announced on Wednesday his intentions to return to play in Brazil.

The member of the Brazilian men's national volleyball team currently acts for the Russian team, Iskra Odisntovo. However, with his contract set to expire, he has his eyes set on home.

After having spent the last eight years outside of Brazil playing professional volleyball, Giba is ready to return. The athlete maintains constant contact with the Brazilian team, Cimed. Negotiations are going along just fine as reportedly.

Giba has a year left remaining on his contract. Nevertheless, he has openly expressed his desire to return to Brazil. In 2008, the player attempted to negotiate an early exit from his contract, but the Russian team was able to keep him on board. The high fines of breaching his contract deterred the player from leaving.

However, in 2009, the Russian club recognizes that it will be difficult to hang on to him for too much longer.

The athlete's return to Brazil is almost certain. The only thing remaining is a date. His departure date from Iskra Odisntovo will depend on negotiations with Cimed, who may be able to cover the fines and bring Giba back to the hardwood floor in Brazil before the year's end.

Ladies event to be the highlight of Four Continents

VANCOUVER, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- With defending world champion Mao Asada of Japan, her rival Kim Yu-Na of South Korea and Canada's five-time champion Joannie Rochette, ladies event will surely become the highlight of the ISU Four Continents, which starts Wednesday in Vancouver.

One of the exciting moments of the competition will be to see Mao Asada, and rival Yu-Na Kim of South Korea, a two-time world bronze medallist, go head to head.

In their last meeting at the Grand Prix Final, Asada took the gold in a show of steely determination. Now it may be Kim's turn to take the title in Vancouver with her mesmerizing musicality, grace and superb technicality.

That said, the only woman so far this season to skate a clean free program is Canada's five-time champion, Joannie Rochette, who has the skills and the ability to be a real threat in this competition.

All five skaters able to take the top spot will be at the men's event. Newly-crowned American men's champion Jeremy Abbott has been unstoppable this season and has to be one of the heavy favorites, especially after his winning performance at the ISU Grand Prix Final.

Japan's Takahiko Kozuka, silver medallist at the Grand Prix Final, will undoubtedly be in the mix as will teammate, Nobunari Oda.

Despite his fifth-place finish at the Grand Prix Final, Canada's two-time national champion, Patrick Chan, is fresh from a dazzling Canadian championship where his short program would have been hard to beat by anyone on the current world scene.

In ice dance, there are Canada's Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, the defending world silver medallists, America's Meryl Davis and Charlie White, Canada's Jessica Dube and Bryce Davison, the defending world bronze medallists, and Zhang Dan and Zhang Hao of China, the defending world silver medallists.

Competition will conclude Saturday with the men's free skate.

Staged at the Pacific Coliseum, the event is one of several "test events" for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, as the city prepares to launch the one-year countdown to the Games on Feb. 12.

Pereira's stay in the U.S. will be much shorter than Olympic champion, Cielo's. Critics have called Cielo's presence in the US a type of "exile" due to his long stays abroad.

Pereira intends on staying until the World Championships of swimming take place in Rome on July 19 through August 2.

"My goal is to spend some time abroad and gain some experience. I hope to get some good workouts and even participate along side some of the top swimmers of the US," said Pereira, who made his name at the 2007 Pan-American games held in Rio de Janeiro.

"I may even compete with Michael Phelps, that is if he participates in any events this year.

"One thing is for sure, I don't want to be away from Brazil for too long. Here, I have my club and my coach.

"The only problem is that there aren't enough competitions. In the US, there are swim meets every week with top-name athletes," said Pereira.

The athlete had attempted to train abroad when he was 16 year-old, but ended up returning just six months later due to homesickness. Pereira has not yet defined exactly where he will train.

Hurdler Liu well on road to recovery, says coach

Feb. 5 -- Chinese hurdler Liu Xiang is expected to return to Shanghai as early as next month as his recovery from the foot injury that forced him out of the Beijing Olympics has been much better than expected, according to his coach.

Sun Haiping, the coach of the star hurdler, landed in the United States February 4 with two sandbags and two special rubber bands to help the athlete, who is undergoing rehabilitation there, hasten his recovery training.

The sandbags and bands will be used to step up strength training of Liu's legs, Sun revealed.

Liu, the 2004 Olympic champion and former world-record holder in the 110-meter hurdles, hopefully will be able to wear his spike shoes again next month, Sun said.

The most successful Chinese sprinter now has only two chairs at his rental apartment as tools for some basic strength training, Shanghai Oriental Morning Posted cited Sun as saying.

The 26-year-old Shanghai native started jogging on the treadmill last week, nearly two months after undergoing ankle surgery at Houston's Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center on December 5.

Doctors removed four small pieces of bone from the Achilles' tendon of his right foot during the hour-long operation, Liu's first.

The injury happened over a period of time, resulting in microscopic tearing of the tendon's fibers, which caused bleeding. The process produced calcium and resulted in the bone pieces forming within the tendon, according to Dr. Thomas Clanton, who performed the operation.

Clanton also operated on NBA all-star Yao Ming for a stress fracture in his left foot earlier last year.

Clanton said Liu would recover fully in six months and could compete again at the level he was before his injury.

However, Sun said he could not predict whether Liu would be able to be back to competitive form in time for the August 15-23 world championships.

"The tendon was a key part in his running and I will not be sure of his fully recovered until he gets on his spikes and hits the track again."

Federal judge unseals evidence against Barry Bonds

Feb. 5 (Xinhuanet) -- A federal judge in San Francisco released hundreds of pages of court documents against former Giants slugger Barry Bonds in his perjury trial that is slated to begin on March 2, according to U.S. media report Thursday.

Former San Francisco Giants left fielder Barry Bonds leaves a federal courthouse after a hearing before his perjury trial in San Francisco, California December 21, 2007.

A hearing is set for Thursday in the San Francisco court, and District Judge Susan Illston is to determine what evidence will be admitted at the trial.

The long lists included that Bonds, the most prolific home run hitter in baseball history, was accused of lying about the use of performance-enhancing drugs before a grand jury investigating the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative in sworn testimony on Dec. 4, 2003.

Also included in the released documents is a transcript of a taped conversation between Bonds’s former trainer, Greg Anderson, and his former business manager, Stevie Hoskins, discussing injecting Bonds with performance-enhancing drugs.

Many of current and former major leaguers received injection along with Bond, including Jason Giambi, who are scheduled to testify for the government during Bonds' upcoming trial.

The documents also alleged that Bonds tested positive in 2000 and 2001 for the steroids methenelone and nandrolone.

A government-retained scientist said he found evidence that Bonds used the designer steroid THG upon retesting a urine sample, which was seized in a government raid in 2004.

Phelps: "I'll have to grow from the mistakes"

BEIJING, Feb. 5 (Xinhuanet) -- Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps publicly addressed the photo scandal after issuing an apology Sunday about his smoking from a marijuana pipe, media reported Thurdsay.

U.S. Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps listens to a question during an interview at Yingdong Swimming Pool in Beijing Jan. 13, 2009, during filming for a television commercial for Mazda.

The 23-year-old Olympic star said he had learned from the mistakes he had made and would have to live with and grow from them after a photo in a British tabloid exposed that he was inhaling from a marijuana pipe.

"It's obviously something I'm not proud of at all," Phelps said.

He called swimming the thing he loves and cares most.

"To be able to get back in the water and get back to a normal schedule is what I am happy about most," Phelps was quoted as saying.

On Wednesday in Switzerland, the swimming's governing body FINA praised Phelps for his public apology.

"As a citizen, Michael Phelps displayed inappropriate behavior," FINA said in a statement. "But his sincere regret and the promise that such a situation will not happen again are sufficient guarantees that this great star will continue generating respect and appreciation to all fans of our sport around the globe."

But the CEO of the U.S. Olympic Committee said Wednesday he'd like to have a face-to-face meeting with Phelps.

Steelers plan offseason revamp

BEIJING, Feb. 4 -- The Pittsburgh Steelers will be revamped and bringing in fresh faces as it aims to follow up a record Super Bowl win next season, head coach Mike Tomlin said on Monday.

Change, even for a team like the Steelers, is the only way ahead in today's NFL.

Santonio Holmes hauled in a six-yard touchdown pass from Ben Roethlisberger with 35 seconds left to lead the Steelers to a dramatic 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII on Sunday in Florida.

The triumph was a record sixth Super Bowl victory for the Steelers and the second in four years. Pittsburgh now has one more Super Bowl triumph than the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers.

Pittsburgh will undoubtedly lose some players to free agency although key performers, like Roethlisberger and Holmes, will be returning for another shot at the title, Tomlin suggested.

"A lot of the faces will be the same but nothing stays the same in this game. A few will come and go. Those that remain, the roles will change," he said.

"When I walk down the hallway and look at the championships of the Steelers of the 70s it's the same faces in the same positions on those photos. That's not the reality today.

"We're going to roll up our sleeves at the appropriate time and start with a new group of men ... and go about the business of trying to put ourselves in position to compete in '09."

Tomlin, however, said even if his team won the Super Bowl again in 2010 he would not consider it two titles in a row.

"For me, and the thing that I'm going to sell to our football team, is that we're not attempting to repeat," Tomlin said after Sunday's thrilling victory over Arizona.
