Bilbao and Villarreal win in Europa League

MADRID, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Athletic Bilbao and Villarreal Wednesday both chalked up home wins in the first group game of the Europa League on what was another good night for Spanish teams in Europe.

Athletic Bilbao's Carlos Gurpegi (L) challenges Austria Vienna's Emin Sulimani during their Europa League soccer match at San Mames stadium in Bilbao September 17, 2009.

Athletic Bilbao went into its game against Austria Vienna looking for revenge for the UEFA Cup defeat against the same side in 2005.

The Basque side took the lead after nine minutes after Markel Susaeta sent down in the Vienna area. It looked like a dive, but Fernando Llorente showed no mercy from the penalty spot to put his side ahead.

There was no doubt about the second goal, however, as Llorente fired home an unstoppable volley after 24 minutes.

Austria Vienna's Tomas Jun (L) and Petr Vorisek are pictured in front of celebrating players of Athletic Bilbao during their Europa League soccer match at San Mames stadium in Bilbao September 17, 2009.

It could have been 3-0 ten minutes later, but a shot from 16-year-old Iker Munian hit the post. Although Athletic had to thank keeper Gorka Izaizoz after Diabang went clean through for Austria.

Muniain got his reward after 56 minutes after the best move of the game. Llorente, Etxeberria and Andoni Iriola combined to leave the youngster with the easiest of finishes to make it 3-0.

The Basque side's task got even easier after 70 minutes when Marcus Suttner was sent off for a wild challenge on Muniain, but there was no further addition to the score as Athletic chalked up an easy win.

Valencia was the first Spanish side to kick off its European campaign and Unai Emery's side came away from Lille with a 1-1 draw.

Emery left Spain international David Silva back in Spain, while David Villa and Juan Mata began the game on the substitutes' bench.

The Spaniards suffered against the rapid counterattacks of their French rivals in the first half.

However, they looked to have won the match when Mata opened the scoring a minute after going on as a 76th minute substitute. The Spain international clipped the ball over Lille keeper Butelle, a former Valencia player after being put through by Joaquin Sanchez.

Lille leveled the score with just five minutes left on the clock. Bruno failed to clear his lines and Lille striker Gervinho took advantage of a rebound to take a point for his side.

Villarreal's Ivan Marcano (20) and Sebastian Eguren celebrate a goal against Levski Sofia during their Europa League soccer match at Madrigal Stadium in Villarreal September 17, 2009.

Finally a second half strike from Villarreal striker Nilmar gave his side a narrow 1-0 win against Bulgarian outfit Levski Sofia.

The Brazilian, who is the club's record signing, collected a flick from Giuseppe Rossi to fire home the only goal of the game.

Rasmussen blames slow form for early exit at China Masters

Tine Rasmussen of Denmark returns a shot during women's singles second round match against China's Wang Xin at 2009 China Masters in Changzhou, east China's Jiangsu Province, on Sept. 17, 2009. Rasmussen lost 1-2.

CHANGZHOU, Jiangsu Province, Sept. 17 -- Danish star Tine Rasmussen Thursday said she was on way back to top form after she was out of the China Masters badminton super series here.

Rasmussen was met with by far the biggest surprise of the tournament when the third seed surrendered to Chinese qualifier Wang Xin 21-17, 16-21, 14-21 in the second round. She was made sweat in the opening round, scraping through another Chinese qualifier Zhang Yuchun 12-21, 21-15, 21-13. In the second set, Rasmussen seemed to be losing stamina when her 24-year-old rival raced to a 11-4 lead before she saw the left-handed Wang pull off a 6-0 attacking surge in the decisive set.

"It was not a surprise for me because I am not at my highest level after my injury for five months," said the 29-year-old who captured the opening two Super Series titles and became runner up in All England this year before sidelined for five months due to injury.

Obama: Chicago Olympics would make world proud

WASHINGTON, Sept. 16 -- U.S. President Barack Obama promised at White House on Wednesday that his hometown Chicago would make the world proud if the city host the 2016 Summer Games.

U.S. President Barack Obama shows his fencing stance with a plastic sword during a promotion event for Chicago's bid for hosting 2016 Olympic Games on the South Lawn of White House in Washington D.C., Sept. 16 2009.

"Americans, like Chicagoans, -- we don't like to make small plans. We want to dreams big and reach high. We hope deeply. We want these games. And if you choose Chicago, I promise you this: Chicago will make America proud, and America will make the world proud." Obama said.

"Chicago is ready. The American people are ready," he added.

He was joined by first lady Michelle Obama, who will be his ambassador to Copenhagen when the Oct. 2 vote of the International Olympic Committee takes place. One of four finalist cities will get the games: Chicago, Madrid, Tokyo or Rio de Janeiro.

Chicago is in a tough competition with the other three cities. In recent years, heads of state have traveled to the IOC meetings to help seal the deal, such as Tony Blair for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London and Vladimir Putin for the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

"I would make the case in Copenhagen personally," were it not for his quest for health care reform, Obama said. "But the good news is I'm sending a more compelling superstar to represent the city and country we love, and that is our first lady, Michelle Obama."

The Obamas were joined by a host of Olympic athletes and Chicago Mayor Richard Daley. Obama staged an Olympic rally and showed his fencing movement while some of the athletes staged exhibitions on the South Lawn.

Liverpool, Arsenal seal opening win

Liverpool's Steven Gerrard holds off Debrecen's Norbert Meszaros (R) during their Champions League soccer match at Anfield in Liverpool, northern England, September 16, 2009.

LONDON, Sept. 17 -- Dirk Kuyt's goal helped Liverpool sealed a 1-0 victory home in their first Champions League Group E match on Wednesday while Da Silva Eduardo grabbed a late winner for Arsenal to pocket three points in a thrilling Group H opener.

As the first Hungarian team in the group stage of the Champions League for 14 years, Debrecen played amazingly at Anfield with Peter Czvitkovics forcing goalkeeper Jose Reina to make a fine one-hand save.

It was until the last 10 minutes before the break that the Reds found their pace and launched a series of attacks under the maneuver of captain Steven Gerrard and Israeli midfielder Yossi Benayoun.

Albert Riera's two shots were both saved by Poleksic and Gerrard fired wide again and again. But Dutch Kuyt hit it at the stoppage time of the first half when Poleksic could not hold Fernando Torres's low shot after Benayoun's pass.

Lyon also won by a single goal in Group E as they edged out Italian side Fiorentina with Miralem Pjanic's goal with 14 minutes remaining.

Arsenal's Niklas Bendtner reacts after scoring against Standard Liege's during a Champions League soccer match at Sclessin stadium in Liege September 16, 2009.

Arsenal suffered an early two goals down as their Belgian counterpart Standard Liege stunningly scored twice within five minutes.

Eliaquim Mangala shot home at the edge of the box only after two minutes and Milan Jovanovic scored from the penalty spot three minutes later after William Gallas's foul.

Struggling to regain composure, the Gunners were given chances to rebound in the second half as Danish striker Nicklas Bendtner slot home his first goal of the season just before the break.

The equalizer finally came in the 78th minute as defender Thomas Vermaelen scored for the premier league club in his home country. Three minutes later, Eduardo shot in at close range to complete the comeback.

Defending champions Barcelona and the hosts Inter Milan both failed to score in their heavyweight clash while Dynamo Kiev came from behind to beat Rubin Kazan from Russia 3-1 in Group F.

In Group G, Sevilla saw off Romania's Unirea Urziceni 2-1 and Stuttgart were forced a 1-1 draw by visitors Rangers.

Real Madrid flatters to deceive in Zurich triumph

MADRID, Sept. 15 -- Real Madrid had to survive a second half fight back from Swiss side Zurich before claiming all three points in the opening game of the Champions League group stage.

Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates after he scored during their Champions League soccer match against FC Zurich (FCZ) at the Letzigrund Stadium in Zurich September 15, 2009.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored two free kicks, while Raul, Gonzalo Higuain and Guti added further goals in the Spanish side's 5-2 away win.

However, Real Madrid struggling to holding on to a 3-2 lead before Ronaldo and Guti scored late goals to give the final result a healthier look.

After the weekend's 3-0 win away to Espanyol, coach Manuel Pellegrino brought Ronaldo back into the starting 11 along with central defender Pepe.

The Portuguese international was making his first appearance for the club after being banned for 10 Primera Liga matches for aggression at the end of last season.

The first half saw Real Madrid in total control against a rival that was not close to the level of the Spanish side.

The only surprise was that it took Real 26 minutes to open the scoring. Ronaldo fired home a powerful free kick from outside of the penalty area.

It was the first free kick he has scored since his 95 million Euro arrival from Manchester United over the summer.

Raul added a second goal after 34 minutes. Higuain did well to work a chance and all the Real Madrid captain had to do was slot the ball home from close range.

Hannu Tihinen (R) of FC Zurich (FCZ) is challenged by Real Madrid's Kaka during their Champions League soccer match at the Letzigrund Stadium in Zurich September 15, 2009.

Higuain added a third on the stroke of half time. He worked the shooting chance himself and left the Swiss keeper with no chance.

The game looked to be a walkover for Real, but in the second half, Zurich fought back bravely and two goals in the space of a minute got them right back into things.

Things began to go wrong after Xabi Alonso had to leave the pitch with knee injury.

After 64 minutes Xavier Margairaz scored a penalty after Iker Casillas had fouled Alexandre Alphonse and a minute later it was 3-2 after Sylvan Aegerter nodded home from a corner.

That was the sign for Zurich to go all out for the equalizer as Madrid suffered for 25 minutes.

However, Ronaldo's second goal of the night following a disastrous error from Zurich keeper Johnny Leoni, calmed nerves among the Spaniards and Guti's 94th minute goal following a Kaka pass gave the final score a sheen that five minutes earlier had looked unlikely.

"I think Qiu is a little bit nervous today maybe because he wanted to do a good job in his hometown," said Lin, who had scored a badminton grand slam -- winning the Beijing Olympics, three world championships, two Thomas Cup and two Sudirman Cup team events.

"He can do really well when we train in the national team but competition is so much different from practice," he added.

They were followed by sixth-seeded Songphon Anugritayawon/Kunchala Voravichitchaikul from Thailand who lost to Ko Sung Hyun/Ha Jung Eun of South Korea 21-8, 21-17.

2009 South Korean Open bronze medallists Wiratama and Chau from Hong Kong, China were surprised by Chinese teenage pair Chai Biao and Xia Huan 21-17, 21-19 in 30 minutes in the first round of the super series event.

"It is the first time we played this pair," said Chau. Chau and Wiratama, seeded number four here, defeated Chai Biao and Bao Yixin in May's National Games qualifier before they booked a place in the final to be held in October in Shandong province.

Unlike many other Chinese players who took the Masters as a tune-up for the National Games, Chau said it was just a normal tournament for them and complained about the judge.

"I don't think the judges are very good," she said.
