Hamburg win northern derby 2-1 against Bremen

BERLIN, Dec. 20 -- In a rough match with many fouls, 10-men Hamburg defeated Bremen 2-1 at HSH Nordbank Arena at German Bundesliga on Sunday.

Hamburg climbed from fifth to fourth position while Bremen slipped from fourth to sixth at the outcome of the northern German Bundesliga derby.

From the start Hamburg took over control while Bremen needed some time to fit into match. Hamburg defender Joris Mathijsen gave his squad an early lead. Mathijsen headed home a corner at the 9th minute.

With 32 minutes played, Hamburg defender Jerome Boateng was sent off with a straight red card after he committed a harsh foul against Werder midfielder Marko Marin.

Hamburg wasn't shocked and doubled the lead at the 36th minute. Defender Marcell Jansen slotted home from 26 meter into open goal.

 Werder defender Naldo contributed consolation goal at injury time, but Werder were unable to turn around.

In another match, new boys Nuernberg lost 3-0 to Cologne.
