Two American journalists released by DPRK return home

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 5 -- The two female American journalists who had been freed earlier by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) returned to the United States on Wednesday.

Laura Ling and Euna Lee arrived at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank near Los Angeles, escorted by former U.S. president Bill Clinton, who secured their release in a 20-hour visit to Pyongyang.

Laura Ling (R, Back) and Euna Lee (1st L), two freed U.S. journalists, are embraced by their family members after arrive at the airport in Burbank, California, August 5, 2009.

The two journalists returned home amid tears, hugs and expressions of relief that the "nightmare of our lives" was finally over.

Anxiously awaiting them were their families and the founder of the media venture that employs them, former U.S. vice-president Al Gore.

The two women emerged only 25 minutes later from the privately-owned Boeing 737, which belongs to entertainment industry executive Steve Bing, a major contributor to Democratic Party causes and candidates.

Laura Ling (R, Back) and Euna Lee (1st L), two freed U.S. journalists, are embraced by their family members after arrive at the airport in Burbank, California, August 5, 2009.

"Thirty hours ago, Euna Lee and I were prisoners in North Korea. We feared that at any moment we could be sent to a hard labor camp, and then suddenly we were told that we were going to a meeting," said Ling, who was tearful but looked relieved and happy.

"We were taken to a location and when we walked in through the doors, we saw standing before us president Bill Clinton," she said. "We were shocked, but we knew instantly in our hearts that the nightmare of our lives was finally coming to an end. And now, we stand here, home and free."

Speaking for herself and Lee, Ling expressed "our deepest gratitude to (former) president Clinton" and his "supercool team," as well as to President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Gore, Bing, and the Swedish ambassador to Pyongyang, who was involved in the negotiations that produced the former president's visit and the women's release.

Ling said that for her and Lee, their incarceration had represented the "most difficult ... wrenching" time of their lives. She added that they are "grateful that we were granted amnesty by the government of North Korea."

Uncharacteristically self-effacing, Clinton emerged from the plane five minutes after the women, but did not speak.

Obama welcomed the returned of the journalists. "My hope is that the families who have been reunited can enjoy the next several days and weeks, understanding that because of the efforts of (former) president Clinton and (former vice president) Gore, they are able to be with each other once again," Obama said in Washington, D.C..

The 32-year-old Ling, whose parents live in North Hollywood, and the 36-year-old Lee, a Northern California resident, were sentenced to 12 years of hard labor for illegally entering North Korea from China on March 17 while working for San Francisco-based Current TV.

The journalists, who were working on a story about DPRK refugees at the time of their arrest, were granted a "special pardon" on Tuesday, shortly after Clinton arrived in the country and met with DPRK leader Kim Jong Il.

Eto'o fired up for Italian Super Cup in Beijing

BEIJING: Samuel Eto'o is desperate to give his new club Inter Milan instant payback when the Serie A champions take on Italian Cup winners Lazio in the Super Cup at the Bird's Nest on Saturday.

Inter Milan's Samuel Eto'o signs a jersey during a news conference in Beijing August 6, 2009. Inter Milan will take on Italian Cup winners Lazio in the Super Cup soccer tournament at the Beijing Olympic Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest on August 8.

Cameroon international Eto'o moved from European champions Barcelona in a swap deal for Zlatan Ibrahimovic last month and will be out to impress in his first match for Inter against Serie A opposition.

"I really want the Italian Super Cup so much," the 28-year-old told La Gazzetta dello Sport. "Beating Lazio in Beijing would be the best way to pay back right away the faith I've felt in me.

"The club has done a lot for me, I have to pay it back on the field."

Inter coach Jose Mourinho was confident Eto'o, who scored 30 goals in the Spanish league last season, would quickly show his quality in the blue and black stripes of Inter.

"I believe he will play as motivated as every other Inter player in this match on Saturday," he told reporters in Beijing on Wednesday.

"We'll see how he does this week. What I'm sure of is he will definitely be on the pitch."

The Portuguese said all of his four new signings, including striker Diego Milito who scored 24 league goals for Genoa last year, were blending in well at the club.

Mourinho still wants to further strengthen his squad before the new campaign, particularly with a playmaker, but skipper Javier Zanetti is confident they can weather the loss of Ibrahimovic, Italy's top league scorer last year.

"I've never seen such a complete squad - we have alternatives for every role and system of play," he told Gazzetta.

New Lazio coach Davide Ballardini, charged with galvanising the club after a disappointing 10th place last season, also has a motivated new striker in Julio Cruz, who was released by Inter at the end of last season.

The experienced Argentine boosts an already impressive Lazio forward unit boasting Tommaso Rocchi, Pasquale Foggia and Cruz's compatriot Mauro Zarate.

"Nothing is ever certain in football," Rocchi told Gazzetta. "The fact that they are favourites is an advantage for us - we play better when we are under pressure. Last season our most convincing performances were against big teams."

The traditional pre-season encounter brings sport back to the Bird's Nest for the first time since the end of the Paralympics last year, and a 69,000 sell-out is expected.

Cities at night through NASA astronauts' lens on ISS

BEIJING, Aug. 5 -- Astronauts aboard the International Space Station are treated to a spectacular view of cities on Earth lit up at night. But the relative speed of the space station meant any photos taken at night were blurred. In late 2002 and early 2003, however, astronaut Don Pettit, part of Expedition 6, constructed a device called a barn-door tracker using spare parts from around the space station. This moves the camera to compensate for the movement of the Space Station relative to the Earth below, resulting in clearer images.

Since then, a few other crew members have mastered night photography. In late 2007 to early 2008, Expedition 16 Flight Engineer Dan Tani took images of cities with a longer, 400 mm lens.

City lights provide sharp boundaries that delineate the densest concentrations of people, allowing us to assess the effect of urbanisation on the Earth’s ecosystems. Transport corridors and major commercial developments jump out.
