U.S. routs China in women's ice hockey at Vancouver Olympics

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden gives a thumbs up as he arrives to watch the U.S. women's hockey team play China at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics, February 14, 2010.

VANCOUVER, Feb. 14 -- The United States trounced China 12-1 in the women's ice hockey in the second day competition at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games here on Sunday.

The United States, seeded second in the Games, opened scoring quite early at two minutes 50 seconds as defence Angela Ruggiero helped her team to take the lead.

It was too hard for the world number nine China to stop the opponents' attack when Kelli Stack, Jenny Potter and Meghan Duggan added four more goals to finish the first period at 5-0.

China tried hard to put a shot at 57:39 by forward veteran Jin Fengling, but one goal was far from enough to change the situation when the United States controlled the game since the start to the last minute, scoring seven more goals in two periods to settle the match 12-1.

China's Zhang Ben (L) fights with Natalie Darwitz of the United States of America during the women's preliminary round Group B match of ice hockey at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, Canada, on Feb. 14, 2010.

"Without this game we can't learn anything and it's a good lesson for us how to learn ice hockey," said Finnish Hannu Juhani Saintula, head coach of Chinese team.

"It's a good lesson for us on how to play in our own end. We can't practise that. I'm really proud of my girls because they fought, " he added.

27-year-old Jing Fengling said:"I think the United States has a stronger team and I just wanted one goal. I was so happy and it was an honour for me."

Team captain added: "We tried our best. We tried to get a goal and we got it. It's good for us. We made some little mistakes but we wanted to gain more experience."

"We never gave up. It will be good for the next games. We tried not to pay attention to the score and just gave a good effort," she added.

It is third time that China played against the United States. In the very first Olympic match for both on February 8, 1998, the United States prevailed 5-0.

And on February 15, 2002, the United States beat China 12-1.

China will play against Finland on Tuesday, and Wang believed China would feel more relaxed againse Finland and their next opponent in Group B Russia.

"I think everything is possible. We just need to keep on going like we did. We will have a much better score next game," she said.

"(Tough it's a convincing win), obviously with the Olympic feel it's fun. It's not what we train for, but it's a hockey game nonetheless." said the forward Natalie Darwita of the United States.

Eight teams are competing in the Winter Olympic women's ice hockey tournament with Canada and the United States the clear favorites to win the gold medal.

BEIJING, Jan. 10 -- Alexander Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals was added to the Eastern Conference's All-Star team on Thursday after failing to earn a spot through a ballot by fans.

Three members of the Eastern Conference-leading Boston Bruins, goaltender Tim Thomas, defenseman Zdeno Chara and center Marc Savard, were among the 15 players added on Thursday.

All three played in last season's game, Savard scoring the winner at 19:39 of the third period while Thomas stopped 14-of-18 shots in the same session to record the victory.

The East will also feature two former All-Star MVPs, last year's winner Eric Staal of the Carolina Hurricanes and Ottawa Senators winger Dany Heatley who took the honor after scoring four goals in 2003.

Other debutants include New York Rangers netminder Henrik Lundqvist, New York Islanders defenseman Mark Streit and New Jersey Devils forward Zach Parise.

Devils bounce back starring Clemmensen

Montreal Canadiens winger Matt D'Agostini (36) backhands a shot off the mask of New Jersey Devils goalie Scott Clemmensen (35) in front of defenseman Johnny Oduya (29) in the first period of their NHL hockey game in Newark, New Jersey, January 2, 2009.

BEIJING, Jan. 4 -- New Jersey goaltender Scott Clemmensen stopped 33 shots to guide the Devils to a 4-1 home victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Friday.

Clemmensen, who has been a major factor in his team's success since taking over for injured starting goalie Martin Brodeur in November, improved to 14-6-1 in net.

"We had a tremendous effort from our goaltender right on out," Devils coach Brent Sutter said. "I had tremendous confidence in the guys and how they responded. You can go right through the lineup, everyone played really well."

Zach Parise led the offense with a goal and an assist as New Jersey snapped Montreal's three-game win streak.

With a first-period snap shot, Parise ran his team-leading goals total to 22 and recorded his fourth score in the last four contests.

New Jersey Devils goalie Scott Clemmensen (L) makes a save in front of Montreal Canadiens winger Max Pacioretty (67) and center Kyle Chipchura in the second period of their NHL hockey game in Newark, New Jersey, January 2, 2009.

New Jersey (22-12-3) rebounded from a disappointing 2-4 defeat to the Dallas Stars on Wednesday and pulled within two points of the New York Rangers for the Atlantic Division lead. The Canadiens (21-10-6), second place in the Northeast, failed to gain ground on the league-leading Boston Bruins.

Goalie Jaroslav Halak was chased after allowing three goals in two periods for Montreal, which has been plagued by injuries.

Left wing Alex Tanguay will be sidelined for six weeks after sustaining a shoulder injury against Tampa Bay on Tuesday, joining Saku Koivu (ankle), Christopher Higgins (groin), Mathieu Dandenault (arm) and George Laraque (groin) on the inactive list.

Brian Gionta gave the Devils a 1-0 lead at 14:21 of the first period before Max Pacioretty scored for Montreal on his NHL debut two minutes later to tie the game.

Parise put the Devils back on top with 1:35 left in the first. John Madden scored at 11:11 into the second, and in the third Jamie Langenbrunner added the fourth.

"We had a very difficult time getting that fourth goal, even though we did eventually," Clemmensen said. "A 4-1 final score, I don't think was very indicative of the type of game it was tonight."

In Anaheim, Mike Richards scored the only goal in the shootout to lead Philadelphia 5-4 over Anaheim.

In Denver, Kristian Huselius scored twice in Columbus' easy 6-1 win over Colorado.

In Atlanta, the home side prevailed over Vancouver 4-3 in the shootout to snap a four-game losing skid. Elsewhere, it was: Hurricanes 2, Blues 1; and Coyotes 5, Islanders 4.

Steve Ott, Fabian Brunnstrom, Brad Richards, Krystopfer Barch and Mike Ribeiro also scored for the Stars while Jason Blake and Mikhail Grabovski answered for the Maple Leafs.

It was a bitterly disappointing result for the Leafs, who had won five of their previous six games.

Slovenia names new coach for national ice hockey team

BELGRADE, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Canadian Kevin Gaudet was named on Friday the new head coach of Slovenia's national men's ice hockey team, the Hockey Association of Slovenia said.

Gaudet, 45, will try to lead the team through the Winter Olympic qualifiers next February, the Slovenian news agency STA reported.

He will be at the helm of the national team at least for the qualifying tournament, which will be held in Germany's Hanover between Feb. 5 and 8. Slovenia will be competing with Germany, Austria and Japan.

The Hockey Association also said they will consider a replacement if Caudet fails to get the team through the qualifying.

The association had been looking for a new coach since the Ice Hockey World Championship in Canada in May, where Slovenia was relegated to Division I and then head coach Mats Waltin was fired.

Blake's magic moment lifts Leafs to win over Devils

TORONTO - Jason Blake produced a magical piece of skill to score the shootout winner and lift the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 3-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday.

Blake moved in close and stopped in front of Devils goalie Scott Clemmensen before spinning round and slipping a backhand past him in the fourth round of the shootout to secure his team's third win in a row.

"It (shootouts) has been tough for me, so I figured what the heck, may as well try something different," Blake told reporters. "It worked so I'm happy with it.

"It's just great to be out there and to be counted on by your team mates in a situation like that. I'm glad I was able to come through for them."

Brian Rolston fired a shot wide past Vesa Toskala as the Leafs earned their first three-game winning streak of the season.

Toronto coach Ron Wilson said Blake's shootout move was one he has practised.

"He's either going to be a hero or bum with a play like that," Wilson said. "A lot of things can happen when you try and make a play like that.

"The puck looked like it was on his stick like glue. It was unbelievable, fun to watch especially since he scored."

It was the second straight loss for the Devils but just their third in 12 games as Clemmensen, who played for the Leafs last season, continues to play well deputising for the injured Martin Brodeur.

"It was a lot of fun to come back here and get a chance to play," Clemmensen said. "I just wish we could have had a better result tonight."

Michael Rupp and Zach Parise scored for the Devils while Nik Antropov and Jeremy Williams netted for the surprising Leafs, who are 12-12-6 and just three points out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

"If .500 is considered success, well that's just the line of mediocrity for me," Wilson said. "What I like seeing is some of our young players stepping up and being big contributors to our team. That is encouraging."

New Jersey (16-10-2) remained seventh in the East. Clemmensen and Toskala both made 27 saves in regulation and overtime.

At Toronto, Milan Jurcina's third-period goal stood up as the winner and Washington beat Toronto.

Karl Alzner also scored for Washington, and Nik Antropov had the only goal for the Maple Leafs.

The Montreal Canadiens also had 43 points through 25 games in the 1943-44 season, going 20-2-3. Flyers 4, Lightning 3, OT=

At Philadelphia, Mike Richards scored two goals, including the winner 2:05 into overtime, and Philadelphia sent Tampa Bay to its fifth straight loss.

The Lightning missed an opportunity to win with 16.3 seconds left in regulation when Ryan Malone was awarded a penalty shot, but he pushed the attempt wide. During a breakaway, Philadelphia forward Scott Hartnell threw his glove at the puck to set up the penalty shot.

Jeff Carter scored the other two Philadelphia goals and added an assist for the Flyers, who had won six straight before dropping their previous two games. Richards netted the Flyers' NHL-leading 10th short-handed goal.

Peltonen tied it at 6:19 of the second period, and Bouwmeester was credited with the go-ahead goal when Washington's David Steckel's pass hit teammate Karl Alzner's skate in front and went between Jose Theodore's pads.

The Panthers made it 3-1 when Bryan McCabe's shot deflected off Washington defenseman Shaone Morrisonn and in with 7:51 left in the second period.

Craig Anderson, who has the best save percentage in the NHL, stopped 23 saves and earned his second straight win. Canadiens 5, Thrashers 4=

Ron Hainsey scored twice as Atlanta netted three goals in less than a minute to erase their 3-0 deficit 7:27 into the third. The Thrashers broke two franchise records for fastest goals. They scored three times within 59 seconds, including two goals seven seconds apart by Hainsey and Chris Thorburn.

Toby Petersen also scored and Loui Eriksson added an empty-netter with 15 seconds left for Dallas, which climbed out of sole possession of last place in the Western Conference.

David Moss scored the lone goal for Calgary.

Avery was suspended indefinitely by the NHL for conduct "detrimental to the league or game of hockey" after the outspoken forward made disparaging comments about Calgary's Dion Phaneuf.

Thomas stands firm to help Bruins edge out Maple Leafs

The Bruins were outplayed for a majority of the game by the Maple Leafs, who returned home after a week-long road trip, but Thomas made several big saves to help Boston improve to 9-1-1 in their past 11 games.

"At different points in the season you have to win in different ways," Thomas told reporters after his 28-save effort.

"We got some bounces tonight and took advantage of them.

"Could we have played better? Definitely. Are we happy with the two points? Definitely."

Matt Hunwick scored his first ever NHL goal for the Bruins while Michael Ryder and Phil Kessel added the others as the Northeast Division-leading Bruins maintained second place overall in the Eastern Conference.

"It wasn't our best game, but it says a lot about us a team when we can win and not play that well," Ryder said. "I think teams in this league are starting to recognise we are a pretty good team.

"Good teams win some games maybe they shouldn't win."

Toronto coach Ron Wilson felt his team deserved more from the contest.

"I can't complain about our effort, especially after the trip we just went through," Wilson said. "We had territorial advantage and we hit three posts and one crossbar. The puck just didn't go in."

The Leafs played three games in Western Canada last week, losing two of them. They returned home 24 hours before the game and appeared sluggish early, falling behind 2-0 in the first period on goals by Kessel and Hunwick.

Jason Blake got one goal back for the Leafs before the first period ended, but Ryder's shot at 14:11 of the second beat Toronto goalie Vesa Toskala up high and turned out to be the game winner.

"I haven't been scoring a lot of goals so it's a relief," Ryder, who signed a three-year free agency contract with the Bruins in the off-season, said of his third goal of the campaign.

"The guys have been very patient with me and as long as we are winning, my goal total doesn't matter that much."

Mikhail Grabovski scored the other Toronto goal.

Rangers beat Lightning in Prague season opener

PRAGUE: The New York Rangers defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 thanks to a late powerplay goal to get the season underway in the Czech capital on Saturday.

Rangers center Brandon Dubinsky secured victory with just under six minutes remaining having been caught in the face moments earlier by Lightning winger Gary Roberts, who was booked for high-sticking.

The game, played in front of 17,085 fans at Prague's O2 Arena, was the first regular-season game played in continental Europe as the NHL continues its bid to reach a wider audience.

The Rangers and Lightning are playing back-to-back games over the weekend in Prague while the Pittsburgh Penguins and Ottawa Senators also meet twice in Stockholm.

The weekend set follows a successful opening to the season in London last year.

Rangers newcomer Markus Naslund opened the scoring with 1:52 left in the second period before Lightning winger Martin St Louis countered four minutes into the third with a backhand goal. Dubinsky said victory was more important than him getting the winning goal.

"The bottom line is we needed two points," he told reporters. "If it didn't come from me it was going to come from somewhere. It was our game to win."

The Rangers, who outshot the Lightning 41-21, were eliminated by Stanley Cup runner-up Pittsburgh in last season's Eastern Conference semifinals and have brought in new players to fill the void left by Czech forward Jaromir Jagr, who signed for Russian club Omsk Vanguard in July.

"We wanted to make sure we simplified our game this year," said Rangers coach Tom Renney. "A powerplay is a classic example of getting the puck to the net and taking what your opponent gives you."

Pittsburgh 4, Ottawa 3

In Stockholm, the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Ottawa Senators 4-3 with an overtime goal by forward Tyler Kennedy.

Kennedy, who also grabbed the opening goal, fired a wrist shot past goaltender Martin Gerber at 4:35 of overtime to hand the Penguins victory in Stockholm.

"I've worked really hard in the summer and built a lot of confidence," Kennedy told reporters.

The last two losing Stanley Cup finalists were playing back-to-back games in the Swedish capital over the weekend.

Kennedy opened the scoring after 40 seconds by flicking the puck from a tight angle past Gerber.

The first half was dominated by the Penguins but the Senators leveled at 9:13 through Shean Donovan. Forward Evgeni Malkin capitalized on sloppy play by the Senators to restore the lead for the Penguins at 3:18 in the second period.

The Senators, though, hit back when Jason Spezza set up a goal for Dany Heatley before making it 3-2 himself at 17:55.

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby then found defenseman Rob Scuderi who made it 3-3 at 3:56 in the third.

"It's tough to lose when you're one goal ahead going into the third period," said Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson, the only Swede on the ice.

"We had a five-on-three in the third period where we had the chance to put the game away."

SANTIAGO - Eight-times gold medallists India missed out on the Olympic Games men's hockey event for the first time when they lost 2-0 to Britain in the final of a qualifying tournament on Sunday.

Britain, gold medallists in 1988, scored two early goals to seal India's fate and win the six-team competition in Chile which also featured the hosts, Austria, Russia and Mexico.

Ashley Jackson set up the first for Barry Middleton in the fourth minute and Richard Mantell flicked in the second in the 10th.

Forward Prabhjot Singh had two efforts blocked in quick succession as India, who won their last gold in 1980, tried to claw their way back and V.R.Raghunath then fired over from a rebound.

India, also beaten 3-2 by the same opponents in the round- robin stage, were unable to find a way through in the second half despite winning a flurry of penalty corners.

"We have been waiting for this for eight months," said Britain captain Ben Hawes.

"It's ...a massive accomplishment for the team. After Thursday, when they played very well, we were aware we had to start quickly.

"The game opened up after the early goal and we weren't as nervous after that. We stayed very physical in the tackle, our technical game has improved a lot and we created chances."

China, Netherlands, South Korea, Canada, South Africa, Spain, Belarus, Pakistan and Australia qualified directly for the Beijing Games.

India missed out on an automatic berth after they failed to reach the 2006 Asian Games final.

New Zealand beat Argentina in the final of the first qualifying tournament last month। The third is in Japan in April.
