10 immigrants dead after boat sinks off Florida

U.S. Coast Guard crews pulled 17 survivors and nine bodies from the Atlantic Ocean on Wednesday, hours after a boat believed to be carrying illegal Haitian migrants sank off the Florida coast.

HOUSTON, May 13 -- Ten immigrants are dead and 17 rescued on Wednesday after an overloaded boat carrying immigrants sank off the coast of the southern U.S. state of Florida, local media reported.

The search for survivals is underway and local officials say they do not know exactly how many people were aboard the boat, said Coast Guard Captain James Fitton, quoted by the reports.

Fitton believed around 30 were dumped into the sea.

The boat "apparently left Bimini in the Bahamas" on Tuesday night and "apparently" carrying immigrants of Haiti, the reports added.
