Israel tests Arrow anti-missile system

A graphic illustration released by the Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) on April 7, 2009 shows the Arrow ballistic missile interception system in a test against a simulated missile attack. Israel on Tuesday successfully intercepted a target simulant of an Iranian missile in a test of its Arrow anti-missile system.

JERUSALEM, April 7 -- Israel on Tuesday successfully intercepted a target simulant of an Iranian missile in a test of its Arrow anti-missile system, reported local daily Ha'aretz.

During the test, the target missile, simulating an Iranian Shehab, was launched by Israel's air forces over the Mediterranean Sea, before it was intercepted, an unnamed defense official was quoted as saying.

Over a dozen tests have so far been carried out on the Arrow system, which was co-funded by Israel and the United States and designed to shield the Jewish state from possible ballistic missile attacks by Iran and Syria, reported Israel Radio, adding that 90 percent of the tests are successful.

Late last month, Israel successfully completed a series of tests on its Iron Dome anti-rocket system, which is aimed to protect its citizens from possible rocket fire from Lebanon in the north and from the Gaza Strip in the south.

The two systems are major components of the multi-layer air defense system Israel is trying to build. Defense Minister Ehud Barak said last month that Israel aims at "reaching the stage in which a clear majority of missiles do not reach their targets."

IOC evaluation team concludes inspection of Chicago

CHICAGO, April 7 -- The evaluation team of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) concluded its inspections of Chicago Tuesday, saying the city's bid for the 2016 Olympic Summer Games is strong.

At a press conference here at the end of its five-day inspection, the members of the team in their only public comments about Chicago's Olympic bid spoke highly of the city's plans to host the 2016 Summer Games.

Nawal El Moutawakel, chairwoman of the 13-member evaluation commission, said the team is impressed by the strong support for bidding the games shown by the U.S. government, the Chicago city and the residents in the city.

"The commission leaves with a very strong impression that the bid is a strong bid," said Moutawakel, a former Olympian from Morocco. "But in the end, there is only one winner."

When asked about Chicago's lack of a blanket guarantee to cover the costs of the Games, IOC official Gilbert Felli said all of the bid cities are facing economic difficulties in the current economic recession. "We all are facing the same issues in the world today," Felli said.

And part of the analysis the evaluation team will undertake is to "evaluate risk" in comparing Chicago's financial guarantees against those of the other cities, which all have government guarantees that the costs will be covered.

Felli noted the team was impressed by the support of "business heavyweights" from Chicago's corporate community, with whom the commission met Monday.

Corporate sponsorships make up a significant piece of the Olympic revenue pie. Chicago bid officials continue to hope their bid will be aided by the fact that revenue from Games held in the U.S. exceeds that of other nations.

Chicago 2016 organizers put the price tag on hosting the Olympics at 4.8 billion U.S. dollars. They say they'll seek private contributions to cover the costs.

The Chicago bid committee has a financial safety net that includes a 450 million-U.S.-dollar "rainy day fund, 375 million U.S. dollars in IOC cancellation insurance, another 500 million U.S. dollars in insurance coverage and a "last-resort" of 500 million U.S. dollars guarantee of taxpayer money from the city of Chicago. The Illinois state also has put up a guarantee of 250 million U.S. dollars for the games.

Chicago's bid for the Games has a powerful new supports from the government as the White House announced Monday that it will create a special office to serve as liaison if the city gets the bid.

"By hosting the games, we will provide a lasting legacy of investment and economic growth in our city and help strengthen the Olympic Movement," said Chicago Mayor Richard Daley.

Melzer beats Kendrick in Houston

BEIJING, April 8 -- Third-seeded Jurgen Melzer of Austria rallied to beat Robert Kendrick of the United States 6-1, 7-5 in the first round of the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships in Houston on Monday.

Melzer pounced on Kendrick's serve in the first set but couldn't maintain the pace. Kendrick took advantage by breaking the Austrian in the first and seventh games of the second set to take a 5-2 lead.

It appeared the match was headed for a third set before Melzer broke back in the eighth game when Kendrick double-faulted and hit an unforced backhand error on the final two points.

Kendrick then double-faulted at break point in the 10th game and fought off one match point in the final game before he hit a backhand into the net on the final point.

"I started rushing. I tried to do too much too early," Melzer said. "On hard court, you have one, two shots in a point. Here, you have to try to be mentally alert."

Melzer lost early at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami last week and had little time to adjust to the slower clay courts at River Oaks. He was a US Clay Court finalist in 2006 at Houston's Westside Tennis Club, losing to Mardy Fish.

"I felt if I played my game and stayed focused, I would get through," Melzer said. "But he is a good shot maker and it's tough on clay the first time. It's a matter of playing as many shots at the start and I finally found a good rhythm."

Melzer escaped a double break in the fourth game of the opening set to hold serve. Kendrick didn't win a point in serving the fifth game and Melzer broke him again in the seventh game with a forehand winner to wrap up the first set.

In Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, fourteen-year-old Madison Keys made her WTA Tour debut a memorable one, upsetting Russia's Alla Kudryavtseva 7-5, 6-4 on Monday in the opening round of The MPS Group Championships.

The American fell behind 5-2 in the first set but used powerful ground strokes to break Kudryavtseva twice and a serve that averaged 162.5kph to win the set.

Keys lost the first game of the second set before going on a four-game run, and after the 81st-ranked Kudryavtseva fought back to 4-5, Keys won the set with an ace.

"The first two or three games I was nervous," she said. "It was kind of just the first few games of just hitting the ball and feeling it and really getting into a rhythm that made me feel a lot better."

The youngster could face the tournament's top-seeded player, ninth-ranked Nadia Petrova, in the second round.

In other early matches, Kateryna Bondarenko of the Ukraine beat Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic 7-6 (2), 6-2.

Briton McIlroy leads teenage parade

BEIJING, April 8 -- Briton Rory McIlroy leads an infusion of young blood into the season's first major championship as one of three teenagers making their U.S. Masters debuts Thursday.

Rory McIlroy of Nortern Ireland hits his tee shot on the first hole during a practice round for the 2009 Masters golf tournament at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, April 7, 2009.

The 19-year-old from Northern Ireland is the oldest of a teen trio, including 18-year-old US Amateur champion Danny Lee of New Zealand and 17-year-old Ryo Ishikawa from Japan.

"I think it's great for the tournament and for golf in general," McIlroy told a news conference in Augusta, Georgia, on Monday.

"You look at Ryo Ishikawa, he's won twice on the Japan Tour, once as an amateur, and Danny Lee, won the US Amateur last year and on the European Tour this year, and myself.

"It's great for golf. Hopefully it inspires people that are not that much younger than us to take up golf and try and one day emulate what we have done."

McIlroy, ranked 17th in the world with a win at this year's European Tour Dubai Desert Classic, said the trio had been inspired by top-ranked Tiger Woods.

"We can relate to him in a way, especially that first Masters," said McIlroy, who was mobbed by fans clamoring for autographs as he made his way to practice on Monday.

"He was only 21 and you could sort of relate to someone that age. You were thinking to yourself, 'Well, hopefully when I'm that age, I can do something like that'."

Woods shot a record low total, won by a record 12 shots and became the youngest champion when he won in 1997 in his first Masters as a professional.

"It was definitely inspirational to see someone come out and make such a great start to their professional career. That's what I've always wanted to do. You know, if I can play well enough this week, I might be able to emulate it."

McIlroy, a golf prodigy whose amateur successes at a young age drew comparisons with Woods, said he was thrilled to be at Augusta but not overwhelmed.

"It's been a dream of mine for a long time to be able to play in the Masters, and for that dream to finally come true is a pretty special feeling," said McIlroy, who practiced at Augusta last Sunday before returning for Masters week.

"I thought I would be nervous hitting my first shot here. Maybe if I was a little younger...I would have been in awe of the place.

"But having been on tour now for a year and a half, I'm not really one to get overwhelmed by much these days.

"I don't feel like a 19-year-old. I feel like I've matured very quickly since coming on tour, and I'm sure Danny and Ryo will tell you the same thing."

It is rare for the Masters to have three teenagers in the field, but the youth movement goes beyond them. Over the last year, especially with Woods taking an eight-month break from golf because of knee surgery, more younger players are starting to thrive. Two of whom stand out.

Anthony Kim, 23, won twice on the PGA Tour last year and was the inspirational leader on a US team that finally won the Ryder Cup; and Dustin Johnson, 24, earned his first trip to the Masters by winning at Pebble Beach, his second PGA Tour victory.

Cruzeiro wins 7-2, advances to semis

RIO DE JANEIRO, April 5 -- In a game that saw eight goals scored in the second half, Cruzeiro convincingly beat Tupi 7-2 on Sunday, reported the local media on Monday.

In the last round of play in the Minas Gerais state championship, the team needed to win in order to advance to the semifinals. Doing just that, they will face the winner of Democrata-GV and Ituiutaba.

The only goal in the first half came from Cruziero's Kleber, who scored three goals in Sunday's match. On a penalty call after Goncalves took down Marquinhos Parana in front of the goal, Klebertook the responsibility of taking the penalty kick and did not disappoint.

The second half saw a flurry of goals. Cruzeiro scored the first three goals of the half in the 9th, 18th and 25th minutes of the second half. Kleber, Ramires and Fabricio were the respective authors of the initial barrage.

Tupi was able to cut the lead down when they scored two consecutive goals. In the 25th minute of play, Noel crossed the ball towards the front of the Cruzeiro net. Cruzeiro's Fabricio attempted to head the ball out of bounds, but the ball deflected off the player's head and into his own goal.

In the 27th minute, taking command of a free kick, Hugo blasted the ball past the Cruzeiro defensive wall and into the back of the net.

Cruzeiro would add another three goal assault before the end. In the 29th minute, Ramires passed the ball off to a wide-open Kleber. Kleber took his time to control the ball and loft it over the diving Tupi goalkeeper.

In the 42nd minute, Marquinhos Parana crossed the ball to Ramires who headed the ball into the back of the Tupi net. Closing out the embarrassment, Marquinhos Parana scored in the 46th minute of the second half after taking advantage of a loose rebound in front of the Tupi net.

Before Cruzeiro begins their preparation for the semifinals of the Minas Gerais state tournament next weekend, they will focus their attention on their Libertadores Cup mid-week match against the Argentinean team of Estudiantes. Kleber will be unable to play in the game due to a suspension that he has to serve in the continental tournament.

Chicago promotes Blue-Green Games

CHICAGO, April 6 -- Chicago 2016 Olympic bidding team told the visiting evaluation delegation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Moday that the city would host the most environmentally friendly games ever if Chicago gets the 2016 bid.

As Chicago continues to make its pitch for the summer Olympics, organizers are pushing a theme: the blue-green games.

Chicago's presenters say they are confident that Lake Michigan, the parks and overall environmental quality is helping Chicago shed the rust-belt image that some members of the international evaluation team had.

Robert Accarino, director of environment for Chicago 2016, said, "we focused on number one, renewable energy and reducing carbon footprint associated with the games here."

However, he said, renewable energy that we would use during the games has not been determined simply because the games still would be seven, eight years away from now.

Robinho cleared of rape charges

RIO DE JANEIRO, April 6 -- The Brazilian soccer star playing for Manchester City, Robinho, was cleared on Monday from charges of rape dating back to January of this year.

After an initial investigation by the England police, the player's case of sexual aggression towards a university student was dropped.

However, complicating things for the player, the student had on her camera a picture of her alongside Robinho. He was ordered to cooperate with the investigation and offer a sample of his DNA.

The English police had plans of apprehending the player when all of the sudden he took a surprise trip to his native country. They player declared that he had come back to Brazil in order to get a check-up on a nagging injury.

With a great weight off his shoulders, Robinho hopes to concentrate fully in soccer.

Australia's rugby player Mackay succumbs in hospital

Australia's Shawn Mackay scores a try against South Africa in their quarterfinal match in Commonwealth Games Rugby sevens in Melbourne March 17, 2006.

Mackay had woken up from a medically-induced coma last week and started communicating with doctors and family through blinking after undergoing surgery to his spine.

Mackay's parents, John and Leonie Mackay, and girlfriend flew to South Africa last week to be by his side.

Brumbies spokesman David Pembroke said Mackay's condition had taken a turn for the worse overnight before he passed away early yesterday.

"(The feeling in Canberra) is one of complete devastation," said Pembroke, adding that the players, who were flying back from South Africa, had yet to be informed.

"It was bad enough that he was injured, but for this to happen is just devastating, not only for the club but for the entire rugby community," he said.

"He was just a wonderful bloke to have as part of the team."

His death had come despite showing "positive signs of recovery," Brumbies Rugby CEO Andrew Fagan told the club's Website.

"Shawn contracted an infection of his bloodstream after his surgery. He deteriorated rapidly, and suffered a cardiac arrest from which he didn't recover," Fagan said.

"This is devastating news for his family and for all of us in the Brumbies community. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this difficult time."

Australian Rugby Union chief executive John O'Neill said Mackay was "a credit to the game of rugby, and much loved by all who knew him."

Mackay, 26, was recruited by the Brumbies this season after spending the past five years playing rugby league in Sydney.

He was selected as a reserve for the Brumbies against the Sharks but came off the bench to play in his team's 14-35 loss in their Super 14 match last month.

He was struck by a car while returning to the hotel with teammates in the early hours of the morning.

The Brumbies defeated the Cheetahs 40-27 in their Super 14 match in Bloemfontein on Saturday, despite news of Mackay's condition clouding preparations.
