Fisher's heroics put Lakers on brink of championship

Los Angeles Lakers' Derek Fisher passes a ball during a practice for the NBA Finals basketball game series in El Segundo, California June 6, 2009.

BEIJING, June 13 -- The Los Angeles Lakers moved to the brink of their 15th NBA championship on Thursday, capitalizing on the long-range shooting of Derek Fisher to defeat the Orlando Magic 99-91 in overtime.

Fisher hit a 25-foot 3-point shot with 4.6 seconds left in regulation and then nailed a 27-footer with just over 30 seconds left in overtime to give the Lakers a 94-91 lead.

Pau Gasol scored the remaining five points to seal the win.

"On a championship run you're going to have moments where you just make big plays, and tonight was one of them," said Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, who scored 32 points.

"The guys stepped up. That's what the journey is about," he said.

The Lakers lead the best-of-seven series 3-1 and can wrap up their first title since 2002 with a victory tomorrow in Orlando.

Bryant led the Lakers with 32 points but the 11-time All- Star and 2008 Most Valuable Player was not at his best, hitting only 11 of 31 shots.

Gasol and Trevor Ariza each added 16 for Los Angeles.

The Lakers got out of jail when Orlando All-Star center Dwight Howard missed two free throws with 11.1 seconds left in regulation with the Magic leading 87-84.

Had he made even one of the free throws, the Magic would likely have leveled the series at 2-2 and been in the hunt for their first title.

"I just missed them," said Howard, who misfired on eight of his 14 free-throw attempts. "I've been working on my free throws. They just weren't falling.

"There's no need to get down on myself. I think I did a lot of good things tonight, just free throws weren't there. Not just for me but for everybody."

After a time out the Lakers worked the ball upcourt and found Fisher open on the wing, and the veteran left-hander calmly sank the game-tying, three-pointer.

Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said his decision not to foul the Lakers when they were bringing the ball upcourt in the waning seconds of regulation "will haunt me forever." "We gave him so much space to shoot the ball," he said of Fisher's game-tying shot. "We played like we were trying to prevent the lay up. We did a good job, we denied Bryant the ball, and then we just didn't play Derek Fisher, just didn't guard him."

Hedo Turkoglu paced the Magic with 25 points, while Howard added 16 points and 21 rebounds. Orlando committed 17 turnovers and hit only 22 of 37 attempts from the free-throw line.

"We had it but just kind of slipped away because of our stupidness," said Turkoglu. "We can't be really down on ourselves, no matter what. Win or lose tonight, we have to win the game on Sunday."

Ariza scored 13 in the third quarter when the Lakers recovered from a 12-point deficit to take a four-point lead into the final frame.

The Magic went down by six in the final quarter, silencing the crowd of more than 17,000 at the Amway Arena, before rallying down the stretch.

Off the court, a spokesman for former NBA referee Tim Donaghy said Donaghy was attacked in prison by a fellow inmate who claimed he had ties to the New York mob.

The attacker hit Donaghy in the right knee with a stick or club in November at a minimum security federal prison in Pensacola, said Pat Zaranek of Executive Prison Consultants.

Donaghy, who pleaded guilty in New York to conspiracy to engage in wire fraud and transmitting betting information through interstate commence, is serving a 15-month sentence.

"Verbally, there was a comment made that they were going to shoot him in the head and break his knee caps," Zaranek said.

Donaghy said he took thousands of dollars from a professional gambler in exchange for insider tips on NBA games, including some he worked.

United accepts record $131 mln Madrid bid for Ronaldo

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo is seen celebrating after scoring his second goal during their English Premier League soccer match against Aston Villa in Manchester, northern England in this April 5, 2009 file photograph.

BEIJING, June 12 -- Manchester United has agreed to sell Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid for a world record 80 million pounds (131 million U.S. dollars), media reports said Friday.

"Manchester United have received a world-record, unconditional offer of 80 million pounds for Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid," said a statement on the website of Manchester United club, under the headline "Reds accept 80m Ronaldo bid."

The statement continued: "At Cristiano's request - who has again expressed his desire to leave -- and after discussion with the player's representatives, United have agreed to give Real Madrid permission to talk to the player. "Matters are expected to be concluded by 30 June. The club will not comment until further notice."

Real confirmed they had approached United with a bid for Ronaldo but gave no indication of the fee involved.

There was no immediate statement from Real Madrid, but it has been reported in England that Ronaldo, who is currently on holiday in Los Angeles, earlier this year had agreed to a pre-contract with the Spanish club worth 8.3 million pounds a year over the next five years.

Ronaldo, who joined United for 12 million pounds (19.87 million dollars) in 2003, had made it clear he wanted a new challenge after winning the Champions League in 2008.

Deadly beauty - Poisonous mushrooms

BEIJING, June 11 -- Ten types of beautiful mushroom will be shown in following photos. Some of them look really delicious but don't even think of eating them, they are deadly poisonous! Even worms and bugs keep their distance from these angels-of-death.

1. BRAIN MUSHROOM

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Gyromitra esculenta, which is also known as a false morel or brain mushroom (given its convoluted surface), can be deadly when consumed raw. Although some in Spain, Sweden and other countries continue to cook and eat them, G. esculenta is suspected to be moderately toxic. Unlike many other poisonous mushrooms, the Gyromitra genus often causes neurological symptoms—including comas—as well as gastrointestinal indications.

2. DEATH CAP

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

This innocent-looking fungus is responsible for the bulk of mushroom-related deaths across the globe. Not to be mistaken for edible members of the Agaricus clan (including the common white, or button mushroom), the Amanita phalloides (death cap) packs a toxic one-two punch with both phallotoxin and amanitin. As little as one ounce (30 grams)—less than a full mushroom cap—may be enough to kill a person. Symptoms may not appear for eight to 12 hours after consumption, but it can result in liver failure and death within a week.

3. DEATH ANGEL

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

One of the more frequent killers, the Amanita bisporigera—or "death angel"—is white and can be confused with edible varieties, including button and meadow mushrooms. The death angel, however, contains amatoxin, which stops cell metabolism (thereby killing them), usually beginning with the liver and kidneys; it can cause death within days. It is found in North America, whereas its cousin, the A. virosa, is more common in Europe

4. FLY AGARIC

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Fly Agaric, Amanita muscaria, is not as poisonous as the rest mushroom mentioned in this post. People with heart problems however could be killed by it. It is very common in Northern Ireland and should be treated with caution.

5. THE LETHAL WEBCAPS

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The mushrooms' characteristics are quite common, making them difficult to identify, which often leads to fatal poisonings. Young examples of the species often have a veil between the cap of the mushroom and the stem. This veil looks like a cobweb, hence the name. The veil however partially or completely disappears in older specimens. Some other characteristics for each of the mushrooms are given below.

6. AUTUMN SKULLCAP

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Found in temperate areas all over the world, the Galerina marginata (aka autumn skullcap, or deadly galerina) may look like a hallucinogenic fungus from the Psilocybe genus, but it is actually extremely toxic. Unlike the dark brown or lilac spores in the "magic" variety, G. marginata has lighter brown spores. But distinction between the two is not always easy, especially as the small mushrooms can grow in some of the same areas.

7. DESTROYING ANGEL

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Amanita virosa, the European destroying angel (and close relation to North America's toxic A. bisporigera and A. ocreata), warns consumers off with an unpleasant odor. That, however, has not deterred some from tasting its deadly white flesh. The young ones can emerge looking like eggs, which are later topped with a domed cap, making identification even trickier because they can be mistaken for edible puffball or button mushrooms.

8. HOODED FALSE MOREL

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The brown saddle-shaped top might be mistaken for a delicious edible morel (which have to be cooked before eating), but the Gyromitra infula (HOODED FALSE MOREL) contains the toxin gyromitirin, which in the body turns into monomethylhydrazine, an ingredient in some rocket fuels. The G. infula, also known as the hooded false morel, or elfin saddle, may not be as deadly on first consumption as other mushrooms, but its cumulative effects are assumed to be adverse and potentially carcinogenic.

9. MARBLED DEATH CAP

Found in Hawaii, Australia and South Africa, this death cap cousin also contains amatoxins. The Amanita marmorata is often found growing in evergreen Casuarina and eucalyptus forests and is assumed to have been brought to Hawaii from Australia, along with the imported trees.

10. C. ORELLANOIDES (C.speciosissimus)

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Cortinarius speciosissimus is a deadly toxic species, frequently found in Northern Italy; although it grows mainly under conifers (scots pine and spruce), it is also possible to find it under broad-leaved trees: some authors distinguish these collections as Cortinarius orellanoides, a name which we consider as a synonym of the C. speciosissimus. The colours of this fungus are brick orange to rusty orange in every part; the cap is usually conical or distinctly umbonate; the gills are rusty and the stipe shows some typical yellowish veil bands.

Members of the Brazilian legal police carry a body recovered from the ocean during search operations of the missing Air France flight 447 at Recife's airport, Brazil, Wednesday, June 10, 2009.

BRASILIA, June 10 -- The first 16 bodies recovered from the Air France crash have been flown to Brazil's northeastern city of Recife for identification, the Brazilian Air Force said Wednesday.

Upon the arrival of the C-130 transport aircraft, the bodies were taken to a local legal medical institute where forensic experts would begin the identification process, Air Force spokesman Ramon Cardoso said.

Due to a delay of the preliminary identification procedure at the Fernando de Noronha islands plus the bad weather in the area, the military plane took off seven hours later than planned, he said.

According to Cardoso, the identification of each body was expected to take an average of three hours. Dissection of these bodies was expected to start on Thursday.

Another 25 of the recovered bodies would be first taken to the Fernando de Noronha islands and later transferred to Recife.

The identification work at Recife involved 39 Brazilian professionals and seven French experts.

Air France Flight 447, an Airbus 330-200, was traveling from Rio de Janeiro to Paris with 216 passengers and 12 crew members on board when it vanished over the Atlantic Ocean around midnight on May 31.

The Brazilian military search team has recovered 41 bodies from the Atlantic Ocean near the crash site as of Wednesday.
