Higgins investigation now underway, to last weeks

Scotland's John Higgins celebrates his victory in the awarding ceremony after defeats England's Shaun Murphy by 18-9 in the two-day final match of 2009 World Snooker Championship in Sheffield, England, May 4, 2009.

BEIJING, May 4 -- Snooker's inquiry into a newspaper report saying world number one John Higgins agreed to take a bribe has already begun and will be completed within weeks, the sport's chief Barry Hearn said on Monday.

Higgins was suspended on Sunday after a report in the News of the World said he had agreed to lose frames for money.

There is no suggestion Higgins, 34, has ever thrown a frame or fixed a match and he issued a statement to the media on Sunday firmly denying involvement in any form of snooker match-fixing, and pledging to cooperate fully with authorities.

Hearn said the governing WPBSA would conclude its investigation swiftly.

"The investigation, which is being handled by former Metropolitan Police chief superintendent David Douglas, has already started," Hearn, the WPBSA chairman, told Reuters.

"The date of the hearing will be set shortly and the process will take weeks rather than months. It is something we've got to meet head on."

Higgins, who won his third world title last year but was knocked out early in the current world championship, has vowed to clear his name.

"In my 18 years playing professional snooker I have never deliberately missed a shot, never mind intentionally lost a frame of a match," Higgins said in a statement.

He added: "Those who know me are aware of my love for snooker and that I would never do anything to damage the integrity of the sport I love. My conscience is 100 per cent clear."

Sunday's report came hours before the start of the final of the world championship, the sport's showpiece event. The final concludes on Monday.

The News of the World described what it said was a meeting between Higgins, his agent Pat Mooney -- whose resignation as a member of the WPBSA board was accepted on Sunday -- and reporters purporting to be businessmen in Kiev.

Higgins said in his statement he had become worried he might be dealing with "the Russian mafia" when it was suggested he throw frames in return for large sums of money.

"At that stage I felt the best course of action was just to play along with these guys and get out of Ukraine," he said.

LeBron retains NBA MVP title

LeBron James (R) of the Cleveland Cavaliers accepts his MVP award from Kia Vice President of Sales Tom Loveless (L) during a ceremony at the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio May 2, 2010.

NEW YORK, May 2 -- Cleveland's LeBron James extended his NBA Most Valuable Player award by taking 116 of a possible 123 first-place votes for a landslide triumph Sunday over runner-up Kevin Durant.

James, who had 109 of a possible 121 first-place votes from a media panel last year, was more overwhelming this year to defeat Oklahoma City's Durant, who had four first-place votes, and Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers.

James has powered the Cavaliers into the second round of the NBA playoffs. Cleveland beat Boston in game one of their best-of- seven series and hosts game two Monday.

Orlando center Dwight Howard, fourth overall, received the other three first-place ballots.

James, 25, took his game to another level as he led the Cavaliers to a league-best 61 victories in the regular season. He averaged 29.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 8.6 assists this season.

James accepted his award at Rhodes Arena at the University of Akron, Ohio, where he played many times as a high school star.

The Cavaliers playmaker became the 10th player to be named NBA Most Valuable Player in two consecutive seasons, joining Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Moses Malone, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Tim Duncan and Steve Nash.

"It hasn't been hard at all," James said. "I understand what my job is. I want to be the best player every night I go on the court. Me being the focus in free agency has nothing to do with what's going on the court. I can push that stuff aside."

Russell, Chamberlain and Bird won it three times in a row.

Barcelona shows authority with 1-4 win in Villarreal

Barcelona's Sergio Busquets (front) controls the ball past Villarreal's Bruno Soriano during their Spanish first division soccer match at the Madrigal Stadium in Villarreal May 1, 2010.

MADRID, May 1 -- FC Barcelona showed this Saturday night that its authority in Spain remains intact despite the club's midweek Champions League exit to Inter Milan.

The Pro-Real Madrid press had signaled Saturday's visit to sixth place Villarreal as the moment when Pep Guardiola's side could drop the points that would allow Madrid to steal in and win the BBVA Primera Liga title.

Those hopes were to be dashed after 90 minutes in Villarreal's El Madrigal Stadium. Villarreal went into the game with five wins from six games that had lifted them into sixth place in the table, but Barcelona was simply too good on the night.

Nilmar wasted a good chance for Villarreal by shooting over when Victor Valdes had left his position in the Barcelona goal and he was to lament his miss as the league leaders took control and virtually killed the game off before half time.

Guardiola left big striker Zlatan Ibrahimovich on the bench and gained mobility with the trio of Pedro, Bojan and Leo Messi, who opened the scoring with a deflected shot after 19 minutes.

Xavi Hernandez doubled the lead with a 22 yard free kick that left Diego Lopez looking slow after 33 minutes and Bojan virtually sealed the win just before the break.

The young striker slipped the ball past his marker just inside the half way line, ran clean through on goal and clipped the ball over Diego.

Joseba Llorente pulled a goal back for Villarreal late in the second half, but Messi's second two minutes before the end game Barcelona win that will boost their morale and leave Real Madrid with plenty to think about ahead of their game against Osasuna this Sunday.
