Los Angeles Angles pitcher killed in car crash

LOS ANGELES, April 9 -- U.S. professional baseball team Los Angeles Angeles lost its starting pitcher Thursday after its player Nick Adenhart was killed in a car crash.

Three persons including the 22-year-old Angeles pitcher were killed early Thursday when a minivan driven by an alleged drunk driver hit their car after running a red light in a Los Angeles suburb, authorities said.

Adenhart, who on Wednesday night started his team's game against the Oakland A's and pitched six shutout innings, was a passenger in a Mitsubishi Eclipse when the collision occurred, according to police.

Thursday night's game between Angels and Oakland was postponed. It was unclear when it might be rescheduled.

Mike Scioscia, manager of Los Angels Angeles, said his team would do its best to move forward from the death of Adenhart.

"We're going to cancel the game, but we'll have the team together this afternoon, and I can't tell you exactly what will happen because I don't think any of us know," Scioscia told a news conference in Anaheim, the team's base city since 1966 when it left Los Angeles.

The Angels signed Adenhart when he was just 18 years old, and he underwent major arm surgery before he ever threw a pitch.

Adenhart made his first Major League start last year against Oakland. At that time, he was the youngest active-roster pitcher in Major League Baseball, according to the Angels.

Adenhart's agent Scott Boras said the young pitcher's stellar performance in Wednesday night's game was a hint of the future he had in baseball.

Guardiola content with Barcelona's Champions league show

MADRID, April 9 -- Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola said that he believed his side had done almost enough to assure a place in the semifinals of the Champions League following a convincing display against German side Bayern Munich.

Two goals from Leo Messi and one each from Samuel Eto'o and Thierry Henry gave Barcelona a 4-0 win on Wednesday night.

That result means Bayern would have to score five goals without reply in the return leg next week to knock the Catalans out of the competition.

Barcelona produced a brilliant first half performance and if Guardiola's side relaxed slightly in the second half, it was mainly to reserve energy for this weekend's Primera Liga match against Recreativo Huelva.

"It is a good result and it shows the way that we have to go forward," said Guardiola in his post-match press conference, published on the official club website.

However, Guardiola tried to avoid a false sense of overconfidence following the game, the performance and the result.

"The Germans can still give us a lot of problems. They send over a lot of long passes, they are motivated and they all work hard. We have to go to Munich with the idea of scoring a goal.

"We will still have to do a lot of running and we still have to make an effort, first of all to qualify for the semi-final and then to beat whoever we play."

Guardiola will have to watch the second leg from the stands after his protests over a possible penalty committed in Leo Messi earned him a sending off from English referee Howard Webb.

"It was a clear penalty, but the coach should be able to control his reaction and I didn't do that. I deserve the sanction that I will receive," he commented.

Following Wednesday night's games, it looks as if Barcelona will play Chelsea in the semi-finals after Chelsea won its first leg tie 3-1 away to Liverpool.
