BEIJING, Dec. 6 -- Former world and Olympic champion hurdler Liu Xiang has undergone successful surgery for a foot injury that forced him to withdraw at the starting line during the Beijing Olympics.

Dr. Tom Clanton said Friday that the 25-year-old Liu had four small pieces of bone removed from the Achilles' tendon in his right foot in a one-hour operation at the Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center in Houston.

Clanton, who operated on Houston Rockets center Yao Ming's injured foot earlier this year, says Liu will fully recover.

Liu, the 2004 Olympic champion and former world record holder for the 110-meter hurdles, developed bone spurs between the Achilles' tendon and ankle bone. Other treatments, including traditional Chinese medicine and deep massage, failed to help.

Report:Long-term health problems linked with traumatic brain injuries

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- A number of U.S. veterans coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan suffered long-term health problems linked with traumatic brain injuries (TBI), said a government report released on Friday.

These problems include dementia, aggression and depression and symptoms similar to those seen in Parkinson's disease, said the report by the government's Institute of Medicine committee.

In an effort to detail the long-term consequences of TBI, the committee looked at almost 2,000 studies on the subject.

The committee found evidence of a causal relationship between penetrating TBI and unprovoked seizures as well as death, and between severe or moderate TBI with unprovoked seizures.

There was "sufficient" evidence of an association between TBI and decline in neurocognitive function, long-term unemployment and problems with social relationships; Alzheimer's-like dementia, endocrine dysfunction, depression, aggressive behavior, memory problems and early death, said the report.

There was "limited/suggestive" evidence of an association between moderate or severe TBI and diabetes or psychosis; and between mild TBI and visual problems, dementia, post-traumatic stress disorder and suicide, the report said.

"Inadequate/insufficient" evidence existed on the relationship between moderate or severe TBI and brain tumors; mild TBI and employment and social functioning problems, bipolar disorder or attempted suicide; TBI and multiple sclerosis or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease), according to the report.

The current U.S. conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, which have been ongoing since Oct. 7, 2001 and March 2003, respectively, differ vastly from previous combat deployments in terms of injuries sustained. They differ even from injuries seen in the 1991 war, with more deaths, multiple traumas and more TBI, said the report.

According to the Department of Defense, more than 5,500 soldiers had suffered TBIs as of January 2008, accounting for about 22 percent of all casualties, as compared with only 12 percent to 14 percent of all combat casualties during the Vietnam War.

USCBC: Fifth SED with China leaves solid platform for Obama administration

·Part of Paulson's legacy "will be the creation of a high-level dialogue," said USCBC President Frisbie.
·The past few months have reminded us that our economies are greatly interdependent, he said.
·Success for each of us in the years ahead will require more engagement and cooperation, he said

WASHINGTON, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- The fifth U.S.-China Strategic Economic Dialogue (SED) leaves a solid platform for the Obama administration to build upon in its economic and commercial engagement with China, U.S.-China Business Council (USCBC) President John Frisbie said Friday.

Part of Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson's legacy "will be the creation of a high-level, forward-looking dialogue between the United States and what will soon be the world's second-largest economy, China," said Frisbie in a statement.

"The past few months have reminded us that our economies are greatly interdependent, and success for each of us in the years ahead will require more engagement and cooperation, not less," he noted.

"This was the fifth high-level meeting, and the lesson we can draw is that progress comes through a patient process of building one success upon another," said Frisbie. "Through this approach, the future holds great hope of continued advancement on issues important to U.S. interests."

China and the United States started their two-day fifth SED in Beijing Thursday. The two sides made many agreements on energy and environmental topics, global economic and financial cooperation, consumer safety, bilateral investment issues, and other areas.

Initiated by the two presidents in 2006, the twice-yearly SED is the highest-level among the existing China-U.S. dialogue and consultation mechanisms.

China is the third-largest export market for U.S. products and services, and U.S. exports to China are growing far faster than U.S. exports to other major trading partners. U.S. exports to China were up 17 percent through September of this year.

"China remains a source of growth for our manufacturers at a time when we face economic challenges on many other fronts," said Frisbie.

"We need to continue to develop these opportunities for our companies and workers, while at the same time we engage with China to remove trade barriers and integrate Beijing into the rules-based international economy," he noted. "The SED can help do just that, and the U.S.-China Business Council encourages the Obama administration to build upon its success."

The USCBC is the leading organization of U.S. companies engaged in business with China. Founded in 1973, the USCBC provides extensive China-focused information, advisory, and advocacy services, along with events, to roughly 250 U.S. corporations operating within the United States and throughout Asia.

O.J. Simpson sentenced to lengthy prison term

Simpson was sentenced Friday to at least nine years in prison for the kidnapping and robbery in 2007.
·He would be eligible for parole in 2017.
·The maximum time that the 61-year old man could serve is 33 years.

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- O.J. Simpson, a former football star acquitted of murder by a jury 14 years ago, was sentenced on Friday to at least nine years in prison for the kidnapping and robbery last year of two sports memorabilia dealers in Las Vegas.

Under the sentence handed down by Judge Jackie Glass at Clark County District Court in Las Vegas, Simpson, 61, would be eligible for parole in 2017. The maximum time he could serve is 33 years, at which time he would be 94 years old.

Simpson was found guilty of kidnapping two sports dealers and robbing them of sports memorabilia and other mementos in a Las Vegas hotel room on Sept. 13, 2007.

In a rambling, five-minute plea for leniency, Simpson said he went to the down-market hotel in an effort to recover family heirlooms, including his slain ex-wife's wedding ring, to pass down to his children. He insisted the items, which included his first wife's wedding ring, had been stolen from him.

"I didn't mean to steal anything from anybody ... I'm sorry. I'm sorry for all of it," Simpson said, choking back tears.

Glass, who presided over Simpson's trial, testily rejected his protestations.

"When you take a gun with you and you take men with you in a show of force, that is not just a 'Hey, give me my stuff back.' That's something else and that's what happened here," the judge said.

Simpson was acquitted by a jury in the slaying of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman in 1995, although many in the public judged Simpson guilty.

In passing down the sentence on Friday, Glass said several times that the sentence in the Las Vegas case had nothing to do with Simpson's 1995 acquittal.

"I'm not here to try and cause any retribution or any payback for anything else," Glass said. But Goldman's father, Fred Goldman, and sister, Kim, said they were delighted with the sentence.

"We are thrilled, and it's a bittersweet moment," Fred Goldman said. "It was satisfying seeing him in shackles like he belongs."

Simpson's defense had asked for what they said was the most lenient sentence possible -- six to 17 1/2 years in prison. State parole authorities had recommended at least 18 years in prison.

U.S. jobless rate rises to highest level in 15 years

A homeless man cadges on a street of Manhattan, New York, the United States of America, Nov. 11, 2008. The unemployment rate in the United States rose to 6.7 percent in November, the highest level in 15 years, as employers slashed 533,000 jobs, the most since December 1974, the Labor Department reported Friday. (Xinhua Photo)

WASHINGTON, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- The unemployment rate in the United States rose to 6.7 percent in November, the highest level in 15 years, as employers slashed 533,000 jobs, the most since December 1974, the Labor Department reported Friday.

Employers have cut jobs each month this year. Job losses in September and October turned out to be much worse. Employers cut 403,000 jobs in September, versus 284,000 previously reported, and axed 320,000 in October, compared with an initial estimate of 240,000.

Since the start of the recession in December 2007, as recently announced by the National Bureau of Economic Research, employment has fallen by 1.9 million. Two-thirds of the losses occurred in the past three months.

The unemployment rate of 6.7 percent, which followed a 6.5 percent rate in October, has surpassed the high seen after the last recession in 2001. The jobless rate peaked at 6.3 percent in June 2003.

Economists had been expecting the jobless rate to climb to 6.8 percent and employers to cut 320,000 jobs in November.

Job losses were large and widespread across the major industry sectors last month.

Factories cut 85,000 jobs, construction companies axed 82,000 jobs, retailers cut payrolls by 91,000, professional and business services reduced employment by 101,000, financial activities cut 32,000 jobs, and leisure and hospitality axed 76,000 positions.

The reductions offset an employment gain of 34,000 in health care.

The new figures released by the Labor Department showed that the employment market, which is critical for the overall economy to grow, has been deteriorating at an alarmingly rapid clip.

Embattled by a housing collapse, mounting foreclosures and credit tightening, employers could cut back on hiring further. Many economies expect the unemployment rate to climb to 8 percent, possibly higher, next year.

Canadians split over political crisis

OTTAWA, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- Canadian are deeply divided in their opinions about the political storm that has waged over the past week, with new polls showing deepening regional tension especially between the west and the east.

Governor General Michaelle Jean granted a request Thursday from Prime Minister Stephen Harper to prorogue Parliament until the end of January, allowing the Conservative government to sidestep a confidence motion next week that would have likely seen its fall.

The suspension of Parliament happened after the three opposition parties reached an unprecedented agreement to form a coalition government to replace Harper's government, which they said have lost the confidence of the House of Commons.

The proposed coalition, the first of its kind in the country's history, has sparked hot debate across Canada, with opponents accusing the oppositions of staging a "power grab" or even a "coup" while supporters seeing it as totally in accord with Canada's parliamentary system.

The oppositions have maintained they have the full right to govern if the government has lost the confidence of the House of Commons, while the Conservatives have argued that a government can only be produced by an election.

While recent polls have shown a majority of Canadian, less than 60 percent opposed the coalition, a considerable population still supported it, suggesting the deep division among the public on this fundamental constitutional question, especially between the French-speaking Quebec and the west.

A poll by Strategic Counsel, released Friday, showed while nationally, 58 percent support the coalition as compared to 37 percent opposing it, in Quebec, 55 percent support the Liberal-NDP coalition and in the west only 24 percent support it.

Meanwhile, 39 percent of Quebecers opposed the coalition while a whopping 72 percent of people in the west were against it.

In another poll released by Ipsos-Reid, 60 percent opposed replacing the government with Liberal-NDP coalition supported by the Bloc Quebecois, compared with 37 percent who favored the idea. Support for the coalition was highest in Quebec at 50 percent, followed by 44 percent in Atlantic Canada.

Peter Donolo of the Strategic Counsel polling firm said the poll results show a rare "dramatic regional division since the Meech Lake crisis of the Mulroney government when the fabric of the country was really being torn."

That deep rift in regional sentiment is a more difficult hurdle than the current political uncertainty, for the government to overcome, Donolo said.

"That's the more serious, substantive crisis -- the unity crisis. And I think it's reflected in these numbers and that's what (Harper) is going to have to deal with moving forward."

Canadians are equally divided as to who should be to blame for the crisis, with the Strategic poll showing 45 percent blaming the Conservatives and 40 percent the oppositions, while the Ipsos-Reid showing the population divided almost evenly between blaming the government and the opposition parties.

However, both polls show that now a majority of Canadian are throwing their support for the Conservatives if an election is held. The Ipsos-Reid poll gave 46 percent while the Strategic Counsel 45 percent, well above the 40 percent, which is the least necessary.

Forget the IOC. London needs a new Games

suppose that anyone with the title of Olympics Minister is bound to go over the top. But Tessa Jowell excelled herself on Wednesday when she described the London Olympic Games as “gold dust... economic gold in a time of economic need”. This was two days after The Times had revealed the hushing up by ministers of a detailed Downing Street report in 2002, which forecast that there would be little economic upside to staging the Games, and no impact on the numbers of people playing sport. Ministers were told that their best hope was that the Games would be a morale-boosting party. They made the bid three months later. To describe a project costing £9.3 billion as “gold dust” is the kind of idiocy people spout once they become courtiers to the International Olympic Committee.

Ferguson surprised by Keane exit

LONDON, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted he is surprised by Roy Keane's sudden exit from Sunderland, the PA said.

Ferguson had been looking forward to welcoming his old captain to Old Trafford on Saturday as the Black Cats look to climb out of the relegation zone.

Instead former Red Devils reserve-team boss Ricky Sbragia will be in charge after chairman Niall Quinn failed to talk Keane out of quitting the Wearside hot-seat.

Ferguson was saddened at the news and feels Keane's absence is a blow to the Barclays Premier League.

"I am surprised," said the United chief.

"Trying to cut through rumour and fact in football today is difficult.

"You are never quite sure what has happened and the rumour mill is operating at 100 miles an hour.

"But Roy was a great player here and it is a pity. We wish him well."

Ferguson has no idea when, or indeed if, Keane will return to the management ranks.

"It is difficult to say whether he will be back," said the Scot.

"He is an incredibly controversial character. Every week he always had something to say about the game. He was the same as a player.

"He is such an interesting character and did a decent job up there."

Hamburg, Villa and Ajax advance to knockout round

BEIJING, Dec. 6 -- Hamburg led a trio of former European champion into the UEFA Cup knockout phase on Thursday and previous winner Valencia also secured a last 32 place.

Aston Villa and Ajax Amsterdam progressed from Group F along with Hamburg, whose 2-0 victory at Slavia Prague meant Villa qualified despite a 1-2 home defeat by Slovakia's Zilina.

Ajax did not play on Thursday but its six-point haul ensures the four-time European champion will be in the first knockout round draw.

Valencia, the 2004 UEFA Cup winner, progressed from Group G after a 1-1 draw at home to Club Bruges.

VfL Wolfsburg and Braga qualified from Group E, joining favorite AC Milan, CSKA Moscow, Manchester City, St Etienne, Udinese, Galatasaray, Standard Liege, Twente Enschede and Metalist Kharkiv who had already reached the last 32.

CSKA's Brazilian striker Vagner Love hit a hat-trick, including an 88th-minute winner to secure a 4-3 victory at AS Nancy, as the 2005 UEFA Cup winners ended its Group H campaign with a perfect record of four wins from four matches.

Love, who scored in the 2005 final win over Sporting, is the leading marksman in this season's competition with eight goals.

Aston Villa rested a host of regulars for Zilina's visit to Birmingham and the Slovakians took full advantage to register their only win in four group games.

Goals in quick succession early in the first half from Vladimir Leitner, who was later sent off, and Peter Styvar stunned the hosts. Villa's only reply came from 17-year-old striker Nathan Delfouneso, who was making his first start.

Defeat for Villa was academic as a goal in each half from Ivica Olic and Mladen Petric secured Hamburg's victory over Slavia in the Czech capital and left Martin Jol's side, Villa and Ajax all with an unassailable six points.

Hamburg's Bundesliga rival Wolfsburg showed why it is a strong force at home by coming from 1-2 down to beat English Premier League side Portsmouth 3-2.

Wolfsburg is now unbeaten in its last six European home games and has won six out of seven Bundesliga matches at its own stadium this season.

Bosnian duo Edin Dzeko and Zvjezdan Misimovic got two of their three goals with Misimovic handed a 74th-minute winner on a plate by England goalkeeper David James who gave the midfielder possession with an empty net to aim at.

James atoned for his mistake by saving a Misimovic penalty but the loss eliminated Portsmouth from the competition as Braga took the third qualifying place in the group with a 2-1 win over Heerenveen in the Netherlands.

The remaining nine qualifying places up for grabs will be decided in the last round of group games on December 17 and 18.

The top three in each of the eight groups advance to the knockout phase and will be joined in the last 32 by the eight clubs who finish third in the Champions League group stage.

The UEFA Cup final is in Istanbul on May 20.

BEIJING, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese official said here on Thursday that China and the United States have reached consensus in five major areas to step up energy and environmental protection cooperation during the on-going fifth round of the Strategic Economic Dialogue (SED).

Zhang Xiaoqiang, vice minister in charge of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), said the five areas are as follows.

First, the SED completed preparations to start cooperation in five areas: electricity, clean water, clean transportation, clean air and the conservation of forest and wetland ecosystems, mapping out plans and roadmaps.

China and the United States signed a 10-year energy and environmental protection cooperation framework in June during the fourth SED held in Washington, with these five areas as initial goals.

Second, both sides agreed that energy efficiency would be the sixth initial goal.

Third, the SED achieved agreement on a framework document for the green partnership project under the 10-year cooperation framework. It will be formally signed by Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan and U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson.

Fourth, institutions including China's NDRC and the China Exim Bank, as well as the U.S. Trade and Development Agency and the Export-Import Bank of the United States, will sign a memorandum of understanding on measures to support the 10-year energy cooperation.

Fifth, seven eco-partnerships from the two countries will sign letters of intent on cooperation. These agreements include one involving China's southwestern Chongqing Municipality, the U.S. city of Denver and car maker Ford on an electric and hybrid automobile project.

The two-day SED, which is to end on Friday, also covers macro-economic risks, trade challenges and the investment environment.

Investor against selling Yahoo piecemeal

A man drives a Mini Cooper with a Yahoo! logo in front of Yahoo! headquarters in Sunnyvale, California, Feb. 1, 2008. Billionaire investor Carl Icahn has voiced opposition to attempts by AOL veteran Jonathan Miller or anyone else acquiring Yahoo Inc. piecemeal, it was reported on Thursday.

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Billionaire investor Carl Icahn has voiced opposition to attempts by AOL veteran Jonathan Miller or anyone else acquiring Yahoo Inc. piecemeal, it was reported on Thursday.

Icahn, who is a Yahoo board member, said in an interview that he would oppose selling just more than half of Yahoo's Web portal because he insisted that its shares are undervalued, the San Francisco Chronicle said.

He speculated that Yahoo's board would agree with him. But Icahn added that management would consider a bid for the entire company if the offer was high enough, according to the paper.

"Obviously, if somebody wanted to make a bid at a very high price, the board has to listen to it," Icahn said.

Icahn's comments came a day after a Wall Street Journal report that Miller was talking to private equity investors about raising up to 30 billion U.S. dollars to buy Yahoo. The emergence of the former AOL executive as a potential suitor marks another dramatic turn for Yahoo in a year punctuated by failed takeover talks with Microsoft Corp., the pending resignation of CEO Jerry Yang and a plummeting stock price.

Yahoo's shares have been in a tailspin since Microsoft withdrew a 33-dollar per-share takeover bid in July, closing Wednesday at 11.50 dollars, placing the company's market capitalization at 16 billion dollars.

Huntelaar: I'm at the best club in the world

MADRID, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- New Real Madrid signing Klaas-Jan Huntelaar said on Thursday that he was joining the best football club in the world.

The Dutch striker, who cost Real Madrid around 20 million euros (25.6 million U.S. dollars) from Ajax, was officially presented at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Thursday lunchtime.

Real Madrid's new soccer player Klaas Jan Huntelaar of the Netherlands holds up his t-shirt during his presentation ceremony at Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid Dec. 4, 2008.

"I have come to the best football club in the world and I am going to try and score as many goals as possible," said Huntelaar.

Huntelaar is the sixth Dutch player in the Real Madrid squad and as a result, he doesn't foresee any problems settling into a new dressing room.

"I think it is going to be easy to integrate here. There are a lot of players from Holland and some of them (Wes Sneijder) played alongside me at Ajax," he explained.

The striker will cover for the injured Ruud Van Nistelrooy, who will miss the campaign with a knee problem. But Huntelaar admitted that whatever happened, he already had a ticket to join Real Madrid.

"I have spoken to a lot of people and they all have shown me how much the club wants me to be here. I was going to come here at the end of the season, but it has been brought forward because of injuries," he said.

Financial tsunami teaches us not to put all our eggs in one basket

HONG KONG, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- "The Financial tsunami teaches us not to put all our eggs in one basket," Hong Kong Trade Development Council (TDC) Executive Director Fred Lam said in a recent exclusive interview with Xinhua.

Lam said the financial tsunami exposed the over-reliance of the Hong Kong economy on exports to the United States, the European Union and Japan, which accounted for 60 percent of Hong Kong's consumer product export to other economies.

Lam said the TDC estimate that the crisis could last 18 to 24 months, and that the two quarters of 2009 would be the toughest time for international trade.

"We will not see positive signs take helm until the end of first half," he said.

Lam said the impact of the current crisis on Hong Kong exports was much larger than the Asian financial storm in 1998 and the SARS outbreak in 2003, with the impact of the former largely confined to Asia and the latter having limited impact on Hong Kong's export, which was still growing in 2003.

DOWNWARD ADJUSTMENT OF EXPORT GROWTH FORECASTS

Lam said the TDC has recently adjusted the Hong Kong 2008 export growth forecast downward to 5.5 percent from 7-7.5 percent, which was put forward in spring.

TDC statistics show Hong Kong's exports to the United States began to decline around August and September, coupled with an equally negative performance in export to Japan in recent months and modest growth in exports to the European Union.

Positive growth in export growth in October, at 9 percent, was better than expected but does not represent the whole picture of Hong Kong trade because quite a chunk of its exports to the mainland, Hong Kong's largest trading partner, was components and parts for export manufacturing. In 2009 export decrease was possible, he said.

"We have yet to give a qualitative projection for 2009, but we are prepared for bad numbers," he said.

If so, it will be the first export decrease for Hong Kong since the burst of the IT bubble in 2000, when the international trade hub recorded a decrease of 5.8 percent in export.

Lam said confidence had been a key factor in the current crisis, including a lack of confidence in each other between buyers and sellers, between firms and the financial institutions, as well as a lack of confidence of consumers in their employment prospect.

"It takes a short time for confidence to tumble, but long to recover," he said.

Lam said the TDC will have to look to sales statistics in the United States in the two to three weeks before Christmas for clues for Hong Kong exports next year, adding that there has been a modest growth in the first several days of the Thanksgiving holiday.

Some small and medium enterprises operating in Hong Kong the mainland were dropping out under the impact of the tsunami, Lam said, adding that he was nevertheless confident of the prospect after the coming one or two years.

OVER-RELIANCE ON U.S. CONSUMPTION, NEED TO DIVERSIFY

Lam said the ongoing crisis exposed Hong Kong's over-reliance on exports to developed economies such as the United States, the EU and Japan.

The Trade Development Council, a promotion arm of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government, has been encouraging Hong Kong businesses to explore the emerging markets since three years ago, he said.

Russia, the Middle East, South America, India, among others, do have the demand as well as rising consuming capacity to make a sound export market, but Hong Kong businesses have been used to easy money on bills from the developed economies.

"You can do well if you try. We started in the Middle East a couple of years ago and have been doing well ever since. Now we are expanding into Iran," he said.

The TDC has recently earmarked 120 million HK dollars (15.38 million U.S. dollars) to help attract more buyers to Hong Kong and subsidize local firms on trade fair fees.

"We are trying to bring buyers here. It is what we can do best," Lam said.

Lam said the TDC was working on a major expansion project on the Convention and Exhibition Center, which hosts part of Hong Kong's exhibitions organized by the Trade Development Council, which totaled 25,000 exhibitors a year.

MAINLAND MARKET

"What we look to the most for potentials is the mainland market," Lam said in fluent mandarin Chinese, or putonghua.

The mainland currently accounted for only about 8 percent of Hong Kong's consumer product exports, which, from another perspective, means great potential, Lam said.

He said Hong Kong is well-positioned to benefit from a combination of overseas advantages and the market potentials of the Chinese mainland, as the city has comparative advantages such as good designs, management, and manufacturing.

Specifically, Lam said Hong Kong may use the mainland market to grow indigenous international brands, which the city lacks in spite of its international trade hub status.

The TDC planned to open a store of its Hong Kong Design Gallery in Beijing in 2009, Lam said, referring to a gallery showcasing local designs and brands located at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center in the city's downtown area.

The TDC was also planning fashion shopping fairs in the mainland second-tier cities of Chongqing and Wuhan, in southwestern and central China, respectively.

Services trade with the mainland is also of great potential, with the CEPA, or the Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement, which reduces trade barriers.

Lam said he was thinking of trade fairs to bring together buyers from the mainland and sellers of products like wine and tea from the rest of the world.

Lam recounted the inspiring experience of visiting young men in Henan province in central China, who established the food brand Sinian within a couple of years.

"I was thinking, if it was us, we would have managed it even better," he said, "that is where our comparative advantage lies."

Study: Nearly 5% of Americans suffers from persistent depression

U.S. researchers have found that approximately 4.7 percent of the nation's population suffers from persistent depression or anxiety disorders, with a minority of those afflicted receiving adequate medication or counseling, according to a study available on Thursday. (File Photo)

WASHINGTON, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- U.S. researchers have found that approximately 4.7 percent of the nation's population suffers from persistent depression or anxiety disorders, with a minority of those afflicted receiving adequate medication or counseling, according to a study available here on Thursday.

"From a policy perspective, this study indicates that we have to do much better in terms of helping people in the population and clinicians in primary care," said lead author Alexander Young from University of California, Los Angeles.

"We need to understand that psychiatric disorders are treatable with psychotherapy and/or medication. Patients would benefit if we improved linkages between primary care and specialty mental healthcare so that patients are referred and accept referrals to mental health specialists, especially when they are chronically ill," he said.

The study was published Thursday in the December issue of journal Psychiatric Services. It was based on data from Healthcare for Communities, a nationally representative household survey of adults in the United States. The researchers analyzed responses from 1,642 adults with major depression or anxiety disorders.

At follow-up, the researchers found that 59 percent of the individuals no longer met the criteria for having a psychiatric disorder. But to their surprise, they found that among those who remained ill, there were only modest increases in medication use and no statistically significant increase in the use of counseling for their disorders -- measures that are known to significantly improve outcomes, especially when used in combination.

"Persistent depressive and anxiety disorders are remarkably common in the U.S. population and are associated with substantial morbidity," the researchers concluded. "Increasing the rate of appropriate care from its current low level could result in substantial improvement in individuals' lives."

Rowling offers Potter fans a gift with new book

BEIJING, Dec. 5 -- J.K. Rowling has given Harry Potter fans a little gift.

No, not a new book about the young wizard - THAT would be like a birthday combined with Christmas! Instead, she's written a charming confection of a book from the world of Harry Potter with the sparkle and wit that remind us why she became a publishing sensation in the first place.

Scottish author J.K. Rowling poses for photographers as she arrives at a tea party to launch her new book "The Tales of Beedle the Bard" at Parliament Square in Edinburgh Dec. 4, 2008. (Xinhua/Reuters Photo)

The title of the book, "The Tales of Beedle the Bard," should be instantly familiar to all Potter fans. That was the book Harry's friend Hermione Granger was bequeathed following the death of Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster at their school. One tale in the collection of childrens' stories played a part in Harry figuring out how to destroy his enemy, the evil Lord Voldemort.

Following the publication of the last of the Potter books last year, Rowling created seven copies of the Beedle book, writing and illustrating the five stories. She gave six of the copies to friends and the last one to the Children's High Level Group, a charity she helped create. The charity auctioned the book, which Amazon bought for 4 million U.S. dollars, and has released an edition for the general public to raise more money.

In this edition, Rowling tells us, the tales were translated from the Ancient Runes by none other than Hermione. And adding a special flair, the stories are accompanied by notes from Dumbledore, expounding on their larger meaning. In her introduction, Rowling says the notes date to about 18 months before Dumbledore's death.

One of seven original copies of author J.K. Rowling's book, "The Tales of Beedle the Bard," is on display at the New York Public Library, Dec. 3, 2008. The 157 page book, which contains several short stories from the Harry Potter series, is handwritten and illustrated by Rowling, and is on loan to the library through Jan. 4, 2009. (Xinhua/Reuters Photo)

If anything, the new book shows us Rowling hasn't lost her touch since finishing her series. It's all here - cleverly written stories, little details that add to the enjoyment of readers who spot them, deeper points about the choices people make and their consequences. The yarns are ostensibly meant to be read by wizard children, so they're short, but they don't lack for action, or in some cases, rather gruesome imagery and some violence. Apparently wizard children are a hardy bunch.

This isn't a full-length book, though, so it doesn't have the depth and emotional heft that were the hallmark of the series. But it really is a gift to fans. It rewards them for their dedication to the world of Harry Potter by giving them more glimpses into that place. Dumbledore's commentary is a particular pleasure, especially when he recounts details that make certain aspects of the series a little clearer.

Fans saddened that the series had to end will now have a reason to smile a little.

GM, Chrysler "considering bankruptcy"

BEIJING, Dec. 5 -- General Motors Corp and Chrysler LLC executives are considering accepting a pre-arranged bankruptcy as the last-resort price of getting a multibillion-dollar government bailout, said a person familiar with their internal discussions.

Auto executives have warned bankruptcy would lead to liquidation as customers abandoned the companies. Staff for three members of Congress have asked restructuring experts if a pre-arranged bankruptcy - negotiated with workers, creditors and lenders - could be used to reorganize the industry without liquidation, a person familiar with that matter said.

Leaders of the U.S. automotive industry testify at a hearing held by the House Financial Services Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington November 19, 2008. From left are General Motors CEO Richard Wagoner, Chrysler Chairman and CEO Robert Nardelli and Ford president and CEO Alan Mulally.(Xinhua/Reuters Photo)

"It's essential for Congress to do due diligence on bankruptcy as an option so it gets a clear sense from independent people what the risks and possibilities are," said Alan Gover of White & Case, who has been lead lawyer in 60 billion U.S. dollars of corporate-debt restructurings.

Many solutions to the automakers' financial problems are on the table in discussions in Washington and around the country among company officials, lenders, union officials and other interested parties, the person briefed on internal talks said.

Negotiations are splintered among small groups, making it unlikely a proposed solution such as bankruptcy would emerge until next week at the earliest, the person said.

Publicly GM Chief Executive Officer Rick Wagoner has said bankruptcy would mean liquidation because customers would refuse to buy cars from a company that might not be able to back warranties or supply parts. Bankruptcy is "way down the list of options", GM board member George Fisher said. GM spokesman Tony Cervone had no additional comment.

Chrysler spokeswoman Shawn Morgan didn't have an immediate comment.

GM and Chrysler told Congress on Dec 2 that they need 11 billion dollars in government loans just to survive the year as the auto industry slump deepens. To get the money, the companies agreed to slash payrolls, shed brands and shrink dealerships. Bankruptcy was not part of their plans.

GM, Chrysler and Ford Motor Co asked for a 34-billion-dollar bailout package, about a third larger than the $25 billion Energy Department loan program the White House has previously supported to finance more fuel-efficient cars. Democrats in Congress, led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, pledged to keep carmakers out of bankruptcy.

The Democrats' goal of preserving a U.S. auto industry is not doable without a bankruptcy, said Lynn LoPucki, who teaches bankruptcy law at Harvard University and the University of California at Los Angeles.

"A workout requires everybody's agreement," he said. "If I own bonds, GM can't force me to take less than 100 cents on the dollar outside of bankruptcy court. Bankruptcy is the only thing that can work because GM and the government need the ability to force people to go along with the plan. Paying everyone in full is prohibitively expensive."

About 77 percent of billion-dollar companies survive bankruptcy, according to LoPucki's database, while the others sell their business.

"Million-dollar companies rarely go into bankruptcy and liquidate piecemeal," he said.

The government could guarantee the warranties given to consumers on cars bought from a bankrupt automaker, said Mark Bane, a bankruptcy lawyer with Ropes & Gray in New York. Government money could also "ensure that parts suppliers will be paid", he said.

Less government money would be needed in a prepackaged bankruptcy, which might last only two months, compared with two years or more for a regular bankruptcy, according to Bane. In a prepack restructuring, an automaker would go into court after reaching agreement with lenders, workers and suppliers on what each would give up and on the business plan to be followed.

Government aid might be needed only for the period when the company was gaining consent from its constituencies - which might take as long as six to 12 months, Bane said.

President-elect Barack Obama said lawmakers were right to demand that US automakers provide a plan to sustain their businesses before getting federal aid and that their latest efforts represent "a more serious set" of proposals than earlier ones.

Any assistance must be "based on realistic assessments of what the auto market is going to be and a realistic plan for how we're going to make these companies viable over the long term", Obama said.

A representative of Obama's team earlier contacted at least one bankruptcy-law firm to say Daniel Tarullo, a professor at Georgetown University's law school who heads Obama's economic policy working group, would call to discuss the workings of a so-called prepack, according to this person.

The Big Boss: Yao kills off Clippers

HOUSTON: Yao Ming scored 24 points, had 10 rebounds and went 12-for-13 from the free throw line to lead the Houston Rockets over the Los Angeles Clippers 103-96 on Wednesday.

Rafer Alston sank five 3-pointers and added 21 points and Ron Artest scored 19 points for the Rockets, who played their fourth straight game without Tracy McGrady. The seven-time all-star is out three weeks with a sore left knee.

"In this three weeks, we need a little bit more from everybody," Yao said. "He (McGrady) is a big part of our team. I think that everybody understands that, and everybody is clear that when we step on the court, we need to really be ready to play."

Al Thornton scored 24 and Zach Randolph had 23 points and 11 rebounds for the Clippers, who've dropped six of seven road games this season.

Yao, guarded by the shorter Randolph most of the game, flipped in a turnaround 20 seconds later and Houston put away the game from the line. The Rockets came in shooting 76.7 percent from the line and the 31 winners in 39 attempts were both season highs.

"That's remarkable whenever a team gets to the line that many times," said Alston, who went 4-for-6 on free throws.

Yao hit his first two shots, but the rest of the Rockets missed 12 of their first 15. Yao also started 8-for-8 from the line to help Houston build an early lead.

Randolph struggled to guard Yao and when the Rockets' center wasn't taking point-blank shots, he was getting swarmed by the Clippers and going to the free-throw line.

"At the beginning of the game, I tried to get a quick score and make them come to double-team me," Yao said. "I know they have a couple of big guys, so we can make some pressure inside."

The Rockets led 87-83 when Yao returned after a rest with 6:07 remaining, and Houston never lost the lead.

Celtics 116, Pacers 96

At Boston, Rajon Rondo notched his first career triple-double and Ray Allen scored 31 points, leading the Boston Celtics over the Indiana Pacers, 114-96 on Wednesday for their 10th straight victory.

Rondo scored 16 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and handed out a career-high 17 assists. Kevin Garnett added 26 points and 14 rebounds for the Celtics, who matched their longest winning streak since their 2007-08 championship season, a 10-game run from Feb 24-March 12.

Danny Granger led the Pacers with 20 points, while Troy Murphy chipped in with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Cavaliers 118, Knicks 82

At Cleveland, LeBron James scored 21 points and then grabbed an early seat on the bench as Cleveland beat New York to improve to 10-0 on its own floor for the first time in franchise history with its 14th win in 15 games.

Mo Williams added 16 points, Zydrunas Ilgauskas had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and none of Cleveland's starters played more than 28 minutes. The 36-point margin of victory was the Cavs' largest in 171 games against New York.

Al Harrington scored 20 points, Anthony Roberson had 19 and David Lee 16 with 16 rebounds for the Knicks, who shot 39 percent and made 28 turnovers.

Lakers 114, 76ers 102

At Philadelphia, Kobe Bryant tormented his hometown team again, scoring 32 points to help Los Angeles rebound from a last-second loss with a victory over Philadelphia.

The Lakers never let the middling Sixers get too close in this one and improved to 15-2 one night after they lost in Indiana on a late tip.

Andre Miller scored 26 points and Andre Iguodala had 19 for the Sixers.

Hornets 104, Suns 91

At New Orleans, Chris Paul had 24 points and 15 assists to lead New Orleans over short-handed Phoenix.

Peja Stojakovic also scored 24 points, highlighted by his five 3-pointers, and David West added 23 points and 14 rebounds for New Orleans, which has won five of its last six games.

Amare Stoudemire led Phoenix with 26 points, while Leandro Barbosa added 19 and Grant Hill 17. However, the Suns were unable to keep pace with guard Steve Nash sidelined because of an illness. Shaquille O'Neal also sat out for Phoenix, hoping to be fresh when the Suns play Thursday night at Dallas.

Hawks 105, Grizzlies 95

At Atlanta, Joe Johnson scored 26 points, and Mike Bibby had 20 points and 10 assists in Atlanta's victory over Memphis.

The Hawks, who have won three of four and five of seven, welcomed back Josh Smith after their $58 million forward missed the past 12 games with an ankle sprain. In 28 minutes, Smith had 14 points, six rebounds, five assists, four turnovers and one blocked shot.

Rudy Gay finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds as Memphis dropped its season-worst seventh straight.

Knicks as NBA's most moneyed team for fourth year

NEW YORK: The New York Knicks are the most valuable professional basketball team in the NBA for the fourth consecutive year, Forbes magazine reported on Wednesday.

The Knicks' estimated value is $613 million, up $5 million from last year's list, according to the magazine.

The team, owned by Cablevision Systems Corp, had estimated operating income of $29.6 million for the 2007-2008 season, a large improvement from a loss of $42.2 million the previous year, Forbes said.

The team posted the most revenues in the NBA at $208 million, up from $196 million the year before.

The NBA, like most US sports leagues, has been hit by the economic slump. At the start of the current season, league executives acknowledged weakness in season-ticket sales, and commissioner David Stern said in October the NBA would lay off 80 people, or 9 percent of its work force.

For the fourth straight year, the Los Angeles Lakers ranked second with an estimated value of $584 million, up from $560 million last year, Forbes said.

In the NBA finals last season, the Lakers lost to the Boston Celtics, which broke into the top 10 at No 9, with a value of $447 million - the largest increase in the top 10 from last year at 14 percent. Every team in the top 10 showed an increase in estimated value.

Ranking from three to eight were the Chicago Bulls (with an estimated value of $504 million), the Detroit Pistons ($480 million), the Cleveland Cavaliers ($477 million), the Houston Rockets ($469 million), the Dallas Mavericks ($466 million) and the Phoenix Suns ($452 million), according to Forbes.

The San Antonio Spurs ranked No 10 with a value of $415 million.

The Miami Heat, meanwhile, dropped out of the top 10 to No 12, with a value of $393 million, down from $418 million last year, the magazine said.

The Bulls had the highest estimated operating income at $55.5 million, while the Denver Nuggets suffered the largest estimated loss at $26.3 million, Forbes said.

Among the 10 most valuable teams, the Mavericks, owned by wealthy investor Mark Cuban, had an estimated operating loss of $13.6 million, according to Forbes. In May, Cuban, who was recently charged by federal regulators with insider trading, said his team had lost money in six of the last eight years.

Revenue and operating income for the teams is estimated for the 2007-2008 season, Forbes said. Values are estimated based on teams' arena deals without deducting debt, other than arena debt.

Sampras back to relish life

LONDON - "Did you guys miss me?" asked Pete Sampras when he faced the media at the Royal Albert Hall on his first visit to London in six years this week.

The 14-times grand slam champion is appearing in the final seniors tour event of the year, having recently rekindled his passion for the sport he dominated in the 1990s.

The American's vice-like grip on tennis was at its most destructive in London and especially Wimbledon, where he chalked up seven major titles between 1993-2000.

Sampras, 37, last played in the capital at Wimbledon in 2002, where he was infamously scheduled to play Swiss journeyman George Bastl in the second round on the 'graveyard of champions' Court Two.

It was his final match on the prestigious turf of SW19 and the start of the harsh realisation that his career was over.

"Last time I was here was a major low point," said Sampras, who briefly contemplated a return to Wimbledon in 2003 to try to wipe out the memory of the five-set defeat to Bastl.

"Once Wimbledon came and went the year after I won the (2002) U.S. Open I knew it was time for me to move on."

As is common with many retiring athletes, Sampras found that moving on was not so easy.

PLAYING POKER

"(For) three years I didn't do a thing," he said. "I put on some weight. I wasn't feeling too good about myself. Playing golf, playing poker.

"You wake up (and say) 'Okay, what am I going to do today?' To be 31, 32 and retired is great but at the same time I've always been a worker, since I was a teenager.

"So to say 'Cold turkey I'm done', at first it was great but after a few years it felt like I needed something more to do."

The past 18 months have been a rebirth for Sampras, featuring his best-of-three exhibition series against 13-time grand slam champion Roger Federer late in 2007, which the Swiss won 2-1.

More recently, Sampras has joined the seniors tour, something that during his playing days he always maintained he would never do.

In the end, his love of the game proved too strong.

"The last couple of years I've missed it more than when I first retired," he said.

"But it's a brutal sport this one and it took a lot out of me. I needed a few years to decompress and take a deep breath to get to a point where I'd like to play again."

Sampras now seems to be relishing life and that has shown in his tennis. In June he won the first seniors tour event he entered in Brazil, against former world number one Marcelo Rios of Chile.

He is hoping to notch up another victory in London and is not deterred that Alan Mills, the man behind the 2002 Wimbledon scheduling, is the tournament referee.

"I'm over it. But I'll remind him," he joked.

Sampras also said a visit to Wimbledon could be on the cards.

"I'd love to play on that court one more time. There's not a place like it in the world. I'll maybe ask the club if they would let me play a practice set," he said.

TRICKY TIME

While all is good in the life of Sampras, the same cannot be said for American tennis.

The United States has not had a male grand slam winner since Andy Roddick at the 2003 U.S. Open.

"It's a tricky time," said Sampras. "Knowing the American fans and the media we expect some Wimbledon champions and our guys to be number one and when you don't have that people start complaining.

"It's a tough comparison for Andy (Roddick) and James (Blake) to be compared to myself and Andre (Agassi), Jim (Courier) and Michael (Chang). That's a pretty unique crew but we need some sort of American presence at the top of the game."

The "unique crew" won 27 of 56 majors between the 1989 French Open and the 2003 Australian Open.

It has been 40 years since the U.S. last had to wait more than five years for a male grand slam champion and Sampras believes it could be a while before his compatriots dominate tennis again.

"It's going to take some years, maybe five, 10 or 15 years for another crew of really good young Americans. It might not ever happen for 40 years. It's hard to say. But there's no doubt we need it," he said.

Despite their father's pedigree, Sampras's two sons, aged two and five, seem unlikely to help the situation in the future.

"My son holds it like this, and I say 'hold it like that', and he just does it his way," he said.

"These kids don't listen to me on the tennis court," he added, a wry smile breaking out on his face.

Internacional win Cup with late equalizer

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazil's Internacional were still in an ecstatic mood after winning the Copa Sudamericana on Wednesday.

Despite being outplayed at home for much of the second leg, Internacional snatched an injury-time equalizer to draw 1-1 against Argentine's Estudiantes and won 2-1 on aggregate.

Internacional became the first Brazilian team to win the trophy, the region's equivalent of the UEFA Cup, in its six-year history.

"I'm very happy. I have never won an international title and I just did it with my club," Internacional's Argentine player Andres D'Alessandro told reporters on Thursday.

"This is a big award for me, for all that I did with my club and my family," he said.

Another Argentine player Pablo Guinazu added that the title is "nice and well-deserved".

Toro Rosso keep Sato's F1 comeback hopes alive

LONDON - Japan's Takuma Sato will test again for the race-winning Toro Rosso team in Spain next week, keeping alive his hopes of a Formula One comeback next season.

Sato's management said in a statement on Thursday that the 31-year-old former Jordan, BAR and Super Aguri driver would join the Ferrari-powered team at the Jerez circuit for their December 10-11 test.

"We obviously see this as a positive step but still nothing is decided for the 2009 racing season," said Sato's commercial manager Matthew Winter.

Sato is Japan's most successful Formula One driver, having scored 44 points from his 90 races including a third place in the 2004 US Grand Prix.

However he has not competed since this year's Spanish Grand Prix in April, when Honda-backed Super Aguri went out of business.

Toro Rosso, the former Minardi team, won this year's Italian Grand Prix with 21-year-old German Sebastian Vettel.

Vettel has since moved on to the main Red Bull team and is likely to be replaced by 20-year-old Swiss Sebastien Buemi.

France's Sebastien Bourdais, Toro Rosso's other driver this year, has yet to be confirmed and Sato -- who has twice tested for the team in the last two months -- would represent an experienced alternative.

The popular Sato has also been presented as a useful instrument to help Red Bull increase sales of their energy drink in Japan. Red Bull recently regained full ownership of Toro Rosso.

LONDON, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- Carlos Tevez scored four goals to send Manchester United into the English League Cup last four in a thrilling 5-3 win over Blackburn at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Holders Tottenham Hotspur also advanced after a 2-1 victory at Watford thanks to Darren Bent's late winner.

The other two slots had gone to championship sides Burnley, who cracked Arsenal out with a 2-0 home win on Tuesday, and Derby County, beating Stoke City 1-0.

Tevez's magnificent display is sure to cause selection problems for boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who has left him on the bench for much of the season in the league.

The unstoppable Argentine broke the deadlock after 36 minutes before setting up Nani to fire home. Benni McCarthy's shot pulled one back for the visitors shortly after the break but Tevez immediately responded with two quick-fire goals in three minutes including a penalty to make it 4-1.

Blackburn reignited hopes as they scored in the final six minutes to cut the difference to one goal. However, Tevez grabbed his fourth goal in injury time and deservedly secured United's place in Saturday's semi-finals.

Ferguson made 10 changes to the United lineup who won at Manchester City on Sunday but they were still too much for the visitors.

Blackburn's poor performance will not ease the pressure on under-fire manager Paul Ince, who has seen his side slip into the Premier League drop zone in recent weeks.
