Rams picks quarterback Sam Bradford No. 1 in NFL draft

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

BEIJING, April 23 -- Sam Bradford, the 2008 winner of the Heisman Trophy, was selected first overall in the U.S. National Football League (NFL) draft by the St. Louis Rams Thursday.

Bradford, from Oklahoma, south central United States, is the eighth quarterback since 2001 selected atop the draft, according to an Associated Press story.

The St. Louis-based Rams was 1-15 last season and scored a league-low 175 points. The Rams cut incumbent quarterback Marc Bulger in the offseason.

Bradford's selection opened the first NFL draft to begin in prime-time at Radio City Music Hall in New York. An hour before the draft, he admitted that he was nervous. "The butterflies are flying around right now," he said.

Bradford appeared in only three games in 2009, his junior year, before a right shoulder surgery. His recovery has been so complete that the Rams didn't hesitate to make him the future face of the franchise.

He was immediately followed Thursday night by defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh of Nebraska, the AP Player of the Year, and DT Gerald McCoy, Bradford's teammate with the Sooners.

MADRID, April 20 -- Former International Olympic Committee president Juan Antonio Samaranch, 89, has been hospitalized in Barcelona for suffering severe heart trouble and his prognosis is "very bad", a hospital spokesman said Tuesday.

Samaranch was head of the IOC from 1980 to 2001. Only Pierre de Coubertin, the "father" of the modern Olympics and IOC chief from 1896 to 1925, has held the post longer.

He has been hospitalized several times in recent years, most recently in Monoco in 2009 after he fainted.

Samaranch was hospitalized for "extreme fatigue" in Switzerland in 2001 shortly after he stepped down as IOC head and in Barcelona in 2007 for high blood pressure. He has also received dialysis treatment for kidney trouble.

Real Madrid beat Valencia to move within one point of Barca

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Real Madrid moved back to within one point of La Liga leaders FC Barcelona with a 2-0 win at home to third-placed Valencia in the 33rd round of the La Liga on Sunday.

MADRID, April 18 -- Real Madrid moved back to within one point of La Liga leaders FC Barcelona with a 2-0 win at home to third-placed Valencia in the 33rd round of the La Liga on Sunday.

The result takes Madrid to back to within just one point of Barcelona, who could only draw 0-0 away to Espanyol 24 hours earlier.

Valencia were considered to be one of the most difficult rivals Real Madrid would have to face in its remaining six matches.

However, despite being third in the league, the visitors kicked off 21 points behind Real Madrid and ended it 24 points behind.

Gonzalo Higuain opened the scoring with his 25th goal of the season in an excellent first half from the home side as Valencia struggled to get into the game.

The visitors got more into things after the break and David Silva was unlucky to see a powerful shot bounce back from the woodwork. Cristiano Ronaldo then secured the points midway through the second half.

The result means the race for the title will go right to the wire, but given that Valencia are the third best team in Spain, Real Madrid's easy win only raises more questions about the competitiveness of the Spanish League.

Sunday's other games saw two goalless draws as Malaga and Valladolid produced a horror-show in the La Rosaleda Stadium. The result means that Valladolid are unbeaten under new coach Javier Clemente, although still deep in the relegation zone.

Real Madrid moved back to within one point of La Liga leaders FC Barcelona with a 2-0 win at home to third-placed Valencia in the 33rd round of the La Liga on Sunday.

Deportivo la Coruna also drew 0-0 in a dull game against Almeria.

Xerez fought back from 2-1 down at home to Racing Santander to draw 2-2. Tcheite scored twice for the visitors, but Victor Sanchez scored the goal that ensured honors finished even. Xerez continues bottom of the table.

Finally Tenerife beat Getafe 3-2 to give themselves a real chance of avoiding relegation. Nino was the hero for the home team with a hat trick that leaves Tenerife just one points from safety, while damaging Getafe's chances of qualifying for Europe next season.

Meanwhile Athletic Club Bilbao created all of the chances but was unable to find a way past Zaragoza keeper Roberto. The game finished 0-0 in the San Mames Stadium.

Saturday night saw Barcelona's 0-0 draw against Espanyol where the leaders had to withstand a physical display from their neighbors in a game that saw Dani Alves sent off for two Bellow cards.

Sevilla returned to form with a straightforward 3-0 win at home to Sporting Gijon. Freddy Kanoute, Luis Fabiano and youngster Cala, who netted his third goal in three matches, scored the goals that keep Sevilla in fourth place.

Finally Villarreal took another step towards European football with a 2-1 win at home to Atletico Madrid.. Godin and Rossi hit the net for the home side.

Button leads McLaren one-two in Chinese GP

Reigning world champion Jenson Button held off teammate Lewis Hamilton to win a traditionally wet Chinese Grand Prix for McLaren on Sunday and see him replace Ferrari's Felipe Massa atop the driver standings.

BEIJING, April 19 -- Reigning world champion Jenson Button held off teammate Lewis Hamilton to win a traditionally wet Chinese Grand Prix for McLaren on Sunday and see him replace Ferrari's Felipe Massa atop the driver standings.

"It is my best victory," said Button, who started from fifth on the grid, one ahead of Hamilton. Button benefited from prudent tire changes as patchy rain played havoc with all the drivers and gave them different conditions to deal with on each lap.

"It wasn't just the luck of calling the weather, we also had the pace," said the British, who joked that he was going to hire a car and race the other F1 drivers back to Europe as a volcanic ice cloud from Iceland continues to throw world air traffic into chaos.

"We still don't know where we are in the dry, but we've proved what we can do in the wet," he added. McLaren, which now leads Ferrari by 19 points in the constructor standings, has found itself playing second-fiddle to the faster Red Bulls and Ferraris this season.

Button beat Hamilton to the checkered flag by the narrowest of margins, or 1.53 seconds. Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg claimed the final spot on the podium after seizing an early lead and setting the pace for the first third of the race.

The result pushes Button, who finished third here last year and won two races ago in Melbourne, to the top of the driver standings with 60 points, 10 ahead of Germany's Rosberg. Ferrari's Fernando Alonso is one back on 49 with Hamilton, while Red Bull hot rod Sebastian Vettel, who finished sixth, has 45.

The race at Shanghai International Circuit got off to an explosive start - and delivered its seventh winner in as many years.

Fiery Spaniard Alonso stole Vettel's pole position within an eye-blink of the get-go but he was subsequently given the equivalent of a one-lap handicap for his illegal jump-start.

Reigning world champion Jenson Button held off teammate Lewis Hamilton to win a traditionally wet Chinese Grand Prix for McLaren on Sunday and see him replace Ferrari's Felipe Massa atop the driver standings.

Force India's Vitantonio Liuzzi then crashed out in spectacular fashion five turns later, taking BMW-Sauber's Kamui Kobayashi, the first Japanese driver to race in F1, and Torro Rosso's Sebastien Buemi with him.

Liuzzi's mishap also sent shivers down Button's spine as safety cars cleared up debris from the middle of the track.

"I had my heart in my mouth after that," he said. "It was very, very slippery out there. Every bit of water I touched, I aquaplaned."

Alonso flashed his brilliance by tearing up the grid from 13th to finish fourth and prove that even a drive-through penalty cannot derail his bid for a third world championship.

He said earlier that the weather would decide the results of yesterday's race, but this proved much truer for Vettel, who was expected to claim his second straight win in the city after also triumphing two weeks ago in Malaysia.

The 22-year-old German holds the keys to the hottest rod in F1 right now, but this didn't stop him coming unstuck as drizzle watered the track and forced him into several early tire changes.

Red Bull teammate Mark Webber also gave Vettel's confidence a knock by overtaking him at the first corner - sweet revenge, perhaps, after Vettel did him the same honor at the last race in Sepang.

Rosberg then moved into what looked like an unassailable lead before Button made his move in the 19th lap and refused to relinquish it.

Hamilton, who fell back to 12th earlier in the race, heaped the pressure on Button later on as the laps peeled away and rain lashed the track. The younger man was soon fogging up Button's rear-view mirror after surviving two decisive mid-race battles.

One of these, with Vettel, included a pit-stop tussle that earned him a slap on the wrist but no points deducted after the race. The second was with seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, back from a three-year layoff and racing for Mercedes.

"Yes we had a bit of a battle," said Hamilton, who put in another phenomenonal performance after moving up from 20th to sixth during the Sepang race. "It was an eventful race."

Schumacher, who won here in 2006 and holds the lap record, put himself in contention for his first podium finish of 2010 by securing fifth-place in the middle of Sunday's action. He later dropped back to finish 10th.

Bayern humiliates Hannover 7-0 to defend top position

Bayern Munich's Arjen Robben celebrates a goal against Hannover 96 during their German Bundesliga first division soccer match in Munich April 17, 2010.

BERLIN, April 17 -- Record champion Bayern Munich overran relegation threatened Hannover 7-0 while second positioned Schalke remains in touching distance to Bayern after they defeated midtable team Monchengladbach 3-1 on Sunday in Bundesliga.

Bremen displaced Leverkusen from third position after they beat defending champion Wolfsburg 4-2 on Saturday. Record champion Bayern gave Hannover a lesson after a hammering 7-0 victory.

In a one-sided affair, Bayern started as expected aggressive and offensive orientated to defend Bundesliga top position while over challenged Hannover defended deep.

In the 15th minute, Bayern captain Mark van Bommel collected his 10th yellow card to miss the next match against Monchengladbach.

However, Bayern staged good passing and build up play. In the 22th minute, Bayern smoothed the way for their victory. Striker Ivica Olic nodded home a cross from the right wing by defender Diego Contento to mark the opener.

Only eight minutes later, Bayern midfielder Arjen Robben doubled the lead after he finished a superb through ball from their own half by Mark van Bommel with a well-placed lob.

Bayern kept it bowling and tripled the lead minutes before break through striker Thomas Mueller who hammered the ball from 11 meters right footed into top left corner.

After the interval, Bayern extended the lead at the 49th minute. Striker Ivica Olic headed a fumble by Hannover goalie Florian Fromlowitz into open goal. Furthermore, Bayern midfielder Arjen Robben reached a long through ball from defender Phillip Lahm to overcome Hannover’s defence and scored the fifth goal for Bayern.

Finally striker Thomas Mueller and midfielder Arjen Robben marked the final 7-0 score. Hannover was absolutely over challenged and unable to put up some resistance.

Bayern defends top position with 63 points followed by Schalke with 61 points and Bremen with 54 points.

On the same day, Bremen turned around in a goal festival against defending champions Wolfsburg.

As expected Wolfsburg and Bremen started offensive orientated. 18 minutes after kick off Bundesliga top striker Edin Dzeko marked the opener from penalty area into bottom right corner to mark his 20th Bundesliga goal this season.

In the 38th minute Bremen midfielder Torsten Frings converted a penalty to equalize the score. Wolfsburg needed only two minutes to answer the leveller by Bremen. Striker Grafite utilized a deflected through ball by midfielder Misimovic to bring Wolfsburg 2-1 up front.

After the break Bremen turned up. In the 49th minutes on the clock Bremen striker Claudio Pizzaro headed home a cross by defender Clemens Fritz to mark the 2-2 equalizer.

Wolfsburg was stunned and kept it tight at the back meanwhile Bremen pressed for the decider. In the 62nd minute, Torsten Frings shrugged off defender Andrea Barzagli to bring Bremen 3-2 up front.

That's not enough for Bremen. Striker Hugo Almeida marked the final 4-2 score with a terrific hammer from close distance to give Wolfsburg the knock out at the 75th minute.

The deserved victory moved Bremen from 5th to 3rd position to sit on a Champions League position while defending champion Wolfsburg stays on 8th position.

Stuttgart and Leverkusen started aggressive and offensively minded to take some point’s home.

In the 13th minute, striker Stefan Kieling brought Leverkusen up front. Defender Stefan Reinartz well placed through ball utilized Kieling to mark his 19th Bundesliga goal.

At the 19th minute Leverkusen was shorthanded after midfielder Tranquillo Barnetta booked his second yellow for repeated foul play.

Stuttgart needed ten minutes to score in superior numbers. Defender Cristian Molinario crossed into goal area to see Cacau who levelled the score with a diving header at the back post 29 minutes into the match.

Leverkusen remained offensively minded but short on accuracy at the finish.

After the break both teams lurked for the decider. Leverkusen staged good passing while Stuttgart seemed happy with the draw.

But, five minutes before final whistle Stuttgarts striker Cacau slotted the late decider from close distance to mark the final 2-1 score.

Stuttgart climbed from 7th to 6th position while Leverkusen slipped from 3rd to 4th position.

Already on Friday, Cologne defeated Bochum 2-0. Cologne jumped from 13th to 11th position. Bochum remains on 14th position.

On Sunday, Dortmund hosts Hoffenheim while Frankfurt meets bottom team Berlin.
