Vasco pulls away from danger zone

RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- At the request of the head coach of the Vasco soccer team, the fans did their part on Saturday by appearing in large numbers to root for their team.

As a result, the team broke their four game streak on not producing a victory at home. By a score of 1-0, the team beat Santos in the 34th round of play in the 2008 Brasileiro Championship.

The hero of Saturday's game was Edmundo. After sitting for the first half of the game, the player entered the field 10 minutes into the second half. The team was awarded a penalty kick in the 27th minute when Domingos took out Jonilson in the penalty box. Edmundo took the penalty kick and did not disappoint the home crowd, driving the ball into the right side of the goal.

"I am full of happiness. In the last couple of games, the fans have been great, but we were unable to produce a victory for them. We are getting better with each game. Tonight, we are all going to sleep better knowing that we are out of danger of being sent into the second division," analyzed Edmundo after the victory.

With Saturday's victory, Vasco now stands in 15th place with 37points. Five positions out of danger of being lowered into the second division of the Brasileiro Championship of 2009, the team returns to the field on Wednesday night to face Atletico-MG on the road in the 35th round of play.
