Atletico Madrid to abandon the Vicente Calderon Stadium
MADRID, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo and the mayor of Madrid Alberto Ruiz Gallardon signed the agreement on Friday that confirms Atletico Madrid to leave their Vicente Calderon Stadium by the 2012-2013 seasonAtletico will move across town to "La Peineta" which is to be transformed from a stadium which today holds just 20,000 spectators, into a state of the art ground with the capacity for 73,729 fans.
"La Peineta" is central to Madrid's bid to host the 2016 Olympic Games and would also serve as the venue for track and field events, should the city be chosen.
If that happened, Atletico would play their last matches of the2015-16 season and their opening games of the 2016-17 campaign at another venue.
The club would also have to pay 20 million euros for the work needed to incorporate an athletics track, above the 195 million they will have to pay towards the construction of the new stadium.
"This is an historic opportunity for us to grow and for us to put the foundations of a project that is both promising and ambitious," said Cerezo at the signing ceremony.
