Vancouver opens 2010 Paralympic Winter Games

VANCOUVER, March 12 -- The Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games opened in a grand opening ceremonyon Friday with over 60,000 people gethered at BC Place Stadium in the Canadian west coast city.

A two-hour show is going to feature a cast of 5,000 people performing music, dance and songs around a theme of "One inspires many".

A new flame lit the cauldron here just twelve days after the Winter Olympic flame was extinguished.

The Paralympic torch relay arrived in Vancouver on Wednesday for the final leg of its journey before the start of Friday's opening ceremony in Vancouver.

Unlike the Winter Olympic torch relay that travelled across Canada on a massive 45,000-kilometer journey, the longest in Winter Olympic history, the Paralympic torch relay has been a decidedly more-low key affair, taking 10 days in all and covering 13 communities across the country, mainly in the host province British Columbia. About 600 torchbearers are participating nationwide.

The Paralympics, which run from March 12-21, features 1,350 athletes, trainers and support staff from 44 countries and regions.

With the venues spreading out over the Thunderbird Arena at the University of British Columbia, the Vancouver Olympic Center and the mountain resort of Whistler, located about two hours northeast of Vancouver, the athletes will compete in five sports and 64 medal events in the wheelchair curling, ice sledge hockey, Alpine skiing and the Nordic skiing encompassing biathlon and cross-country skiing.

China, which won a record 291 medals at the 2008 Beijing Summer Paralympics, has a small team of seven cross-country skiers and five support staff in Vancouver.

The country, a relative novice in its winter counterpart, made its Winter Paralympics with four athletes at Salt Lake City in 2002, but has yet to win a medal in its two Paralympic appearances.

Rooney at the double as United coasts past Milan

MANCHESTER, England - Wayne Rooney spoiled David Beckham's Old Trafford homecoming Wednesday by scoring another two goals against AC Milan as Manchester United cruised into the Champions League quarterfinals with 4-0 rout.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Manchester United's Wayne Rooney (R) is challenged by AC Milan's David Beckham (L) during their Champions League last 16, second leg soccer match at Old Trafford in Manchester, northern England March 10, 2010.

Having scored twice in United's 3-2 victory in the first leg, Rooney netted in each half to take his tally for the season to 30 while still carrying an knee injury.

Park Ji-sung and Darren Fletcher added another two goals as a rampant United side secured a 7-2 aggregate win against the seven-time European champions.

"It was an impressive night for us," United manager Alex Ferguson said. "When we play at that tempo, we're difficult to play against and it was a really solid performance."

Apart from Ronaldinho's early header and substitute Beckham's volley, Milan never posed any serious threat to United's quest for a third successive final.

"We can't deny what a powerful, strong performance United put in, they played a truly great game," Milan manager Leonardo said. "It's very heavy losing 4-0, but people who follow the team know why and how it's happened. What the first leg demonstrates is that we are not the same team that played tonight.

"It was a strange match and didn't show the truth about our team."

With the game virtually decided by the time Beckham came on in the second half, United fans afforded him a standing ovation and then cheered most touches from the midfielder, who returned to face United at Old Trafford for the first time since leaving seven years ago.

"It was nice to be back and obviously a disappointing night," Beckham said. "When you don't start in game it's one of those things when you always want to play.

"But it was an unbelievable reception and I have to say thank you."

United fans also continued their protests against the Glazer family, who took over the club in 2005 after Beckham's departure and has burdened the three-time European champions with debts of $1.1 billion.

Across the ground, supporters held up protest scarves in green and gold of Newton Heath, the original incarnation of United, rather than red and black.

One banner intertwined the two themes, playing on the former England captain's nickname: "Welcome Home Green-And-Goldenballs."

Beckham left the pitch wearing one of the protest scarves, giving the perfect picture for fans trying to force the Glazers to sell.

But after starting the first leg, Beckham had to settle with a place on the bench from where he watched United's new superstar, Rooney, extend the Premier League champion's lead in the 13th minute.

Captain Gary Neville raced forward unchallenged and picked out Rooney with a precise cross from the right and the England forward rose above Bonera to claim his ninth header in his last 10 games.

Until that point, the closest the lethargic visitors came was when Ronaldinho headed wide in the eighth, but there was no urgency or threat from the Italian club.

While the score remained a 1-0 at half time, Rooney netted again within a minute of the restart. Nani charged down the left flank and crossed to the onrushing Rooney, who clipped the ball past Abbiati.

"He's such a talent," Beckham said. "Without a doubt he's one of the best _ if not the best at the moment with Messi and (Cristiano) Ronaldo."

Park slid in United's third in the 59th after being fed by Paul Scholes, ending any chance of a Milan comeback minutes before Beckham's arrival off the bench _ with the 74,595 crowd on its feet applauding.

"He deserved that, most of our former players get that kind of reception," Ferguson said.

While Beckham did test Edwin van der Sar with a volley, Fletcher scored United's fourth in the 87th, meeting Rafael da Silva's cross at the past post and heading over Abbiati.

With the United victory secured, the home fans began continuously chanting "We want Glazers out" and unfurling "Love United, Hate Glazer" banners around the ground.

Real Madrid crashes out of Champions League

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos (R) duels for the ball during during the second leg of the first knockout round Champions League soccer match at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid, Wednesday March 10, 2010.

MADRID, March 10 -- Real Madrid drew 1-1 at home to Olympic Lyon to crash out of the Champions League Wednesday night.

It is the sixth consecutive season that the club has failed to get past the first knockout round of Europe's most important competition, but this year's failure is the most painful of all.

Returning President Florentino Perez invested over 250 million Euros in players such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka with the aim of lifting a historic tenth title.

The fact this year's final is to be held in Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu Stadium was another factor motivating Madrid and is another reason why this failure hurts more than any.

With Xabi Alonso and Marcelo both suspended, Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini opted to bring Guti back into his starting 11 along with Esteban Granero.

Meanwhile Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Gonzalo Higuain formed a fearsome attacking trident to try and overturn Lyon's 1-0 advantage from the first leg.

With the Madrid press having built up the game for several days, the stands in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium were packed out and there was a tremendous atmosphere in the stadium.

Everything looked to be going exactly to plan when Cristiano Ronaldo scored for Madrid after just six minutes. The Portuguese striker ran onto a Guti pass and fired home from a narrow angle with a low shot.

That goal leveled the tie and Madrid went looking for the second goal. Gonzalo Higuain twice went close after 12 minutes and then hit the post with Lyon keeper Lloris beaten after 25 minutes later.

Real Madrid had enjoyed enough chances in the first 45 minutes to have put the tie beyond doubt, but with just a 1-0 lead and without having scored in Lyon three weeks ago, Pellegrin's side was always going to be vulnerable to conceding an away goal.

Maybe Olympic coach Claude Puel sensed that and made a double change at the break, bringing on Gonalons and Kallstrom, with the result that his side took control of events.

Lyon had possession of the ball and created the only chances in the second period as the home fans grew increasingly nervous.

Maybe the 80,000 in the Bernabeu knew what was going to happen as Lyon leveled on the night after 75 minutes, Pjanic scoring a left foot shot from, inside the area.

Madrid now had to score twice, but was unable to react and the failure was complete. The question now is how long will it be before Pellegrini loses his job.
