Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed signs a declaration "SOS from the frontline" which was printed on a white plastic slate during a underwater cabinet meeting held in the turquoise lagoon off Girifushi Island, about 35 km northeast of the capital Male, Oct. 17, 2009. Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed, Vice President Mohamed Waheed and 11 cabinet ministers donned scuba gear and submerged four meters below the surface of sea to hold the world's first underwater cabinet meeting on Saturday, in a bid to push for a stronger climate change agreement in the upcoming UN climate summit in Copenhagen.

COLOMBO, Oct. 17 -- Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed, Vice President Mohamed Waheed and 11 cabinet ministers donned scuba gear and submerged four meters below the surface of sea to hold the world's first underwater cabinet meeting on Saturday, in a bid to push for a stronger climate change agreement in the upcoming UN climate summit in Copenhagen.

During the 30-minute meeting held in the turquoise lagoon off Girifushi Island, about 35 km northeast of the capital Male, Nasheed and his cabinet ministers signed a resolution calling for global cuts in carbon emissions, the President's Office of the Maldives said in a statement published on its official website.

Members of the Maldives government swim to attend the first underwater cabinet meeting in the Maldives, October 17, 2009.

Nasheed and the ministers used a water proof pencil to sign the declaration "SOS from the frontline" which was printed on a white plastic slate.

The declaration will be presented before the UN climate summit in Copenhagen in December, said the statement.

"We are trying to send our message to let the world know what is happening and what will happen to the Maldives if climate change isn't checked" Nasheed was quoted as saying to the press as soon as he resurfaced from underwater.

"What we are trying to make people realize is that the Maldives is a frontline state. This is not merely an issue for the Maldives but for the world. If we can't save the Maldives today, you can't save the rest of the world tomorrow," Nasheed added.

"Climate change is happening and it threatens the rights and security of everyone on Earth," the declaration said.

The declaration called for people to "unite in global effort to halt further temperature rises, by slashing carbon dioxide emissions to a safe level of 350 parts per million".

The Maldives is calling for an agreement at Copenhagen that will help reduce carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere to no more than 350 parts per million. This would require a 40 per cent global reduction in green house gas emissions by 2020 from 1990 levels.

In March this year Nasheed announced that the Maldives would be the first country in the Maldives to go carbon neutral, and the Maldives would achieve the target by 2020.

Nasheed is a certified open water diver, while other ministers took diving lessons recent weeks.

After the dive, signed wet suits of the Nasheed and the ministers will be auctioned on www.protectmaldives.com.mv to raise funds for coral reef protection in the Maldives.

Experts warned that that an increase in sea levels of just 18 to 59 centimeters would make the country virtually uninhabitable by 2100.

More than 80 percent of the tiny atoll nation, comprised of 1,192 coral islands in the Indian Ocean, is less than a meter above sea level.

Barcelona remains atop as Real Madrid's Raul makes history

Valencia's Ever Banega (L) and Barcelona's Toure Yaya fight for the ball during their Spanish first division soccer match at the Mestalla Stadium in Valencia October 17, 2009.

MADRID, Oct. 17 -- Barcelona drew 0-0 away to Valenciaon Saturday night to remain leaders of the BBVA Primera Liga in Spain.

The league leaders and reigning champions were on the back foot for most of the game, but held on for a draw thanks to a fine performance from goalkeeper Victor Valdes.

Valdes made four brilliant saves to deny Valencia forwards David Silva, Juan Mata and Pablo Hernandez as the home side produced a spirited and aggressive performance.

Valencia will argue that had David Villa been fit, they could have won the match, but Barcelona was also missing key players Thierry Henry and Zlatan Ibrahimovich, while Leo Messi and Xavi Hernandez both looked visibly tired after the past week's international matches.

In the end Barcelona will view the result as a point gained rather than two points dropped even if the result stopped the club from winning its seventh game of the season.

Real Madrid's Raul Gonzalez celebrates his goal with teammate Esteban Granero (R) during their Spanish First Division soccer match against Valladolid at Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid October 17, 2009.

Valladolid was the better team in the second period and again looked capable of leveling the match after Marquitos scored with the outside of his foot.

However, substitute Gonzalo Higuain made it 4-2 to Madrid with a lovely chip with just 11 minutes left in the game.

Earlier in the day Sevilla, who had defeated Real Madrid two weeks ago, lost 1-0 away to Deportivo la Coruna.

Juan Rodriguez scored the only goal of the game after 38 minutes with a powerful shot and although Alvaro Negredo twice went close for the visitors, Sevilla couldn't find the equalizer.

Wang Lin, who topped the world ranking since last month, revenged on Wang Shixian as the former lost to the latter in China Masters final in September.

"It's really hard to win the final at last. Playing on national court is always harder than on international circuit," said Wang Lin.

"A National Games champion is far from enough as I need to be more mature especially mentally," added Wang Lin.

Wang Shixian said she lost the match mainly because she was too tired after continuous hard matches in both team and singles events.

"But I'm really satisfied with my performance as I clinched a silver medal in my maiden National Games trip," added the 19-year-old.

JINAN, East China, Oct. 17 -- Weightlifting world champion Wang Mingjuan beat world record holder Yang Lian to win the women's 48kg division with world records lift at the 11th Chinese National Games here on Saturday.

Wang Mingjuan of Hunan celebrates during the women's 48kg weightlifting final in the 11th Chinese National Games in Jinan, east China's Shandong Province, Oct. 17, 2009. She betters women's 48kg weightlifting jerk and snatch records and also the total record.

The 48kg division turned to be a competition between two world champions. Wang Mingjuan, winner in the 2003 and 2005 world championships, lifted 99kg in her last snatch, bettering the world record by one kilogram. The 24-year-old also smashed the national record of the kind.

Then her teammate Yang Lian, gold medalist in the 2006 worlds, snatching 99kg, too.

In the clean and jerk, Wang kept the momentum, hoisting 121kg with a total of 220kg, to beat Yang by two kilos.

Wang, winner in the National Games in 2001, shattered the world records of jerk and total respectively, one kilo and three kilos more than the world records.

"It's so many ups and downs during the eight years. I've never given up when I suffered knee injury and missed the chance to compete in the Olympics," said Wang.

"The competition is much fiercer than I had expected. I made a mistake and looked down on my opponents," said Yang.

"My physical condition is not good since I came here and suffering diarrhoea," she said.

"I had planned to win the gold medal and then retire. But now, I will reconsider my choice.

"Maybe I will fight on," Yang stated.

Wang and Yang are both representing Hunan province in the Chinese National Games. Gao Wei, representing Liaoning, took the bronze at 215kg.

"Wang is a perseverant lifter and she made good lifts today," team leader of Hunan team Liao Suping told Xinhua.

"Yang is passionate on the platform, and Wang is a shy girl with a steady mind. They are on the same level, but today Wang had a better performance," Liao told.

Though smashing three world records, Wang just broke two national records, the snatch and the total.

In Chinese women's weightlifting, 13 of all the 21 national records are higher than the world records of the same kind.

Though bettering weightlifting world records frequently happens in the Chinese National Games, the new results will not be counted as they are not accepted by the International Weightlifting Federation.
