Gallas stripped of Arsenal captaincy

LONDON, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- William Gallas' future at Arsenal has been thrown into doubt following reports from France that he has been stripped of the captaincy and dropped for the trip to Manchester City.

The 31-year-old centre-back has revealed rifts in the Gunners dressing room, a blazing row during the interval of the 4-4 draw with rivals Tottenham and a problem with an unnamed team-mate unsettling Arsene Wenger's squad.

Wenger had to decide whether to give Gallas the armband at Eastlands, with the website of respected magazine France Football this evening suggesting the defender has lost it and is not traveling for the City clash, the English Press Association said.

Manuel Almunia and Gael Clichy have been billed as alternatives this weekend, as Cesc Fabregas is suspended and Kolo Toure injured.

Former Arsenal full-back Nigel Winterburn believes changing the captaincy would place Gallas' future in doubt.

"If he takes the captaincy away he's almost saying he doesn't trust him as a player and then maybe he shouldn't be playing within the team," said Winterburn on Sky Sports News.

"It shows how disappointed Arsene Wenger is. He must be seriously hurt to take the captaincy away. If he does not travel it could be the end of him at Arsenal."

Gallas has been quoted in the Evening Standard as being open to an eventual return to France for the final stages of his career, which adds fuel to questions of his long-term commitment to Arsenal.

He said: "It's true that I'd like to return to France for one or perhaps two seasons to finish my career."

Breda draw with Nijmegen to top Dutch premier league table

BRUSSELS, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- NAC Breda were forced to a 1-1 draw by visitors NEC Nijmegen Saturday night to move to the top of the Dutch premier league table temporarily, while defending champions PSV Eindhoven regained composure to whitewash Heracles 4-0 to halt their two-match losing streak.

In Breda, the hosts found themselves a goal down after 27 minutes into the match when Lass Shone opened the scoring for the visitors. Nine minutes into the second half, midfielder Edwin De Graaf equalized for Breda.

The draw put Breda one point ahead of archrivals Ajax, who are scheduled to play on Sunday against tough AZ Alkmaar. Ajax can overtake Breda with a draw or win.

In Eindhoven, the defending champions, who were desperate to win a match to regain confidence, took advantage of a weak opponent in Heracles, scoring all the four goals in the first half.

Rodriguez Francisco opened the account at the 15th minute, followed by goals by Ibrahim Afelley at the 29th, Danko Lazovic at the 32nd and Balazs Dzsudzsak at the 38th minute respectively.

With the win, PSV rose to 5th on the league table, and halted a two-match losing streak.

Bayern beat Cottbus to stay on course for championship

BERLIN, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Reigning Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich beat bottom team Cottbus 4-1 on Saturday, keeping alive their hopes of leading the championship into the winter break.

In face of 69,000 audience at the Allianz Arena, Ervin Skela gave Cottbus an unexpected lead after 25 minutes, but Bayern dictated play from the start.

French international Franck Ribery, Martin Demichelis, Miroslav Klose and Italian striker Luca Toni scored four goals to seal the sweep victory.

Despite scoring four, they missed more chances than they converted. They also had a 14th minute goal disallowed for offside.

After 25 minutes with little to offer, Cottbus strayed close to the Bayern penalty area and won a free kick.

Skrela lofted the ball into the penalty area. Massimo Odo leapt up without touching the ball which beat keeper Michael Rensing - 0-1.

Just four minutes later, Bayern were back on level terms after a dream free kick from Franck Ribery which soared into the top left corner from 20 meters out.

When Cottbus keeper Gerhard Tremmel delayed coming out of his goal, Demichelis was able to nod home a cross from Oddo to put Bayern ahead.

After the interval, a one-two with Phillipp Lahm set Ribery free to send in a perfect cross which gave Miroslav Klose his fifth goal of the season.

Bayern continued to press - above all Toni - and it was his speedy reaction just five meters out after a corner from Oddo that gave Bayern a deserved fourth goal.

With 28 points in hand, Bayern remain third in the Bundesliga standings on 28 points from 14 games, but are now level on points with second-placed Lever kusen and just three points off leaders Hoffenheim.

Village club return to Bundesliga summit

BERLIN, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- German village club Hoffenheim returned to the top of Bundesliga standings thanks to their first-ever win against Koeln on Saturday, while defending champion Bayern started to cast their eyes on championship after sweeping Cottbus 4-1.

Hoffenheim, a newly-elevated club that had dominated German top league regularly this season, ran out 3-1 winners in Koeln on Saturday.

Hoffenheim are now three points ahead of Leverkusen and Bayern to take the first place of the standings.

Hoffenheim had started the match the better side, with Matthias Jaissle and Sejad Salihovic going close.

The host grew stronger as the match progressed, and Milivoje Novakovic was unlucky not to open the scoring after 26 minutes when his shot hit the post.

Hoffenheim were more clinical, and Demba Ba opened the scoring with his seventh goal of the seasons just six minutes later.

The second half started even more colorful as referee Deniz Aytekin sent off two players inside just three minutes.

Koeln's Kevin McKenna was shown a straight red for a nasty tackling against Salihovic, Hoffenheim's Luis Gustavo picked up his second booking soon after.

The ten men from Hoffenheim doubled their advantage midway through the second half when goalgetter Vedad Ibisevic scored a typical poacher's goal.

Petit pulled one back for Koeln in the 78th minute, but Ibisevic made sure of the win for Hoffenheim with his 16th goal ofthe season two minutes from time.

Billups leads in-form Nuggets to win over Spurs

The Nuggets have won seven of eight games since acquiring Billups in a trade with the Detroit Pistons two weeks ago.

Billups, an All-Star and NBA champion, dished out six assists and Carmelo Anthony added 21 points and nine rebounds as Denver (8-4) snapped a three-game win streak for the Spurs (5-6).

Filling the distribution role Denver lacked with the attack-minded Allen Iverson, Billups has been the perfect fit for the Nuggets averaging 18.7 points and 5.8 assists since joining the team.

He scored seven points during an 11-1 run in the third quarter which gave the Nuggets a commanding 75-54 advantage over the Spurs.

Playing without injured guards Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili, San Antonio struggled to 38 percent shooting from the field including just 2-for-17 from the 3-point line.

Rookie point guard George Hill led the Spurs with 20 points and Tim Duncan was held to 12 points and 11 rebounds.

James wants release from Cards

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Benched running back Edgerrin James wants the Arizona Cardinals to release him, his agent said Wednesday night.

Cardinals general manager Rod Graves said the team declined to even consider such a move.

Agent Drew Rosenhaus said he would continue to talk to the Cardinals to try to persuade them to grant James his release.

"The reason is simple. Edgerrin is healthy, he's still in his prime and we know he can still play at the highest level" Rosenhaus said. "Quite frankly, he's not used to being a bench warmer and not playing and would like to go to a team where he can play."

Graves said he received a call from Rosenhaus three weeks ago after James was benched in favor of rookie Tim Hightower and didn't play a down in Arizona's 34-13 victory at St. Louis.

According to Graves, Rosenhaus asked if the team would consider releasing James "and we declined it as a consideration."

"I explained to him that we still saw Edgerrin as a valuable member of our football team," Graves said.

Rosenhaus says he asked for James' release, but Graves said, "I don't know that it was that strong."

James has three carries for 5 yards since losing his starting job.

Rosenhaus said that "there are a number of teams that we believe he would be able to contribute to and play certainly much more than he's been playing with the Cardinals."

The Cardinals, on the brink of their first division title in 33 years, want to have James on hand should Hightower get injured. The team’s other running back, J.J. Arrington, is not considered an every-down player.

Releasing James, Graves said, "didn't make sense on several fronts."

Graves said he has talked to James since Rosenhaus' call.

"He said he was still fully committed to this team and he would not be a distraction," Graves said. "He's been doing everything we asked him to do."

But Rosenhaus said James still wants to be released.

"We'll continue to talk to the team," the agent said, "and hopefully encourage them to take that step and give a player of his stature and contribution to the team the respect and grant his wish."

The 30-year-old James is in his 10th NFL season, third with Arizona. He has topped 1,000 yards each of the past five seasons. He ranks first among active players and 13th overall with 11,992 yards gained. James has 385 yards in 111 carries this season with three touchdowns.

After inflicting the Los Angeles Lakers first loss of the season on Friday, the Pistons proved too good for a Cleveland team that came into the game having won eight straight.

Iverson had 23 points, leading a fourth-quarter surge that sealed the game and moved Detroit within half a game of the Cavaliers, who lead the Central Division. Nuggets 91, Spurs 81.

In San Antonio, Chauncey Billups scored 22 points, leading Denver's victory over injury-riddled San Antonio.

Carmelo Anthony added 21 for the Nuggets, who have a 7-1 record since Billups arrived in the trade that sent Iverson to Detroit.

The result maintained Denver's co-leadership of the Northwest Division, and snapped the Spurs' three-game winning streak. Jazz 105, Bucks 94.

In Salt Lake City, Utah stayed undefeated at home and extended their mastery of Milwaukee to eight straight games.

C.J. Miles scored a season-high 25 points for the Jazz. and Carlos Boozer added 20 points and 11 rebounds before leaving because of a strained quadriceps.

Utah kept pace with Denver as leaders of the Northwest. Raptors 101, Heat 95.

In Miami, Toronto gave up most of a big lead but held on to beat a Miami team led by a stellar Dwayne Wade performance.

Andrea Bargnani scored a season-high 25 points and Jermaine O'Neal added 16 points and 17 rebounds for the Raptors.

Wade finished with season highs of 40 points and 11 assists, plus added a career-best five blocks. Since blocks became an official stat, the only other player to have a 40-10-5 effort was Alvan Adams of Phoenix in 1977, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Toronto squandered much of a 17-point, late-third-quarter lead but ultimately scrambled to beat Miami for the second time in four days. Trail Blazers 116, Bulls 74.

In Portland, Oregon, the hosts built a 30-point lead in the first half and went on to trounce Chicago.

Greg Oden had 11 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in his home debut. Oden, sidelined all of last season by a knee injury after being the top draft pick, entered the game to a standing ovation in the first quarter and dunked seconds later. The 7-footer had his third double-double in four games after missing six of Portland's first seven games this season because of foot injury. Mavericks 96, Rockets 86.

In Houston, Dallas notched its third straight win over its Texas rival Houston.

Jason Terry scored 31 points and Dirk Nowitzki added 24 points and 12 rebounds for the Mavericks. Kings 105, Hornets 96.

In New Orleans, John Salmons scored 29 points to lead Sacramento over New Orleans.

Bobby Jackson had all eight of his points in the final 5:10 for the Kings. Hawks 91, Wizards 87.

In Atlanta, Marvin Williams hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 26 seconds left as Atlanta snapped a four-game losing streak by downing Washington. Timberwolves 102, 76ers 96.

In Minneapolis, Minnesota ended an eight-game losing skid by defeating Philadelphia.

Al Jefferson scored six of his 25 points in the final 3-1/2 to shore up fivctory for the Timberwolves, who won for the first time since their opening game of the season. Clippers 108, Thunder 88.

In Oklahoma City, Los Angeles put together a 23-4 run during the third quarter to overwhelm struggling Oklahoma City.

Cuttino Mobley scored 12 of his season-high 23 points during that burst, and added a career-high seven steals.

Nadal's absence takes shine off Davis final

BUENOS AIRES: The absence of world No 1 Rafael Nadal has taken the shine off the Davis Cup final and left Argentina as firm favourites to beat Spain and win the trophy for the first time.

Argentina's tennis team player David Nalbandian plays a shot during a training session ahead of the Davis Cup World Group final match against Spain in Mar del Plata,November 19, 2008. [Agencies]

Unbeaten at home for 10 years, Argentina now have higher-ranked players in their favor as well as the playing surface and a partisan crowd.

Nadal pulled out last week after failing to recover from tendonitis in his right knee and blamed his injury on an overloaded tennis calendar.

His withdrawal produced mixed feelings in the home camp.

"I regret that he's not coming, because all the Argentines wanted to see him, but it's also right to say that all Argentines want us to be Davis Cup champions," said Argentina captain Alberto Mancini.

"In that sense, it's good news because our chances have got better."

Argentina, taking part in their third final and at home for the first time, have chosen to stage the game on an indoor surface at the Islas Malvinas arena in the resort of Mar del Plata.

Their usual venue is the larger Parque Roca in Buenos Aires but the clay surface is also preferred by the Spaniards.

The choice of venue turned into a political battle with several other cities hoping to stage the prestigious event and politicians jumping on the bandwagon.

Despite Nadal's absence, it has been almost impossible for the general public to buy tickets at the 11,000 capacity arena with only 300 sold at the venue and another 1,500 over the Internet.

The rest have gone to members of the Argentina Tennis Association (AAT) and sponsors.

Although Mar del Plata is a major resort, hotels have doubled their prices and many said they were sold out two months ago.

David Nalbandian, Argentina's most experienced player, publicly criticised the decision to prefer Mar del Plata over his native Cordoba.

Argentina's challenge will be led by Juan Martin del Potro who has enjoyed a meteoric rise this year, winning four ATP titles in a row on his way into the top ten.

Ranked ninth, he also won the fifth and decisive rubber in the semifinal against Russia, destroying Igor Andreev in straight sets.

Nalbandian is two places below in the rankings.

David Ferrer, ranked 12, will lead the Spanish challenge as they attempt to add to their wins in 2000 and 2004.

"It's disappointing Nadal cannot be with us but we shouldn't talk about him any more from now on," said Spain captain Emilio Sanchez Vicario.

Marcel Granollers, ranked 56th in the world, has taken Nadal's place.

Maradona secures debut win

BRUSSELS - Diego Maradona enjoyed a winning start as Argentina coach with victory over Scotland on Wednesday while Marcello Lippi equalled a world record in charge of Italy.

In this combo of images Argentina's coach Diego Maradona reacts during a press conference in Glasgow, Scotland, Tuesday Nov. 18, 2008 ahead of an international friendly soccer match against Scotland on Wednesday.[Agencies]

Among the pick of the other friendlies in Europe, a late header from captain John Terry earned England a 2-1 win against old foes Germany, European champions Spain swept Chile aside 3-0 and Robin van Persie's brace helped the Netherlands beat Sweden 3-1.

Elsewhere, World Cup runners-up France were held scoreless at home to Uruguay and in the only World Cup qualifier on Wednesday, the Czech Republic got their bid to reach the finals in South Africa back on track with a 3-0 over lowly San Marino.

Maradona waited just eight minutes for his first goal in charge of Argentina when Maxi Rodriguez rounded off a slick, defence-splitting move which echoed moves orchestrated by his new boss when he captained the South Americans to victory at the 1986 World Cup.

Scotland regrouped and threatened to spoil Maradona's party, but their best efforts were denied by Argentina goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo and some desperate defending.

"Argentina had 25 brilliant minutes at the beginning and couldn't put away more chances. It was a totally fair result," Maradona told a news conference.

"We gave the ball away later on but Scotland were unable to profit from that...We could have had the ball more and won by more," added Maradona, who scored his first Argentina goal as an 18-year-old at Hampden in a 3-1 win over the Scots in 1979.

WORLD RECORD

Italy coach Lippi equalled the world record of 31 successive international games without defeat after Luca Toni equalised in the 54th minute to secure a 1-1 draw for the world champions against Greece who led through Fanis Gekas four minutes earlier.

The draw in Athens took Lippi - in his second stint with Italy - level with Javier Clemente of Spain and Alfio Basile of Argentina and also saw him beat the Italian record of 30 set by Vittorio Pozzo between 1935 and 1939.

Despite gifting Germany an equaliser, England skipper Terry made amends with a header six minutes from time to secure a 2-1 win over Germany in Berlin and give coach Fabio Capello his fifth successive win.

England took the lead midway through the first half when German goalkeeper Rene Adler missed an attempted punch from a corner, leaving defender Matthew Upson to prod the ball home.

But after the break Terry chose to shepherd the ball back toward England's replacement keeper Scott Carson, who hesitated and allowed Patrick Helmes to nip in and help himself to an equaliser.

'BETTER TEAM'

"It shows the strength in depth of the squad, which is vital. You're not always going to have everyone available." said Capello, who was missing experienced players like Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney, Frank Lampard and David Beckham.

Germany coach Joachim Loew, who was also without key players, admitted England "were the better team" in his side's first defeat since losing to Spain in the final of Euro 2008.

The Spanish continued their good form since becoming European champions with a convincing 3-0 win at home to Chile.

David Villa's penalty, a neat finish by Fernando Torres and Santi Cazorla's deflected shot leaves Spain unbeaten in 28 games and top of FIFA's world rankings.

"I was very happy with today's match," Torres, who is just back from injury, said in a television interview. "The team is playing well and winning."

Elsewhere, Van Persie scored twice and Dirk Kuyt added a third as the Dutch ran out easy 3-1 winners against Sweden who netted through Kim Kallstrom, but there was disappointment for France who were held scoreless by Uruguay in Paris.

"It was a bit better in the second half ... we put more rhythm into the match. We did not concede a goal, that's a good point," France coach Raymond Domenech told reporters.

Three second-half goals in quick succession from Radoslav Kovac, Zdenek Pospech and substitute Tomas Necid gave the Czech Republic a 3-0 win over San Marino.

The Czechs had won one, drawn one and lost one of their first three Group Three qualifiers, but now trail leaders Slovakia by two points.

Boca's Viatri accused of stealing hair spray

BUENOS AIRES: Boca Juniors striker Lucas Viatri, one of the revelations of the Argentine season, is to face court proceedings over allegations that he robbed a salon, his lawyer said on Tuesday.

Arturo Olcese told Reuters that Viatri, who allegedly stole a pair of scissors and hair spray along with his brother and a friend, has been accused of robbery aggravated by the possession of weapons.

Olcese denied the charges against Viatri, who has scored six goals for Boca in the Apertura championship including the winner in the derby against arch-rivals River Plate.

"There's no case against him, there's no evidence which incriminates him," Olcese told Reuters.

Viatri was held in custody for one month earlier this year during preliminary investigations and the judge has now ruled that he must face an oral trial before a panel of judges.

After being released, he was given his chance in the Boca first team following an injury to stalwart striker Martin Palermo.

Boca are third in the table, one point behind leading pair San Lorenzo and Tigre with four matches each to play.

"He was training at the time, that's the truth," said Viatri's agent Cristian Traverso. "He couldn't be in two places at once."

Terry atones to give England win over Germany

BERLIN - John Terry atoned for his part in a dreadful mix-up to score a late header and give England a 2-1 win over old rivals Germany in an enterprising friendly on Wednesday.

England's John Terry (R) embraces goalkeeper Scott Carson after defeating Germany in their international friendly soccer match at Olympiastadion in Berlin November 19, 2008.[Agencies]

England moved ahead midway through the first half at the Olympiastadion when German goalkeeper Rene Adler missed an attempted punch from a corner, leaving defender Matthew Upson to prod the ball home.

The visitors should have made it 2-0 when Darren Bent rounded substitute keeper Tim Wiese to be through on goal in the second half but the striker slipped and shot wide. Moments later the home side were level.

Terry chose to shepherd the ball back toward England's replacement keeper Scott Carson, who hesitated and allowed Patrick Helmes to nip in and help himself to an equaliser.

Captain Terry made amends when he headed in from a Stewart Downing free kick with six minutes to go.

"England weren't just a little better they were simply better," Germany coach Joachim Loew told German TV. "All in all we deserved to lose."

LACK OF CLASS

England were missing half a dozen or more of their best players, including Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney, while Germany were without Michael Ballack, Torsten Frings and Philipp Lahm and the lack of quality showed.

Italian coach Fabio Capello, who has re-energised England since his arrival, could at least be satisfied at seeing Gareth Barry and Michael Carrick control midfield in the first half, although there were few clear chances to show for it.

The second half was more even, with Germany seeing more of the ball after making a series of substitutions.

That allowed England to threaten on the break and, after the ridiculous equaliser, Shaun Wright-Phillips almost gave them the lead back when he cracked the post from outside the box.

"It wasn't Scotty's (Carson's) fault, it was mine," Terry told ITV in reference to the Germany goal. "I should have cleared it. It was my fault but I was glad to get on the score sheet and help win us the game."

Lippi equals world record with Italy

ATHENS -- Italy coach Marcello Lippi equalled the world record of 31 successive international games unbeaten as the world cup champions drew 1-1 with hosts Greece in Wednesday's friendly.

Luca Toni equalized in the 54th minute to secure the tie for Italy after Greece's Fanis Gekas helped the hosts lead four minutes earlier.

The draw in Athens took Lippi, who's in his second stint with Italy, level with Javier Clemente of Spain and Alfio Basile of Argentina on the unbeaten mark of their respective teams in charge.

It also saw Lippi beat the Italian record of 30 set by Vittorio Pozzo between 1935 and 1939.

Lippi's record covers the duration of Italy's World Cup winning campaign in Germany when he ran his first charge from 2004 to 2006.

He was reappointed this year after Italy's poor performance at the European Championships under Roberto Donadoni.

"The unbeaten streak in itself is meaningless without that important victory," commented Lippi.

Yao, McGrady fine after injury fears

HOUSTON: Injury concerns for Yao Ming, Tracy McGrady and Ron Artest of the Houston Rockets proved unfounded Tuesday as all three were likely to play Wednesday against Dallas.

McGrady suffered an injury to his surgically repaired left knee in the third quarter of Houston's 100-89 victory Monday over Oklahoma City while Yao and Artest each suffered ankle sprains in the game and missed Tuesday's practice.

An MRI exam that had been planned on McGrady's knee was called off and McGrady told the Houston Chronicle that he was hopeful of playing Wednesday.

"Tomorrow is not ruled out," McGrady told the newspaper. "I have to talk to coach and the trainers, maybe even monitor my minutes more. I could play. We just have to come out with some sort of solution."

Chinese superstar center Yao missed the workout to have an x-ray after concerns over the same foot that was broken last season to end that campaign prematurely.

"I'm fine," Yao told the Chronicle. "The x-ray told me I have no problem. I feel much better this morning. You will continue to see me. That's good news."

Mexican scholar: Latin America should learn from China

MEXICO CITY, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- China has accomplished unprecedented achievements during its 30 years of reform and opening-up, and Latin America should learn from its experience, a Mexican scholar says.

Enrique Dussel Peters, coordinator of the China/Mexico Studies Center at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, recalled his March trip to southern China's booming coastal city of Shenzhen during a recent interview with Xinhua

He said the city's glittering skyscrapers, wide streets and busy traffic left him with the illusion of wandering in Houston, a prosperous U.S. high-tech city. Dussel said Shenzhen, which was a desolate fishing town 30 years ago, is a prime example of fast-developing China over the past three decades.

The night view of Yiwu is seen in this picture taken on Oct. 19, 2008 in east China's Zhejiang Province. Thirty years ago, Yiwu was just a poor agricultural county. Under the reform and opening-up policy, Yiwu decided to adopt the development strategy of "Building the City by Prospering Commerce". After 26 years' development, Yiwu has become the national circulation center and international procurement base for petty commodities with the world's largest wholesale market. (Xinhua Photo)

During that period, China, after the devastating 10-year Cultural Revolution, has evolved from a root-and-branch backward country to one enjoying a high reputation in the world because of its eye-catching progress in foreign affairs, society and culture, and the economy.

Dussel said Latin America can learn from China's unique and valuable development model.

To be different from Latin American countries, he said, China has put more investment into scientific and technological innovation besides providing cheap labor for foreign companies and attracting overseas investments.

Products with the brand "Made in China" have included many high-tech fields such as electronics, digital information, telecommunications, autos, computer software and space technology, the scholar pointed out.

He said, for example, that Chinese autos have been more and more welcome in Mexico, Brazil, Chile and other countries in the region, but Latin America, a long-time manufacturing base for the European and U.S. auto industries, has yet to have an independent auto brand.

Dussel said China has not simply copied the development pattern of other Asian countries that did well earlier in economic development.

"Under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, China has walked ahead along an unparalleled development path," he added.

Many Latin American countries have reached the consensus that they should learn from China's experience and boost cooperation with the country, the scholar said.

The 34-year-old man said he has been ten weeks and expecting their second child in June, and the sperm comes from the same donor, according to CNN report.

When asked whether he considers himself gay when he met with Nancy -- his wife now, Thomas said they were a normal couple although perceived by others as lesbians.

"I lived my life as a woman at that point. Legally, I was female. But inside I still felt male. So the way other people perceived us, they saw us as a lesbian couple," Thomas said.

He said they could have normal kind of intercourse after reassignment surgery and hormone treatment.

The pregnant man said they have legal problems with their first baby's birth certificate.

"I filled it out as me father, Nancy mother, and they changed it last minute, and they put her as father and me as mother. And then they changed it again and put us as parents. We're not a same-sex marriage. We're legal man and wife," said Thomas.

Mentioning his first delivery, Thomas called it a life-changing experience.

Thomas and wife Nancy met 18 years ago and married after living nearly 12 years later. He underwent surgery but kept his female reproductive organs so he could have a family. They bought sperm from a donor when they decided to start a family.

Endeavour astronauts complete 1st of four spacewalks

WASHINGTON, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Two U.S. astronauts from the shuttle Endeavor partially cleaned and lubed a solar panel on the space station Tuesday during the first of four planned space walks.

Mission Specialists Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper and Steve Bowen stepped outside the orbital outpost at 1:09 p.m. EST (1809 GMT) and wrapped up their work at 8:01 p.m. EST.

The astronauts first replaced a depleted nitrogen tank and a device used to help coolants flow along the station truss during the excursion that lasted nearly seven hours. They also removed covers from the front of the Japanese Kibo module to prepare for the installation of the module's exposed facility during the next Endeavor mission in 2009.

The astronauts then began their main task -- inspecting, cleaning and lubricating the station's starboard solar array rotary joint (SARJ) -- or the right-side joint. The mechanism is a wagon-wheel-shaped joint on the station's truss that allows electricity-generating solar panels to rotate so that they can always collect as much sunlight as possible.

NASA ground controllers noticed last year that more power than normal was being required to rotate the starboard joint, and that the device was vibrating excessively.

During several space walks to inspect the joint, engineers narrowed the cause to insufficient lubrication.

The two astronauts began work on the problem by removing the joint's old bearings. They still have to clean metal shavings off the joint's surface, lubricate the device and install new bearings.

Altogether, the job will take four space walks. Stefanyshyn-Piper and Bowen replaced just a few of the 11 bearings on the gear during their first space walk.

Stefanyshyn-Piper reported that her tool bag unexpectedly floated away during the job. But NASA ground controllers believe the loss will not affect the next three space walks. "There is enough equipment for the space walkers to complete the planned SARJ assembly and cleaning," NASA said on its website.

The Endeavour arrived at the space station late Sunday. "This mission is all about home improvement," Commander Chris Ferguson said. "Home improvement inside and outside the station."

In addition to the outside work, the seven shuttle crew members and the three station residents will install a series of new facilities that will allow the station to house six residents by spring 2009. Outside, spacewalkers will service the starboard joint and also lubricate the left-side joint to prevent future problems.

Family history key in breast cancer risk

BEIJING, Nov. 19 -- Women with a family history of breast cancer but who test negative for two genetic mutations commonly linked to it still have a very high risk of developing the disease, Canadian researchers said on Monday.

These women are four times more likely to develop breast cancer than the average woman, translating to roughly a 40 percent lifetime risk of getting the disease, according to researchers led by Dr Steven Narod of the University of Toronto.

"I think we were surprised that it was that high. But certainly at that level of risk, one would think about preventive measures," said Narod, who presented the findings at a meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research.

Those measures may include magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, exams of the breast, considered a more sensitive screening test for breast tumors than a mammogram, Narod said. The women also may want to consider the drug tamoxifen as a preventive measure, Narod said.

The study involved 1,492 Canadian women with an average age of 48 who did not have mutations in either of two breast cancer susceptibility genes - BRCA1 and BRCA2.

The women came from families with a history of breast cancer - either two or more cases of breast cancer among close relatives under age 50 or at least three cases among close relatives of any age. Narod said it had been unclear exactly what risk breast cancer posed to women in these circumstances.

Most women who get genetic testing for the BRCA1 and BRCA2 are not found to have these abnormalities.

While BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations also are associated with a higher risk for ovarian cancer, the women in this study did not have a greater likelihood for that ailment.

Narod said the lifetime risk of breast cancer estimated for these women compared to the roughly 80 percent lifetime risk for women with the BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations.

Bahrain prince sues Michael Jackson in UK court

BEIJING, Nov. 19 -- A son of the king of Bahrain took U.S. pop star Michael Jackson to court on Monday for reneging on an agreement to record a new album and write an autobiography.

Bankim Thanki, the lawyer representing Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad al-Khalifa, told London's High Court that his client had made several payments to Jackson from 2005 onwards, including 35,000 U. S. dollars to pay utility bills at Jackson's Neverland Ranch.

The court heard that the following month, in April 2005, Jackson asked for one million dollars through an assistant, the Press Association reported.

"Sheikh Abdullah made many more payments on his behalf or to others," Thanki said.

"Sheikh Abdullah began to support Mr. Jackson financially after 2005 when it became clear that Mr. Jackson was in very serious financial difficulties, much to Sheikh Abdullah's surprise," Thanki added.

The early financial support coincided with Jackson's 2005 trial on child molestation charges. Despite his acquittal, the case left the 50-year-old performer's reputation and financial status in tatters.

Jackson spent time in Bahrain as a guest of the royal family following the trial, and in April 2006 a statement was released on behalf of Bahrain music label Two Seas Records announcing he would record a new album for release in 2007.

The sheikh is suing the pop legend for allegedly reneging on a 7-million-dollar "pay-back" agreement designed to repay money he advanced to Jackson during his financial troubles.

He said he and Jackson entered into a "combined rights agreement" under which the star was committed to a recording contract, an autobiography and a musical stage play.

But Jackson contests that there was no valid agreement and that the sheikh's case was based on "mistake, misrepresentation and undue influence."

In his pleaded defense, Jackson said the payments he received were "gifts" and that no project was ever finalized.

At the start of a court hearing set for up to 12 days, the judge heard that an application would be made for Jackson to give evidence via video link from Los Angeles.

Maradona brushes off Butcher snub

LONDON, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Diego Maradona Tuesday shrugged off Scotland assistant coach Terry Butcher's comments on his "Hand of God" goal ahead of Argentina's friendly at Scotland.

Butcher, former England captain, said he would never forgive the new Argentina boss for his infamous goal which helped knock England out of the 1986 World Cup.

Maradona, in Glasgow preparing for his first match in charge, raised his eyebrows when told of Butcher's stance but insisted he would not be distracted.

"No, I will not seek him out," he told a news conference through an interpreter.

"I don't understand why Butcher has this attitude. If people are fine with me I will greet them.

"I just don't understand why Butcher would take this attitude. Let Butcher get on with his own life and I'll get on with my life," Maradona said.

The football legend has received a warm welcome in Scotland but Butcher has suggested that he will not shake hands with the one of the game's greatest player on the touchline on Wednesday.

But Maradona retorted: "I'm not going to lose any sleep over it. If Butcher doesn't shake my hand, I'll still be alive tomorrow."

In the 1986 quarterfinal in Mexico, Maradona punched in his first goal before adding a splendid second for a 2-0 win against England.

But he went into self-defense by reminding England of Geoff Hurst's controversial second goal against West Germany in the 1966 World Cup final which England won 4-2.

"England won a World Cup with a goal that never crossed the line, " Maradona said.

"It was plain to everyone who saw it that it never went in, so I don't think it's fair that everyone should judge me when stuff like that went on."

Maradona scored his first international goal at Hampden in a 3-1 win at Hampden in 1979 and the Argentine great has fond memories of Glasgow.

"It's something that was very special to me. It was nice to start my international career and get my first goal here," he said.

"What I want to do in terms of repaying them(the fans) is hopefully put on a good spectacle tomorrow night.

"I feel great. I feel very good. It's a very, very proud moment for me to be heading up the Argentina national side."

U.S. treasury secretary reluctant to aid automakers

WASHINGTON, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson expressed his reservations Tuesday to use the 700 billion dollar rescue package to help struggling auto makers.

(Xinhua/Reuters Photo)

"We needed the financial rescue package so we could intervene, stabilize our financial system, and minimize further damage to our economy," Paulson told a hearing of the House Financial Services Committee.

"The rescue package was not intended to be an economic stimulus or an economic recovery package; it was intended to shore up the foundation of our economy by stabilizing the financial system," said the Treasury chief.

"And it is unrealistic to expect it to reverse the damage that had already been inflicted by the severity of the crisis," he added.

The president-elect Barak Obama and the Congress has been pressuring the Bush administration to use some of the financial rescue package to bailout the auto companies.

"Our industry ... needs a bridge to span the financial chasm that has opened up before us," General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner also told the Senate Banking Committee in prepared testimony on Tuesday.

Failure of the auto industry "would be catastrophic," he warned, resulting in three million jobs lost within the first year and "economic devastation (that) would far exceed the government support that our industry needs to weather the current crisis."

But Paulson said that while it would not be a good thing to let an automaker fail, the 700 billion dollar fund should not be used to prevent such a failure.

"I don't see this as the purpose" of the bailout program, which is intended to stabilize jittery financial markets and get lending flowing more freely again, which eventually should help revive the ailing economy, said the Treasury chief.

HAVANA, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao on Tuesday visited Fidel Castro, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, in Havana.

The two leaders warmly shook hands, exchanged greetings and had a long conversation in a sincere and friendly atmosphere.

Hu said he was delighted to see Castro again. The comrades of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China "have all cared about your health and I brought their sincere greetings to you," he said.

"I see in person that you have recovered and have been energetic so I feel very pleased," he told Castro.

Castro extended a warm welcome to Hu for his second state visit to Cuba. "We are old friends. I am happy to see that you are as energetic as when I met you last time," he said.

Hu said that as the founder of the Cuban socialist revolution and construction, Castro is dearly adored by the Cuban people. During the past half century, Castro led the heroic Cuban people in their fearless struggle to safeguard state sovereignty and adhere to the path of socialism, thus winning respect from people worldwide, including the Chinese people.

Hu said that Castro has followed closely his country's development, showed great concern about people's life and dedicated himself to profound reflections of major strategic issues, such as international affairs and national development.

"Your thoughts and experience will surely guide the Cuban people to continue their march on the road of socialist construction," he said.

On Sino-Cuban relations, Hu said relations between the two countries have withstood the changes of international situation thanks to the joint efforts to forge and nurture their bilateral ties by generations of Chinese leaders, including Mao Zedong, DengXiaoping and Jiang Zemin, and Castro and other Cuban leaders.

"The brotherly friendship between our two countries and two parties has been deeply rooted in the hearts of our two peoples," he said.

"The Chinese people will never forget that thanks to your concern and effort that Cuba became the first Latin American nation to forge diplomatic ties with China 48 years ago," he said.

Thanks to the concerted efforts of both sides, the Sino-Cuban mutually beneficial and friendly cooperation in all areas have been expanding continuously, and bilateral ties have entered a new era of all-round development, said Hu.

"Our two nations, parties and peoples have become reliable friends and brothers who share weal and woe," he said.

"What affected me and other Chinese leaders most is that you always pay close attention to China's development and remain committed to promoting friendly cooperation between our two countries," Hu added.

Hu noted that Castro ordered to send a medical team to China immediately after the devastating earthquake in Wenchuan, southwest China's Sichuan province on May 12.

The Cuban leader also made constant phone calls to offer instructions on the team's work in China, Hu added.

Moreover, in his article entitled China's Victory, Castro has showed his firm support for China on such major issues as Taiwan, Tibet and the Olympic Games in Beijing, the Chinese president said.

The Cuban leader has also showed great concern about the Chinese students studying in Cuba and the progress of a joint ophthalmic hospital. "The Chinese people, the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government will for ever remember all these," he said.

Castro expressed appreciation of China's relief and reconstruction efforts following the Wenchuan earthquake and other natural disasters. He once again congratulated China on its successful hosting of the Beijing Olympic Games and Paralympics as well as the success of the Shenzhou-7 manned space mission.

Hu said that the Chinese government will always adhere to the principle of long-term friendship between China and Cuba. The Chinese people will, as always, support the just struggle of the Cuban people in safeguarding state sovereignty and opposing outside interference.

China will continue to provide assistance for Cuba within its capacity, and will firmly support the country's socialist cause, he said.

"We will work with the Cuban people to continuously push forward the development of friendship between China and Cuba," he added.

Castro said he and other Cuban comrades have followed closely "everything that happened in China."

"China has a large population and a culture of long standing and the Chinese people are known for their diligence," he said, adding that the Chinese people "have surmounted all manner of unimaginable difficulties and accomplished great achievements in construction."

"As the current international financial crisis is spreading, the Chinese economy has kept a sound momentum for development, demonstrating that China is the most prepared country," he said.

China is the most dynamic nation in the world and "no force can stop it from forging ahead," he said.

The two leaders also exchanged views on the two countries' economic development and major international and regional issues, including the international financial crisis and the world economy.

Before the conclusion of the meeting, Hu again expressed his heartfelt wish for Castro's good health. Castro, in return, expressed his gratitude.

Cuba is the third leg of Hu's five-nation trip. He has attended a Group of 20 summit on the financial crisis in Washington and visited Costa Rica.

He will also visit Peru and Greece, and attend the Economic Leaders' Informal Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in the Peruvian capital of Lima.

Hijacked supertanker moors off Somalia as eight pirates escape prison

MOGADISHU, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- The hijacked Saudi-owned supertanker has anchored off the coast of northeastern Somalia while eight pirates escaped from prison in the semi-autonomous Somali region of Puntland, officials said Tuesday.

The Sirius Star, capable of carrying 2 million barrels of crude oil, along with its international crew of 25, was hijacked over the weekend by Somali pirates 450 miles off the coast of the Kenyan port town of Mombasa and has since been heading towards the Somali port town of Harard here in Puntland.

"We have reports that the tanker is now moored at Harard here, near where the Ukrainian ship carrying the weapons is being held,"Bile Mohamoud Qabobe, an adviser to the Puntland President told Xinhua by phone from Bossaso, the commercial capital of the region.

"We are concerned about the close proximity between the two ships which could cause disaster for both the local people, the crew on both ships as well as the marine environment," Qabobe added.

Meanwhile, in Bossaso, eight Somali pirates being held at the local central prison have escaped and are now being pursued by the Puntland security forces, Qabobe said.

He denied reports that the escapees included two of nine pirates handed over to Puntland authorities by the French Navy in October.

Some reports from Puntland where piracy is rampant said that the pirates, who are usually better equipped and trained than local forces because of the huge ransom payout they get from hijacked ships, bribed the prison guards for their escape.

The waters off Somalia's coast are considered to be some of the world's most dangerous. Pirates have hijacked more than 30 ships this year and attacked many more.

Most attacks have been in the Gulf of Aden between Yemen and north Somalia, a major route leading to the Suez Canal linking Europe and Asia.
